This is the offering to Kadam Week 2015 prompt 2: Birthday Surprise
When Kurt's birthday came around, Adam discovered it only because he was there, when Kurt's family called to wish him a happy birthday.
"Darling why did you say something, we should have celebrated it, in fact I'm serious, we should go and do something right now. Anything you want, this is your day you call the shots, hot shot."
Kurt chuckled and snuggled closer to Adam "And what if what I want is you staying exactly here on the couch with me, us ordering in and the tv running as we eat, and then as we pretend to watch it we make out until it's time for bed and we move the celebration to the bed hmm?"
Adam chuckled as well and answered "well then it's easy you'll just have the pick on which take away we'll have and full control of the telly. Before allowing me into your bed and let me show you properly how much I appreciate the fact that you were born, and here with me..."
Kurt was grateful that Adam wasn't making a big fuss about this but still tried to make this day special...
Kurt had been too used through the year to not do anything too special, a little bit was the byproduct of being the only child of a single parent. The rest of it was due to not having that many friends, especially not ones with parents who'd actually allow their children to be around the weird (wrong) kid outside school time…
So for years, all Kurt got was just a special day with his dad, special breakfast, one that on these days with stage combat and dancing lessons would have been too much of an indulgence.
The ritual of watching the sound of music, or attending a sing along event, something that Kurt had already done during the morning, while he was working out and doing all the chores that needed to be done through the loft...
Adam and he had been together for barely four months, Kurt had feared it would be a little too much and too early to share the details and reasons behind his weird birthday traditions, so he had completed them alone. And just planned to spend their evening together enjoying his boyfriend's company and taking anything Adam was willing to give him.
Seeing Adam's kind acceptance and his willingness to adapt, made Kurt feeling more comfortable, almost ready to share some of it in time.
Despite Kurt's dwelling fears, their relationship stayed strong. Strong enough that they had at least the skype version of meeting the parents...
This was exactly how Kurt discovered with only a couple of days to spare that August 4th was Adam's birthday.
And while he had seen some of his friends' birthday celebrations, he noticed many different ways to go through it, each suiting their own personalities.
To his dismay, none in the Apples, nor any of their friends had reached out to him about what to do for Adam's birthday, despite being together for eight months now.
So Kurt started to put on feelers and was both surprised and unsurprised at the same time, in discovering that none of his other friends seemed to know about his coming birthday. While Adam on the other hand had made a point of learning everyone's birthday and had made sure everyone would get a special something on their birthday, even if it wasn't anything more than getting their favourite cookies.
While for Kurt choosing to keep it low key, was born more from the lack of actual people who cared enough for him. For Adam most likely it was due to the time of the year. Kurt wasn't too sure about when schools had the summer break in the UK, but at least for Adam's time at Nyada, everyone was either happily on vacation, or like the both of them super busy with summer courses...
Going through all their contacts, Kurt managed to gauge that, at least half of their friends were still in New York.
So Kurt organised a small party, charging everyone to bring in a dish of Adam's favourites.
Or at least candies, snacks or drinks, making sure that the amount of alcoholic drink wouldn't exceed the food...
Kurt kept it as his privilege to take care of the cake... Well, technically cupcakes, of the three kinds his boyfriend liked the most...
After classes were over, he went to collect Adam for their date and instead of going home, as Adam expected, Kurt took them to the community centre where one of the Apples was volunteering at.
Recognising the place Adam asked surprised "Darling, why are we here? I didn't know the kids were putting on any production at this time of the year"
Kurt smiled softly before answering "Someone didn't share that today is his birthday, but a little birdie told me. So I've organised a party inviting all our friends, who were still or already got back here in New York. They are all waiting in there to celebrate your birthday together... You are not obliged to get in if you'd rather not, I can call it off, and we can have a quiet celebration at home… We can do anything you choose."
Adam looked conflicted, both options were really tempting, so instead of choosing one he asked cheekily "Is doing both within tonight's plethora of options?"
Kurt grinned brilliantly "Absolutely, it is your day wearing a crown today, you can call all the shots, hot shot" the last part was said with a grin and a clearly marked foreign accent.
Adam chuckled at the gentle tease and leaned forward to kiss Kurt.
The party was a wonderful surprise, and it turned out really great, everyone had fun. And Adam was very moved that so many of his friends, had actually paid enough attention to him and what he liked best, that they could pull off such a feat…
As Kurt had already known it would happen, the cupcakes disappeared quickly. And Adam, who by now had more than a couple of those really strong drinks, started mourning a little their rather ephemeral nature, waxing poetics on the mourning of such a sweet and delicious treat...
Until one of the Apples, who had more than likely too many beaker's shots, asked if Adam was talking about Kurt's cupcakes or Kurt himself...
Starting the wave of laughter around the room.
Kurt, still laughing, embraced Adam and whispered softly in his ear "There is more frosting waiting for you at home"
Adam then turned his head and kissed Kurt soundly. As he teasingly pushed back his ass on Kurt's groin he asked "What kind of frosting are you offering me Mr Hummel?"
Adam hummed Kurt's family name in a way that sounded almost obscene. It made Kurt's eyes grow larger, and his pupils blown open as he replied breathlessly "Why Mr Crawford, any kind you want. Today your wish is my command…"
After that, the two of them relocated for a more private celebration.
It wasn't until later on, when they were cuddling under the blankets that Adam whispered almost shyly "Thank you for getting through the trouble to organise today's surprise for me, it was one of the birthdays I ever had, especially since I came here"
Kurt placed a hand on Adam's cheek and kissed him lovingly "You deserve to feel just as important and loved as you make us feel… I wanted today to be as special as you are, to make you see you have friends who love you."
