This is the offering to Kadam Week 2015 prompt 5:Another Point of View
Some would believe that their story started that day we all performed for a guarded freshie.
Truth is that, said freshie had been in our fearless leader's eyes since before "the angel" was even a student here.
I was one of the lucky ones to be there the night it all began. I saw how Adam's eye assumed a dreamy look I hadn't seen since we were both freshmen, and he was still with the ex that shall not be mentioned.
I was just as enchanted to Kurt Hummel's voice, Madam T made sure to make a name out of him the moment she allowed him to audition during the Winter Showcase... The most exclusive event focused mainly on promoting vocal performers, the pride and joy of the Dean of Vocal Performance.
And there we were, all stunned in what was clearly a cold performance as that, the panic at being put on the spot that way had been clear enough in the quick stride outside the room during the intermission.
And there he stood, more professional than some of the Perk haunting the school for their third year at Nyada. With a barely perceptible wavering in his voice during his introduction, and only deep heartfelt emotions and crystal clear notes during his singing.
The applauses before he even finished were inevitable, like inevitable was our fearless leader's infatuation.
When Kurt Hummel returned to the table shared with that year's Diva of the Perks and sat with her Ken Perk my hopes of any of our path crossing in a pleasant manner dimmed.
And our fearless leader, the sweetest man that anyone could ever meet, still was convinced we'd see more of the angel...
And bless his soul I could not believe it, at first we thought that Kurt staring at our pristine signup poster was a fluke, most freshies looked, then they asked what the Adam's Apples were, and poof like mist in the sunlight, they disappear to never be heard again...
I was sure the Perks' Diva was soon to convince the new freshie who didn't even know how much of a big deal he was already, before even being accepted.
And yet at the second time he was seen standing in front of our poster, our fearless leather convinced himself, and all of us, that we were going to give it a good shot and reach out. Because no one so amazing should ever look as alone as he seemed to be, and he reminded us all how each and every one of us had been in that place.
That was the kind of speech our fearless leader was able to, it was enough for most of us to be willing to make fools of ourselves for the sake of fun and to bring a smile to a sad angel's lips.
No one but the two of them knew exactly what Adam said that was convincing enough for Kurt to follow our fearless leader into the auditorium where we were waiting.
But it was surprisingly a huge rush performing for an audience who was there to listen not judge. To provoke smiles and half outraged half delighted laughter, instead of sneers of derision.
If this is what the perks felt like while performing, I guess I could get why someone would choose that life.
But returning back to our favourite couple, that day we were the one putting a smile on his face, on the following that privilege had become Adam's alone.
They both had been hurt, it took me and the others a little time to get the story out of our apple pie.
Only to discover that Adam already knew...
We all saw how our fearless leader made it a personal mission, to undo the damage done by small town minds and what was an idiotic ex, honest compliment after honest compliment, adoring looks and bearing his heart for apple pie with that vulnerable open honesty so rarely found.
The more days passed, the stronger they grew together. And we were there to see what for most was a reversed cinderella's story. The popular freshie falling for the hot foreign senior on the verge of leaving soon after graduation, a story bound to last just till the end of the school year.
When those rumours started to float around the student body, after apple pie swept the floor, and knocked the perks' diva's ego down few notches, in the vocal equivalent of measuring dicks that's the perks' midnight madness. At that time we all found it extremely hilarious...
While it was true that for a performing senior Adam wasn't exactly on top of the school's idiotic social structure, it wasn't like he was going to disappear into the sunset alone after graduation, kinda hard when one has to start their masters in the following year... Even harder for our fearless leader to be booted out of the colonies and back to Essex while holding dual citizenship...
But apple pie was just as a sweet boy as Adam, and with a too wide forgiving streak in him, to the point he still catered the harridans that lived with him...
How Adam had survived, being snowbound with those two and only Kurt as advantage, had been a mystery I could not solve.
I did know though that the first night Adam was back home I saw my friend wondering if he was just a rebound, doubts upon doubts if he was doing everything wrong, if he should instead allow Kurt to go back with the ex...
At hearing those fear induced ramblings I did the only sensible thing and throw a pillow at Adam for starting to talk like a numbskull while he wasn't one. I suggested lovingly that he should talk with Kurt before making unilateral decisions about the two of them...
Ok and maybe my tough love intervention had a little more swearing and pillow smacking, but the heart of it was the same...
