Power Triggers

"Devil May Cry. Uh? Nero? That you?

...ah! Hey, Adam! Whatsup? I swear you sound just like my neph...

Mariner Bay again, hu?

...yeah, I remember...

How could I ever forget?

1988...

...wasn't even an adult yet...

...hey! Quit it, you know what i mean.

Got an anonymous tip from my "sponsor" about a powerful demon in the area.

Said to save who I could and report back.

Signed: Z and A5

You'd think by now I'd know better than to trust people with single letters for names.

I couldn't sense anything, only being a kid still practically at the time. Then again... (sigh)... maybe I could have tried harder. Back then, I was just in it for the "jackpot."I didn't give a damn about innocents.

Oh, how different things could have been.

If only a few seconds difference, how much heartache could I have spared?

The same heartbreak they felt before...

The same heartbreak I had felt before.

Then I heard a crash in the distance.

I just shrugged it off, being a hothead still. (Sigh.) Then I heard him yell... "SAVE HIM!"

Finally, I noticed the damn fire in the distance... on a cold night in the desert!

...maybe I was still scared at the time...

...avoiding it...

...if i hadn't, maybe he'd still been there...

I took off like a bat outta hell, but I felt it was too late at one point, already sensing the devil and dark powers having been put into play.

"NOOOOOOOO!"

...i couldn't save him...

...it still haunts my nightmares to this day.

I'm just glad I kept going.

...that I still keep going. Cuz ya never know when its' too late for something good.

There's always something that can make all the difference in the world. If not for you, than for someone else... before they feel like its' too late. That's just it:

It's never too late

Adrenine and a speeding ticket later...

Next thing I knew, a man and his kid... a daughter it looked like from the pink... were just hanging out... holding onto a branch for dear life over a flaming car at the end of a cliff! His child was in one arm and the branch in the other.

I went out on a limb that they needed my help.

Every now and them time seems to slow down when something big happens. You just gotta be in the moment and ready, or you'll be just as slow as everything else around you. Unable to act. Unable to think.

I hate that feeling. Never again...

The look on their faces went from horror to priceless when they saw a red motorbike in the shape of a shark slam into some rocks and sent yours truly, friendly neighborhood wacky woohoo pizza man, flying across the canyon and launching right into them as they fell. Crashed and landed... just not at once. Stuck it too!

"You two alright?"

The man's eyes... they were still in shock.

But not from the fall... no, I saw that look once before.

...in a mirror...

...loss.

"My son..."

I did a double check on the child in his arms. Sure enough, it was a girl.

...that's when it finally sunk in. I set them down, biting my lip, trying to hold it in.

Finally, i slammed my fist down hard on the sand below.

"Dammit!"

The dirt went flying every which way, even putting out some of the fire.

"Daddy..." the voice broke my heart.

At least where my heart was suppose to be at the time. "Where's Ryan?"

I saw the agony in his expression, yet I got the sinking felling they'd been through this before.

"Ryan's gone sweetie... I couldn't save him.. I couldn't save mommy..."

"I know that dad, but..." we both did a double-take at her reaction "where is his body?"

I glanced around a bit dumbfounded, before I finally sensed it again.

I felt it.

Hard.

It was coming... right for us.

"AAAAAAAAAAAA!" That shriek of horror paralyzed her in fear. Instinct took hold and a caught her before the force sent her backwards.

"DANA!" She passed out in my arms.

"It's ok." I gave her over as gently as I could, before grabbing my hilt.

"WHO DARES INTERFERE?"

I took the liberty of raising my hand, followed by it's middle finger and then the rest of 'em! Just so there was no confusion.

The sand swirled around into a blobish ball form until finally it struck the flames, reigniting them once more, but now in hellfire.

"YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN INVOLVED," Ugly reared its' faces at me from the dirtbag of hot air "SON OF SPARDA."

From out of seemingly nowhere, these freakin' trading cards start flying in each direction on the ground. Remember "flying like a bat outta hell" earlier?

"BATLINGS, ATTACK!"

These goofy-looking guys in black spandex with little red wings on their head pop out and start charging in.

"Well then," I said, spinning up one of my new blasters in one hand while i reached my arm over my shoulder with the other to grab my "rent-a-sword." Looks like plastic, but it started to glow red and I could hear what sounded like a damn T-Rex coming.

"It's Power Time!"

...the little minions all stopped and I got a funny look from the dad and daughter. As I thought about it more, the phrase didn't really seem to roll off the tongue.

"I guess I'll have to work on the catchphrase later." Before they could act, I headshot one and grabbed the extra blaster, opening fire on the swarm!
