Chapter 1:
A/N: There'll be pretty much explained during the first chapters, but there are some things I wanted to establish before I start with this story:
Their ages: Monica and Rachel = 19 y/o
Their ages: Ross, Chandler and Joey = 20 y/o
Their ages: Phoebe = 21 y/o
Also, my mother language isn't English, so if you spot any mistakes, I'd really appreciate it if you'd let me know in the reviews or pm.
I'm not really planning on doing suggestions, nevertheless, if you think of something you can always let me know and who knows, maybe I'll make an exception and integrate it in my story :).
Monica woke up from a buzzing sound. Her sleepy eyes slowly opened while she turned off her alarm clock and took in her surroundings. After a few seconds of confusion, she remembered where she was. It was her first night in her dorm at college. She wanted to get used to everything before her first day so she would have a little less stress than normal. It was Friday, eight in the morning. She slowly stood on her legs and rubbed in her still sleepy face. On her way to the sink in her dorm, she heard someone stirring.
"Hmpfff…"
"Good morning", Monica said.
"Morning", Rachel answered, "What time is it?"
"It's five past eight. I'm gonna wash me up and get some breakfast. Do you want to come with me?"
"Alright, but give me some time to wake up and get ready. I'm not going to get breakfast in my pj's"
Monica smirked and turned around to take a washcloth. She washed her face and got dressed. When she was ready to go she turned to Rachel to see if she had gotten up yet. Rachel was asleep again. Monica decided to leave a short note that said she was going to get breakfast and bring some for her, and then went downstairs to the cafeteria.
While standing in line to get them breakfast, Monica looked around her. This was all very new for her. Sure, her brother had told many stories about this place when he was home, but this was the first time she was here for herself. Yesterday, she was determined to get everything unpacked before she got to sleep and when she was done it was already half-past eleven. She got in bed and fell asleep almost instantly. Today, she wanted to see the rest of the building.
"Do you want something hot to eat?"
Monica shook loose of her thoughts and looked at the woman before her. She was at the first part of the breakfast buffet and she had to choose if she wanted a cold or hot breakfast.
"Could I have some scrambled eggs, please?" Monica asked.
The blonde lady turned and took a plate. When the eggs were ready, she gave the plate to her.
"There you go," the blonde lady smiled at her. When Monica looked at her, she seemed about the same age as her.
"Thank you", Monica took the plate from her and smiled back. She moved forward and took some fruit and a few buns. She found a tray between the drinks and the food and took one to place all the food on it. She took two glasses of orange juice and turned to go upstairs.
When Monica got back to her dorm, she found Rachel finally getting up from bed. After they ate, they had decided to go back to the cafeteria first. They had to return their tray with their glasses and plate and Rachel hadn't seen the cafeteria yet.
Rachel began to walk to the tables once they got there and Monica brought their tray back. When she stood at the buffet, she noticed there was a basket full of muffins. They must have just refilled it. She took two and walked to Rachel. They went to sit down at a table near the big windows to eat their muffins. Suddenly, they heard a loud clatter from behind them. They turned around and Monica immediately noticed that the clatter came from the friendly, blond lady she was helped by earlier at the buffet. She had dropped a tray with quite a lot of cutlery on it. Monica and Rachel both got up and started to help her. She gave them an appreciative smile.
"I'm sorry, this is my first day here and I'm not really used to carry trays and stuff", she said.
"Oh, it is our first day here too! You work at the buffet, right?" Monica asked.
"Yeah, I really needed a job and they had a spot open. My name is Phoebe, by the way."
"I'm Monica and this is Rachel", Monica said, gesturing with her arm to her friend.
"Nice to meet you!", Rachel said.
"Well, we're going to explore the rest of the building. See you later, Phoebe", Monica smiled at her while stepping away with Rachel. They spent the rest of the day looking where they would have their classes and checking out all the public places at the building, like the library.
At six o'clock they went to get dinner. They approached the line waiting at the buffet and joined behind two young men. Monica immediately recognized her brother.
"Hey, Ross!"
Ross looked behind him and smiled when he saw his little sister with her best friend since the beginning of high school, Rachel. Monica noticed Chandler staring at her. He tried to hastily look away when she caught his eye. She'd changed a lot since the last time they saw each other. Monica was now a lot skinnier after months of dieting. She still wasn't really confident in her own skin, but she was getting there.
"Hi! So how was your first full day at NYU?" Ross asked.
"Pretty great. Rach and I explored the building a bit so we won't get lost on the day that the classes start"
"Yeah, the block with the kitchens for culinary is at the other side of the building. What are you studying, Rachel?"
