The Beginning

In a dark room, the only source of light was a small lamp floating in the darkness. It slowly swayed back and forth; thus, creating the sounds of clanking chains. Besides the clanks present in the room.A loud scream was heard...Then, a figure blocked the source of light illuminating in one spot. The figure has red blood eyes and a sadistic smile. In the figure's hand was a hypodermic syringe filled with red liquid.

The figure slowly brought it down and the screams grew louder.

Red orbs were revealed when a pair of eyes quickly snapped open. Pants came out of the boy's mouth and when he blinked his eyes to adjust his vision. His right eye turned crimson and the pupil turned into a slit. It then turned back to normal when he blinked again.

His breath turned visible in the cold air and he felt his whole body dripping with sweat despite the cold weather. Shakily he stood up and took calming long breaths. Goosebumps littered throughout his body, but it disappeared when he finally stopped trembling.

Seeing that his body is finally relaxed, the young boy proceeds on his journey. His sandals scrunched deeply down on the red colored snow leaving footprints.

He fixed his battered up gray kimono blouse and adjusted the hatchet slung on his waist. He then controls his breathing, so his body could stay warm in the cold weather. His feet didn't stop moving because his body had one goal in mind...

To go home.

He stretched out his right arm to reach out the mask placed on the right side of his head. The mask was white with a red sun design on it. The boy placed the mask on his face to block out the raining snow slapping his face.

"..."

When he finally reached the top of the slope, a wide smile was present on his face. He was finally home! He can be reunited with his parents and siblings again. He picked up his pace and pulled up his mask. When he reached his destination. His smile drops down when his nose picked up the smell of—

"Blood..." He muttered with his eyes wide in shock and before he knew it. His legs started to sprint and his eyes landed on a familiar house. Then, there on the snow covered ground was a girl holding a toddler in her arms, as if she was shielding the little kid from something...

Or someone!

His nose picked up a familiar scent and that's when he realized the left behind message. "Damn it!" He shouted, kneeling down in front of the girl to inspect her.

He rolled her over and his body froze at the familiar face. It was her little sister...

"Nezuko." He cried, as his hands slowly carassed his younger sister's right cheek. He then glanced at the little toddler in his sister's arms and his mind recalled the image of his pregnant mother. He gritted his teeth, as he tried to stop the tears falling in his eyes.

This was the little sibling that he couldn't meet. With a sigh, he checked their pulse and he sigh in relief when he found out that his sister was still alive, but...

His little brother was dead. Anger filled him and slowly he braced himself, as he turned his head to his home. The house's door was broken and the walls were littered with blood. He choked out a sob when he found all his remaining family members dead.

Their limbs were torn off from their body and the boy grew angrier at his family's killer.

He then turned back to his younger sister and without losing hope. He lifted her up with ease to carry her to the nearest village. While running down the snowy mountain, he begins to reassure his unconscious sister or he was reassuring himself.

"Your Tanjiro-niisan is here, Nezuko." He chuckled, "Don't worry, I'm gonna get some help. So, stay alive for oni-san okay."

He held back his tears, 'Why my family?'

That was all Tanjiro Kamado could think, as he carried the bloodied body of his sister on his back, dragging his feet through the heavy snow, as he quickly made his way through the wintery forest. His dream of coming back home after three years was gone! He couldn't care for them anymore like he did all those years ago...

Dammit! He made a promise to his father that he'll protect them, but once again. Another broken promise was made.

As he desperately tried to move his fastest, ignoring any tiredness from the trip to the village, dark thoughts would begin swarming Tanjirou's mind. Would the same thing will happen when he wasn't taken from his home or the outcome will just be the same. Tears spilled down from his eyes, 'All I wished for was to be with my family again, but he happened.'

He should've been there for them, even if it didn't change the outcome. At least he wouldn't have failed as an older brother…

Tanjiro shook his head, as to try and get the negative thoughts off his mind.'You can't think like that! Not now!' He told himself,'Hanako, Takeo, Shigeru, my new baby brother…mom…I'm sorry I wasn't there. But…' He glanced over at his back, as Nezuko groaned slightly, moving her head and mumbling something indiscernible in her unconsciousness,'At the very least I'll save you, Nezuko…so please, hang on! Because I am here! '

The surviving Kamado brother continued to struggle his way through the snow, whispering to his sister in a mantra, "Don't die…please don't die…please hang on…your older brother will save you, so please….Nezuko…" He didn't even have any time to think of what exactly could have caused this whole mess, right now both body and mind were focusing on going forward and saving his sister.

He controlled his breathing and pumped the circulation of blood in his lower body to boost the strength of his legs. He was so focused in fact he didn't even notice when Nezuko's head suddenly began arching upwards before she suddenly let out a gut-wrenching scream and lurched her body to the side. Tanjiro didn't realize this until the last moment as his fragile balance was suddenly thrown off, slipping in the snow and letting go off Nezuko as both of them fell several feet.

Tanjiro adjusted his body and rolled himself forward when his toes touched the snow covered ground. He quickly stood up to look for her sister's body when he smelled it...

The scent of a demon.

His eyes widened when he turned to the source of the smell, only to find Nezuko. A couple feet from Tanjiro, Nezuko now stood tall on her feet with her head hanging low, her bare feet invisible beneath the sunken snow and her bloody kimono fluttering slightly with the wind.

