The new day came on the Grace Field Farm, as many of the mothers and sisters were gathering cattle children from the other farmhouses, it was only in a few hours before the demons, Sonju and Mujika would arrive to see their friends Emma, Ray, Norman, and the rest of their family for the last time as they all depart to the human world. However, in getting ready, Emma had slipped away from her friends and family. She now walked down an empty hallway of the compound. But why? She needed to be away from everyone as her mindset her on a final mission before their departure.
They had finally done it. Today, every cattle child from across this demon world will now be free from the world of demons. Ever since the night of their escape, Emma, her family, and the new friends they've made have all dreamed of this very moment. A moment where they would no longer be livestock and fed to power-hungry demons and treated as food. Her family would hopefully forever live a peaceful life in the human world that was waiting for them. No more running, no more fearing of death, and no more will Emma's family lose their own lives.
Everyone was happy, but Emma was still hiding something from them all.
Before breaking in, Vincent had briefly discussed with everyone in the rescue teams about which room were in the compound and where they were. Emma further planning for this at the time, memorised the layout of the base before the break-in had started. There were 4 levels, including two underground in the storage warehouse where they kept their family, and the Passageway that connected to both the human and demon world. She was walking along the second floor, heading for the study room which belonged to the deceased Ratri Clan head, Peter Ratri, and knowing that no one would be there at this time. It would be the ideal place for her to find some quiet.
Flashbacks of the deal she made with Him replayed in her mind as she walked down the hallway in a daze. Emma was feeling a pang of guilt in her stomach that wouldn't die down. She had always been someone truthful and straightforward, but she hated to lie to her family. At the time, choosing between their lives and freedom for her memories of them, Emma knew that there was not going to be any other choice that could save her family from this demon's world. Both humans and demons could live peacefully without suffering or being eaten. Emma knew that this was the right choice, but the price was heavy, not only to her but to her family also, especially her oldest friends Norman and Ray. The only thing that she could do when they asked about the promise, was to tell him only a part of what she discussed with him and not reveal too much, to risk them finding too much out.
Emma was not worried though. She knew that making a deal with Him wouldn't have been an easy decision, especially with the price he demanded for her memories, and she was still very scared of what would happen after. Would she end up in the same world as her family? Transported somewhere far away from them, never to see her again? There were many questions that she cannot answer to herself. Emma still felt uncertain of her feelings, though this decision was to ensure that both worlds had peaceful futures. Even in regret, she had no one to blame but herself. Emma was selfish, she knew that. At first, during her escape from Grace Field, she only wanted for her family to survive, live somewhere that they could be happy, and be a peaceful family once more.
However, the past several months after having meeting Sonju and Mujika and seeing how many other kind demons lived to survive in a world, wanting a place for her family to live happily was not the only thing that she wished for anymore. The life of her family wasn't the only thing that mattered to her anymore. Though she would never have thought she could learn to care for the demons of this world, she didn't want there to be any more slaughter and loss, where cattle children and demons were trapped in an endless loop of killed or be killed, and where no one could ever be safe from themselves or each other.
Emma soon approaches two large wooden doors and enters the study. Inside, it looked very luxurious, with fancy furniture and interior design, with also many books alongside two shelves. However, Emma disciplined herself to ignore these, she needed to stay focus and not get herself sidetracked. Approaching the desk in the middle of the room, from her bag she pulls out a piece of paper that she collected from the hideout, and the checker-patterned pen, which previously belonged to William Minerva. Emma looked at it for a moment, the feeling of sadness and anxiety emitted across her chest as it weighed heavily.
Writing a letter was sometimes a challenge for Emma, but at the moment it became more difficult to express her feelings in the right words as if she were talking to them. She thought that she was going to make a mess of things since sometimes she would be too honest and they would come out wrong when written down, but Emma didn't need to write down much. She only needed to explain to them about the new promise, and to what sort of price for their freedom she needed to make to fulfil and protect their future. Putting pen to paper and taking a deep breath in, she exhales slowly as her hand began to write.
