A/N: Hey fellow Kuroko no Basket fans! I've recently watched the first season on Netflix. And that's it so far. But I've loved Ryota Kise and Yukio Kasamatsu and felt like creating a sweet, high school love story with an OC. I rarely create OCs but this one I'm quite fond of. If you like an easy read with teen angst, humour and love, this one is for you!
Yukio Kasamatsu.
Yukio Kasamatsu could not talk to girls. It was a terrible weakness. Not all girls. He was fine with some of his senpais and the class president. But the pretty girls, the popular girls and the girls he had crushes on- to them he was a mute. It was already his third year in high school and he didn't have a single girlfriend. It was sad, really. Of course being the captain of the basketball team kept him popular and in demand, and the fact that he was so aloof made him all the more desirable, but the truth was he was getting frustrated with his inability to talk to girls. Especially when they were so keen to talk to him.
His stood near the school gates on the first day of school and as per tradition, the upper class men ogled and ranked all the new nervous first years that were pouring in. 'Fresh meat' they enthusiastically called them.
"Ahh check that out one with the bows, she's super cute, just my type," Koji said with a hint of hunger.
"Tch everyone is your type man. Look at that one, she's got potential," Daisuke said with a low whistle. The girls could feel the wolffish stares from the upperclassmen. Some painfully shy and nervous on the first day tugged on their school bag clasps and looked down at the floor. Some of the bolder girls giggled and in turn discussed the boys, whispering amongst themselves with flirtatious eyes.
"Ahh that one waved at me! What a cutie!"
Kasamatsu stood with his arms crossed across his chest, his hand holding an old photo. The whole ordeal made him slightly uncomfortable.
"What are you doing here cap? Decided to see if there's anyone you might fancy?"
Kasamatsu grimaced. "I'm waiting for a family friend."
"Ah really? Is it a boy or a girl?"
"Girl," he said hotly. He hated nosy people but butting in from teammates was just unavoidable.
"Nice, is she cute?"
Kasamatsu showed them her photo. It was not great quality but he had no other photos of her. The girl just disappeared out of his life and removed herself from all social media. Now that she was back in Kanagawa, his parents asked him to make sure that she was welcomed properly in school.
The utter silence from the boys said enough. She was nothing special and they would finally stop pestering him. The photo had a dorky girl doing a peace sign, her arm wrapped around his 10 year lanky old self. She had a thick fringe and a mouthful of braces. She wore a neon orange top with stripy green skirt. It had been three years since he last saw her. He had definitely changed. He wondered if she did too.
"Ahh who is that babe over there? Now that is definitely my type. Boys I call dibs."
"Yes, my favourite one by far. Should I go over and say hi?" Daisuke said, elbowing keen Koji out of the way.
Kasamatsu peeled his eyes off the photo to see what all the fuss was about. He knew immediately who they were talking about. She stood out from the crowd. The girl was tall and her sleek black hair had a beautiful shine to it. She walked confidently, with one earphone in her ear.
Her eyes crinkled as her face broke into a grin. Smiling made her all the more attractive. He realised with dread that she was grinning at him. No wait, she was walking towards him.
"Yukio!"
His name on her lips made him freeze. That voice was so familiar.
"Hey! Long time no see!" she said, putting away her earphone, confidently striding up to him and enveloping him in a hug. He heard grunts of disbelief from other guys.
"Ehh captain you know this girl?!" Some of the boys gasped. Daisuke looked disappointed.
He froze. That anxiety began creeping in. She was too pretty. He wouldn't be able to talk to her. But wait- how did she know him? His thoughts were swirling in his head and as he looked into her eyes, it clicked.
"H-H-Haruka? Is that you?"
"Y-Y-Yukio, yes it is!" She said mocking but not unkindly. She laughed and gave a hearty punch to his arm, as she did when they were children. "Did you forget me?"
Kasamatsu stood stumped, unable to reply. How did she manage to change this much in three years? He glanced at the photo. Haruka's eyes flew to it and she let out a horrified gasp.
"Oh my god why do you have our childhood photos?"
Before he had a chance to reply she took it from his hands. She looked at the photo fondly and let out a hearty laugh. "We're both so ugly." She gave the photo back to him. "But what great memories we shared, ne, Yukio?"
"Jesus Christ captain say something, would you," his teammate muttered smacking him on the back.
Kasamatsu finally snapped back from the shock of seeing a different Haruka and found his tongue.
"H-Hi Haruka, not of course I didn't forget, I just didn't recognise you.. You look so... uh… different now," he said scratching the back of his head. She beamed and took it as a compliment.
His muteness was fast disappearing because this was someone he knew. His dorky childhood friend. He realised he could actually talk to her. Normally. Phew.
"My parent asked me to show you around. Do you have your schedule yet?" he asked.
"No, only registration form," she said waving a piece of paper. He noticed how pretty her nails were. The same nails that dug dirt and were sticky from all the dangos she demolished.
"We'll need to submit that to the office. Let's go I'll show you."
As he took his bag, he heard Koji whisper. "Cap you lucky bastard."
As they began to leave, his other teammate, Yoshitaka, asked, "aren't you going to wait for Kise Ryota? The famed player of Generation of Miracles?"
"Why would I wait for him?" He asked with a scowl, "I'll meet him on the court and see what's all the the damn fuss is about."