He heard a soft growl and his stomach lurched at the possibility. 'No, it can't be!' He begins to deny it, but fate was crueled to him when the younger girl lunged towards his direction.

Tanjiro narrowed his eyes, using the forward drive of his sister. He dodge her by turning slightly to the right and grabbing the back of her cloth to flip her over. He heard a gasp and his heart cracked at the thought of inflicting pain to his sister.

He then kneeled down over her, locking her legs with his thighs and pinning her arms above her head. The boy tried his best to hold the transformed demon girl with his brute force, as he begins to knock some sense into her with his words.

With no other options at this point, he decided that his best bet would be to reach out to his sister. Was there anything of her old self still there, Tanjiro knew that she'd stop herself from hurting him.

"Nezuko!" He called out, "You gotta stop this! You can fight back against it! I know you can!"

Despite his pleading though, all Tanjiro got from his efforts was a slight narrowing of her eyes as if she was trying to make sense of what he was saying, though her struggle against him didn't decrease in the slightest. He pursed his lips, his arms pushing her further down to keep her at bay and he pleaded with her one last time, "Please….you're my little sister…you're all I have left…"

This seemed to reach something within Nezuko though, and she suddenly stopped pushing up on him, her eyes widening and her struggle ceasing before realization finally seemed to hit her and tears began to flow from her eyes. Tanjiro couldn't help but to let out a smile then, realizing that his sister was indeed still there.

"Nezuko, I—" He never finished his line of thought as an unfamiliar smell hit him, a shadow suddenly being cast over him and Nezuko. Quickly, he held her sister despite her trashing, as he rolled over to the right when a blade embedded itself to their previous spot.

He was about to yell at the intruder when he felt no weight in his arms. His eyes widened when he found his sister gone in his arms. Slowly, he arched his neck up to see a man with blue eyes and long black hair holding his sister with a sword held up on her neck.

Tanjiro's eyes widened, 'A demon slayer!?'

"Don't move!" The swordsman ordered as he effortlessly kept Nezuko in place with one arm. "My job is to slay demons." He said in the same emotionless tone. "Needless to say, I'm going to decapitate your sister."

He knew that it was useless to reason with him because they live on a oath to kill every demon. But, he tried nonetheless, Hold on! Nezuko hasn't killed anyone yet!" Tanjiro said back with his arms opened before proceeding on his plea, "So please spare her!"

The black haired man narrowed his eyes at him, "What are you even trying to say!" He asked, as he tightened his grip on his sister. "If you release a demon, all they do is devoure! Do you want more innocent lives to be gone if you release a demon!"

Tanjiro gritted his teeth, knowing that the slayer was right. However, he was stubborn and he wouldn't let anything happen to his family again. Quickly, he gathered some snow in his hand and balled it up. The slayer raised his eyebrows at him, but it widened when Tanjiro threw the snawball at him.

He proceeds to cover, hiding among the trees, as he threw stones at him. When he finally got behind the man, he brought out his hatchet. He swung the object towards the slayer, but it was blocked when the swordsman turned around to block his attack. Tanjiro then leaped up, sliding the blade of his hatchet towards the man's blade.

It looks like the demon slayer twisted his katana to flicked off Tanjiro's hatchet and the boy himself with his own brute strength. Now in the air, Tanjiro stretched out his leg to send a kick towards his face while he used misdirection, so the man's attention was elsewhere and not at the hatchet he threw behind his back.

The man knocked Tanjiro back by hitting him in the gut with the end of the katana's handle. He flew a good centimetres back before crashing his back on a tree. He slid down slowly while hissing at the pain on his back. He saw the slayer was unfazed by his attacks and the man didn't even sweat!

However, a victirous smile came up to his lips when his hatchet came closer towards the man, but it dropped when the man moved his head out of the way.

Although, he snickers a little bit when the blade of the hatchet cut off a lot of the man's hair.

Shock was on the man's face and Tanjiro must have caught him off guard since Nezuko finally escaped from the man's grip.

She kicked the man away and proceeded to run towards Tanjiro. Once again shock came over the man face when the demon girl stood protectively in front of her brother. A large smile appeared on Tanjiro's face seeing his sister protecting him.

Before he could yell out to her to ran away. The girl proceeds on attacking the man who had a new look in his eyes. Tanjiro tried to stand up when the man delivered a blow to her sister. She was knocked out and the boy made his way towards her side.

Before the boy could attack once again. A bamboo piece was thrown at him and he raised both of his eyebrows at the man in front of him who wore an unreadable expression, "Go see an old man named Urokodaki Sakonju who lives at the foot of Mt. Sagiri. Tell him that Tomioka Giyu sent you." The man moved away from them, as he turned his back to them. "She seems to be all right since it's cloudy now, but never let her be exposed to the sunlight, okay?" With those words, the swordsman, Giyu, disappeared.

That was a quick turn, but Tanjiro didn't complained. He was greatful that the man had spared her.

Tanjiro watched the man's back for a second before turning towards her sister. He quickly wrapped his arms around her, "Thank you..." He cried, happy that he had managed to protect the only remaining member of his family.
