Deku: Son of Zeus
Chapter One: I Accidentally Send My Childhood Friend Flying Through A Wall And Into A Storm
It was a cloudy day outside, but the class had still went outside for recess. It didn't seem like it was going to rain, so I wasn't going to complain. But storms didn't really bother him at all. In fact, they really calmed me down when I'm stressed or angry. After a particularly rough day, I remember the rain soothing me.
I heard a teacher's aide say that we could go and play by our teacher, a man from America, Mr. Brunner. Mr. Brunner was easily out coolest teacher, because of both his relaxed teaching methods and the subject that he taught.
He taught Greek Mythology, which contains some of the most interesting stories I've ever heard. Such as the tale of Hercules, or Heracles, depending on who you asked.
He was disabled, requiring a wheelchair. Apparently his legs had been rolled over by a car in some sort of freak accident, but that didn't stop him from having these tournaments with fake weapons. Those were some of the most fun he had, even if Kacchan won them all.
Oh yeah, Kacchan. Well, that wasn't his real name, his birth name is Katsuki Bakugou, but I've called him Kacchan since I was little, and it just kinda stuck for me. He was the strongest in the class by far, and his power was one of the best I'd ever seen. He can create explosions from his sweat, which is like nitroglycerin. They are pretty powerful, and he plans on using it to be a hero.
I'd try and be one too, but I've kind of given up on that. Since I was diagnosed Quirkless, my life has been pretty bad. But Mr. Brunner was about the only one who didn't care. He was cool like that.
Kacchan shouted, "Oi! Deku!" It immediately grabbed my attention, after years of being friends with him, you can tell when someone wants your attention. In this case, it was a lot more obvious than a typical case.
Oh, I should probably explain his nickname for me. This one time, we were hanging out a playground. Nearby, there was a small stand where they were selling sodas. I asked my mom to buy me one, and, being the gift from heaven she is, bought one for all of us.
They had written our names down the side of the cups so we could tell who's was who's. At the time, Kacchan was the only one of us who could read, and he said that my name could be read as "Defenseless Izuku," or Deku for short. It was, at the time, just a name he said when he teasing, but when I was diagnosed Quirkless, it became much more. Now almost everyone in class calls me Deku.
Kacchan walked up to me and said, "Brunner's having another one of his tournaments today, and I looked at the bracket, we're the first match! Get ready to be pummeled, nerd!" He turned around and slowly began walking back to the people who called him a friend. But that was mostly because they feared him or just wanted the strongest person in class on their side.
Next period would be Mr. Brunner's class, so I had that to look forward to. But for some reason, I felt confident, as if I could take down just about anyone.
That empowering feeling gave me the courage to stand up for myself. "No, I don't think I will," I said defiantly. He whipped right back around and growled like an animal.
"What the hell did you jus-?"
"I said I don't think I will be pummeled by you, Kacchan." I guess I had a death wish. Despite not wanting them to, words still came out from my mouth. "I'm gonna do my best to make sure I come out on top. After all, Quirks aren't allowed in the fight."
For a second I thought that Kacchan was going to attack me right there, but he seemed to notice Mr. Brunner watching from his wheelchair nearby. He grumbled something about kicking my ass and then walked off, his goons following after each of them gave me a not-so-threatening scowl.
I could hear Mr. Brunner rolling towards me and I expected him to scold me for trying to pick a fight, which was rather unlike me. But instead he said, "Don't worry about that Bakugou boy. His head is rather bloated, so to speak. I'll be rooting for you." He smiled towards me, and I did the same. He wheeled off and continued to watch over the rest of the class.
The support of my favorite teacher made me feel even better than I already did. I almost felt like I could take down just about anyone, even All Might. But that'd be crazy, if I was that strong, I'd have to be a god or something.
If you don't know who All Might is, you haven't just been living under a rock, you are the rock. He's not only the best and strongest hero in Japan, he's the greatest in the entire world. He's the reason that the crime rate is so low. Villains fear just the sound of his voice and his massive shadow. They fear the fact that he could be there any second makes them think twice about commiting any crime.
So yeah, he's definitely the best hero in the world. I hope to be like him one day, but I'll never be able to. I kinda gave up on hope of that being a possibility when I was four.
The bell for recess to end rang throughout the playground. Man, I'd been thinking for a while. A lot longer than I thought I had been.
I reluctantly began walking inside to Mr. Brunner's room, now realizing how screwed I was. I had made Kacchan angry, and that was definitely a mistake. Maybe he was just lying about the two of them being in a match, but that didn't seem very likely.
As I walked up the stairs to inside my classroom, I could almost feel the fiery glare of Kacchan. It made chills go down my spine and I began to wonder if I was even going to make it out alive. Hopefully Mr. Brunner would be able to stop the fight if it ever got so bad.