Dear Everyone
I hope you all are well and happy wherever you are right now.
I had been untruthful with you all with what I didn't tell you. I'm sorry for not telling you this earlier, but I knew that if I did, you all would have refused to have gone through with it.
The new promise that I made with Him, to allow all of our family and the other children to travel to the human world, required me to give up something in return. He told me what I have to give up was you, and in saying that, I cannot be with you when we all cross the gateway to the human world.
Everyone, please forgive me. Don't think that this choice I made was your fault. For both of you, our family, our friends, even the other cattle children, I wanted to do this. If we still stayed in the demon world, we would be putting our whole family at the risk of being hunted down and eaten, thous repeating what happened back 1000 years ago. Even if we had managed to survive in the demon world and even with Sonju and Mujika's help, we'd still be living at risk of losing more of our family.
I know that what I've done to you was cruel and I probably made a wrong decision by doing this, but you need to know that I am not scared of what will happen. Though I may not be there with you like we planned to be, at least I can have the peace of mind to know that you all are safe. I don't know if we'll ever see each other again, but please, I want you all to live happily for the rest of your days. I know that even without me, you will all do fine on your own. I know that our family can be happy, but even if there was no other way or if I had to go through hell again to do this, I would hesitate. All of you, friends and family, would be my reason to keep going forward.
Tell Chris I said hi when he wakes up. Norman, I hope you, Vincent, Barbra, Cislo, and the other Lambda kids get better. Also, Ray and everyone else, please look out for each other. I hope you all have a happy future.
I love you all so much, I will always remember you in my heart.
Goodbye, Emma.
As she concludes the letter, silver streams of tears fall from her eyes and down her face and making small droplets on top of her letter. Emma could feel her heart tightening and her breath holding in her chest as if she were holding her breath without meaning to. Silent whimpers escaped in a broken voice, and her throat turns dry while she sniffs through her sobs and wipes away her tears with the back of her hand. She felt stupid, writing the word remember, but she couldn't help writing it down without thinking of her situation. Those happy years that she spent with them, alongside Ray, Norman, and their new family. Those memories were all going to disappear in a matter of hours from now.
Writing what she needed to say, Emma knew that this letter was going to hurt them more than it would have been painful to have told them in person. But she knew that this was the only way she could make sure her family get to the human world safely and not continue to stay in the demon world for her sake. Emma didn't want to be the cause of them not having a better life, or one that continued with them fighting, demons killing humans, and humans killing demons. The through of a future where her family could smile, live happily, and be together for years to come and go, she couldn't have asked for a better outcome the this, even if she could not be there to see them grow to smile and laugh with them.
Searching through the other desk draws, Emma was able to find an unused white envelope, and placing the letter inside, she seals it, making a plan to slip it into a backpack of one of the younger siblings, her young brother Phil, she thought, before they all leave. Walking out of the study, wiping away what was left of her tears, she hears Norman's voice on her walkie-talkie, calling for her and informing her that Mujika and Sonju finally arrived.
Emma raised her head as she started walking back to her family, her chest both a mixture of pride and fear swirling through her. Moments from now Emma would haft to say goodbye to them. Forever. But as she walked down the hall, she told herself she needed to stay brave, just for a little more time. Longer enough to let them leave through the gate, long enough to say her final goodbyes.
Author's Note:
After I finished reading the Promised Neverland series I was SOOO SAD by how Emma's fate turned out in the end. I imagined that if I were in her shoes, I would have written down my final feelings to her family, saying that I love them and that they're the world to me even if it may only be the last time I could never tell them that in person. Even after the series concluded on a good note, I still felt as if there should have been a scene where she had gotten to say goodbye to them still before losing her memories. Emma will forever be one of my favourite heroines, for her bravery and devotion to her family, those are qualities about her in a person that I admire and be envious of.
I hope you enjoyed reading this Fanfic! (And before I forget, today I have turned 17 and I'm spending my time right now in Sydney! Happy B-Day to me!)
