Scorching sunlight beat down on the white scales of a SandWing as she flew above the Kingdom of Sand. Her black eyes full of fear, she glanced down at the white egg she carried in her front talons. It had been a few minutes since she'd lost the IceWing soldiers, but she didn't want to jinx herself. The pale dragon glided down toward the Scorpion Den, then pulled up, flying toward the rainforest.

"Come on egg,", the SandWing begged. "Hang in there a little while longer."

. . .

"I have it!" The SandWing landed on the soft sand and carried the egg inside a cave. Another SandWing turned his black eyes on her, then on the egg.

"Meerkat," the male said, "put it in the shade, quickly." Meerkat gently put the icy, fragile egg in the sand and lay down by it, curling her barbed tail around it as a mother would.

"Are you sure you got the right one?"

"Of course, Bat," she said. "Don't worry. The war will be over, soon." The sound of cracking split the air and the two SandWings turned their attention to the white egg. The crack in the shell became bigger and better until a small white dragon slithered out.

"Look!" Meerkat said. "He's hatched. So, that's a baby IceWing. He looks more white than I expected."

Bat turned his snout up. "He looks cold-hearted. Exactly as I expected."

The IceWing flopped into the cool sand, flailing his wings.

Meerkat laughed. "We need an IceWing name for him. Something icy..."

"How about..." the male sand dragon paused, tapping his talon against his chin, thinking. "How about Elk?"