Then an idea formed inside my brain. What if I feigned an illness of some sort. Then I could go home and not have to fight the raging volcano in human form! But Mr. Brunner, who's wise ears could probably hear a lie from a mile away, would be soon to pick up on the slightest quiver in my voice.
So that idea was already not a possibility. Guess I'm screwed.
I could hear myself muttering out of habit, "I'm gonna die," over and over again, and I was starting to get weird looks from my fellow students. But I couldn't really stop it, it's something I've been doing since I was little.
It has caused me quite a few problems in school, mostly just kids trying to cheat off of my answers that they could make out. It eventually got so bad that I tried to stop it, and it's been working for the most part, now it only comes out when I'm scared or nervous.
The bell for class rang and I looked up and finally realized that I was now alone in the hallway. That might have been why I hadn't ran into anyone and only seen a few people. Better hurry.
My attempt to enter the classroom without being noticed went horribly wrong as soon as I opened the door. They hadn't started yet, instead they were all just staring at the doorway, waiting for me to walk in. Mr. Brunner said, "Now that Midoriya has decided to join us, let us begin. Take a seat." He gestured to the desk right in front of his room and I felt my face flush red with embarrassment.
I absolutely hated the front seat, but Mr. Brunner felt it was prudent for me to be as close to him as possible. Maybe he wanted me to learn from the lessons of the past.
Rain began to fall onto the roof of the school, the gentle patter soothing me slightly. I had a feeling that there would be a storm soon. I also seemed to be able to tell when that would happen, so I trusted my gut about it most of the time. Mr. Brunner ignored the brewing storm and continued.
He said, "Class, today, as you all know, is the monthly Gladiatorial Tournament." Before the class cheered, he gestured for them to be silent. Experience with them had made it to where he knew what we would do in a given situation.
A clap of thunder rumbled the room before Mr. Brunner could continue what he had been saying and I felt my nerves calm further. Some of my classmates seemed to be intimidated by the storm, which was rather silly. What harm could a storm do to you if you were inside? Sure, being struck by lightning could definitely kill you, but it couldn't get past the roof of a building. At least not any sturdy one.
Mr. Brunner let the rumbling stop and said, "Now, originally Midoriya's match would've been one of the last of the round, but today, since he was late for class, he will be first." Well, this is the moment of truth. Am I going to die today?
"His opponent will be Bakugou Katsuki." Yep. Might as well get my grave ready.
Kacchan stood up and smiled viciously at me. He didn't need to tell me anything because I could read his face. You're going to die, shitty Deku.
The both of us walked to the open section of the room specifically reserved for the tournament matches. It was in the middle of the room in a wide circle so that everyone could see. Mr. Brunner would be refereeing the match, which would be a hand-to-hand combat match with no Quirk usage, which would make the match just a bit more even, but since I was so skinny, I wouldn't be able to have any advantage.
Mr. Brunner pushed his wheelchair over to between the two and said, "I want no major injuries in this battle. This is to be a clean match." He gave no time for them to prepare, instead giving the signal for the battle to begin as soon as he was out of the way.
As Kacchan ran towards me, I began to think about the different ways to avoid his first attack. He always went with that big right punch to start a fight, but there's no way I could stop that. But, it might be my only chance.
Sure enough, he cocked back that right hand as he charged. I prepared myself for that attack, planting me feet so that they would be able to slide when needed. As he thrust his arm forward, I latched onto it with both my hands and pivoted, feeling a strange power coursing through my body. Time seemed to slow for me as I lifted him into the air and slammed him into the ground with a loud thud.
I stared at my hands in shock. Had I really just done that? The class seemed to have similar thoughts, because their jaws were dropped about as far as they could go.
Kacchan quickly leapt to his feet and tried to punch me right in the gut. Not sure of what I was doing, I dodged the attack by rolling under him and kicked his legs out from under him, making him sprawl on the floor for a second time.
I was starting to feel more confident in myself now as he got up again. I looked over to Mr. Brunner and saw that he was smiling slightly under his beard. A little weird, but okay.
Kacchan realized it was a bad idea to attack me again and decided to go on the defensive. I analyzed his movements, waiting for an opportune moment to attack.
I write in these notebooks, and Input down everything I can about heroes in them, and I even included Kacchan in my first edition, and I put down everything about his fighting style, so I knew a lot about him and what made him tick.
I saw him shift his feet and began to get suspicious of his actions. Was he trying to get a sucker punch in on me? Not gonna happen.
He grew tired of waiting and burst forward, a fist thrown forward to my skull. I swung my head under his attack and decided to end it all with one last move.
I punched him right in his ribcage and watched in utter shock and horror as he was sent flying through the wall and out into the rain outside.
Mr. Brunner looked at me sternly, as if he had been expecting something like this. "Midoriya, after I find him, meet me in my office."
Oh crap. Today was certainly going to be "interesting."