"I'm gonna do fashion designing", Rachel answered.
"Nice!"
"So you're going to design clothes?" Ross's friend, Chandler, asks.
"It's always been my dream to become a famous fashion designer. What do you guys study?"
"I study palaeontology."
"I study data analytics."
Monica and Rachel both frowned at Chandler's answer so he clarified: "It something with numbers and I get to work on computers quite often, so that part is fun."
Once they got their food, they sat down at the same table Rachel and Monica sat in the morning with their muffin. They ate while they talked about college. The guys, who had already been there a year and were starting their second year, gave the girls some pointers.
"Watch out for Mr Jones if you get out of your dorm after midnight on weekdays. He is one of the teachers who sometimes walks around the entire building and when he catches students outside their dorms, they have to clean the entire cafeteria after dinner the following night" Chandler warned.
Monica snickered "It seems like you speak from experience." Chandler winced and continued eating his meal.
"Well, we're going to check out our new dorm. We asked to be roommates again this year." Ross said after finishing his meal and picking up his tray.
"Alright, do you mind if we join you?" Monica asked.
"Not at all."
They put their trays away and walked to the Secretary. "Hi, would we be able to get the key to our dorm? It should be number 34", Chandler said to the lady in front of them.
"Oh right! You're the special ones!" They all shared confused looks with each other. "Yeah, there was a mix-up and we hadn't enough rooms for all the students. They gave you another roommate. To compensate, we gave you a four-person dorm. Normally, you should have enough room."
She gave them each a key and they went upstairs to their dorm.
"What are you gonna do? I mean, it's possible that you don't even like the other person. Are you just gonna let them get away with this?" Monica began.
"Look, there has been a mix-up and there isn't much we can do about it. You know, he might be fun. Let's just go check it out first", Ross said while they came to their floor. Monica muttered something he couldn't understand and Chandler began to open the door to their room. They went inside and put their bags down.
"Well, it is quite a large space. And there are four beds, so we can let someone stay over if they need to", Chandler commented. All four of them turned around when they heard the door open again. A young man with dark hair came inside in his bathrobe while drying his hair. He jumped back when he saw the crowd in front of him.
"Hi, you must be our roommate", Ross said to break the ice.
"Yeah, I'm Joey."
"I'm Ross and this is Chandler. We'll be your roommates. These are Monica, my sister, and Rachel. They stay in another dorm."
"Nice to meet you", Rachel smiled. Chandler suddenly clapped his hands and announced "Well, we better start unpacking."
The girls went back to their own dorm after telling the boys they were staying in number 24. Monica made it clear if they needed any help to organize their dressers or to clean their dorm, they could call her with the phone on the bureau.
"So, what do you think of Joey?" Rachel asked once they were inside their own dorm.
"I don't know. He doesn't seem very bright."
"Oh, I don't know. It just really cool that he follows dramatic arts to become an actor. Just imagine, if he's famous, we'll be able to say that he slept in the same dorm as your brother."
Monica shrugged and started to get her things ready to take a shower. "I'm gonna take a shower, but I'll try to be back soon."
"Sure, take your time!"
She walked into the hallway and went into the bathroom. They shared it with three other dorms. To make sure, she had a couple of cleaning cloths with her so she could wash the bathroom before she used the shower. She was glad to see that she was the first one to use the bathroom. There weren't any pools of water and all the standard products they set ready in case anyone forgot their soap for instance, weren't unpacked yet.
She locked the door and started to get undressed. While she checked the water she noticed there was a mirror on the left side of the shower. She looked at herself for a moment. She was proud that she had lost so much weight in such a short amount of time, though she still had to get used to her new body. Her eating habits also weren't that good. Before, she used to eat way too much, but now, because of her strict diet, she didn't eat enough. Still, she had a few pounds to go before the weight she wanted to achieve. She kept telling herself once she got there, things would start to get easier. She hoped she'd be right. She got in the now hot water and let it run through her hair and on her body. She let her mind wander back to the beginning of dinner. She was actually quite surprised when she saw Chandler. He finally got rid of his ridiculously ugly Flock of Seagulls hair. He looked pretty handsome in his casual clothes and a new, fresh haircut.
When she had turned the water off and had dried herself with her towel, she began with her cleaning ritual. This way, the next person would have a clean bathroom to use. She went back to her dorm and found Rachel reading some magazine. They decided to call it an early night. This way they could catch up with their missed sleep from yesterday.