I wasn't going to let apple pie go back to the toxic ex any more than I had allowed Adam to return together with the douche one they finally broke up.
And if Kurt himself was not someone I could directly support and influence, then by all means I wouldn't have allowed Adam to walk away from a relationship that managed to bring starlight in both their eyes.
After that, they were happy, at least until Kurt had to go back to the backward hell hole in the middle of nowhere. I remember calling him the evening before his flight back, to confirm the details only to find Kurt having a panic attack because the toxic ex had a proposal planned out for him and apparently apple pie's dad was into it...
It made me extremely mad, but everyone should have been very proud of me, I didn't vent and raged, I stayed calm and asked two very important questions.
First of all Kurt had to decide if he wanted to receive that proposal, and lose Adam and what they had built in New York, because it's just fucked up being with someone and hoping to receive a marriage proposal by someone else... And I sort of needed to know if I was going to have to keep the pieces of our fearless leader together.
Despite my hard ass attitude I didn't lay it too hard on apple pie, he was our sweet as a pie freshie and I just wanted to look out for both of my men.
When Kurt confirmed that no he didn't want to be faced with the pressure of the whole tristate area watching whatever grand production his ex had cooked up but he worried about the fact his dad was so partial and involved in the plan...
I regretted that it had to be done by phone because my love comes across way better in person, when I can actually throw pillows or socks toward the head of the boys when they talk stupid. So I calmly coached apple pie into breathing normally and then asked him the second very important question... Did his frikking backwards town own a taxi service he could call and go to the airport?
I swear I could hear the confused blinking happening, when I got the still lost yes I gently suggested Kurt to get his bag call a cab and go to the airport now...
And yes my suggestion was a gentle one, with the promise of immeasurable pain if apple pie dared to act like an idiot after what he just told me...
Oh and that I had better hear the eta on his arrival at the airport as soon as he closed the call asking for his cab...
I loved when my men were smart enough to do as I instructed them... By the time Kurt told me he was on his way to the airport, with a message left to the parents and his backpack on him. I already figured out that even if the airlines were going to give him stinks to move up the return date, we could collectively chip in and buy him a new ticket to come home tonight and told him so.
We were all lucky that Kurt was a smart cookie and he managed to use whatever little performance lessons he got this far in the semester and convince the gate assistant to move the ticket, probably with a sob romantic story about his lover being back in New York.
I sadly wasn't informed on what persuasion technique saved our collective wallets that time...
Only our fearless leader received the full story, we all guessed those were the benefits of being the loving boyfriend offering his apartment as safe heaven from backstabbing harpies...
With Kurt safely home in New York we all were more or less happier and more relaxed, the icing on the cake was when Blanderson arrived and joined Nyada.
It served us very well that both Adam and I were in the master programs, that allowed a front row show to the Welcome to the Berdenson's madness extravaganza... How did our apple pie escape the crazy being fed into the Ohio kids was another mysteries for the ages...
Or maybe it was our spectacularly wonderful presence in apple pie's life that cured him of that brand of crazy...
It was a field day seeing Blanderson walking into Nyada thinking he could have the world only to discover he was a distorted version of Alice in wonderland without a happy ending... Because apple pie was totally out of the shortie's league, of course other than being happy in a strong and loving relationship with our fearless leader...
The good thing that came out of the toxic hobbit coming was that once the lease of apple pie's loft was up he gave the direct cut to all the members of the Ohio's bandwagon and fully embraced his life with all of us from New York.
And I had no intention of listening to anyone even mentioning how biased my opinion was, the result of Kurt losing the weights was almost miraculous for everyone's mental health...
Le parents' were easily charmed by our lovely fearless leader, and of course there were no doubts whatsoever that the Crawfords would fall just as hard for the man able to put that light into their boy's eyes...
I had to admit that any doubt I ever had in the beginning, before knowing Kurt, completed faded away by the time those two were celebrating their first anniversary...
Adam, Kurt I have to say I am glad I had the opportunity to be at your sides for the good, the bad, the happy and the rough times.
On occasions like this one, it is tradition to offer congratulations to the happy couple, but I have to say it is enough looking into your eyes to know you'll meet the future like the wonderful men you both grew up to be.
Remember me and the rest of our friends in your next Tony acceptance speech, or I can promise you we'll descend at yours to eat and drink you out of your house.
Hey!
How dare you say that's nothing different than any other time we come? That's it boys next round of drinks is on the married people...
Oh look that's just the two of you...
