Part One
The cinema doors were going to be opening in a couple minutes so Xander was getting the popcorn popped. After working at the theatre in the mall for the last two months you'd think that he would be sick of the smell popcorn but Xander still loved it. It reminded him of his childhood going to the movies with Jesse before he moved away.
"You going to miss being here everyday?" An older man came up beside Xander.
Xander smiled. "Hey, Bill. Yeah, I'd rather be here than back to school tomorrow."
Bill smacked Xander on the shoulder not noticing the flinch. "It's senior year for you. The best year of your life!"
"Somehow I feel like that is not going to be true. At least I'll be here on weekends. Thanks for keeping me on as part time," Xander said. "The money is really going to help me after graduation."
"Do your parents really not know what you've been doing everyday during your summer break?" Bill asked. Did they not wonder where he's been eight hours a day?
"No clue. If I told them I wouldn't have any money saved up because dad would make me pay rent," Xander explained.
Bill wanted to tell Xander he was exaggerating but he went to school with Anthony. "Smart kid. Doors are opening. Have a good shift." He walked into the back.
"Last day of summer and then we're back to school tomorrow, where we'll be seeing each other everyday," A very familiar voice said from behind Xander.
Xander sighed and rolled his eyes before turning around. It was Larry Blaisdell, most popular guy in school, captain of the football team, number one tormentor of Xander who now out of nowhere decided he wanted to date. "Larry, what movie are you seeing this time?" For the last eight weeks Larry had seen two movies a week just to harass Xander.
"Angel has Fallen," Larry said as he leaned over the counter. "So are we announcing our new relationship status tomorrow morning? I'll pick you up in my BMW."
"One ticket for Angel has Fallen. Any snacks or drinks?" Xander asked ignoring Larry's question. Was he supposed to be impressed that he'd be picked up in a BMW? To Xander a car was a car as long as you got from point A to point B back to point A that was all that mattered.
Larry didn't understand Xander. "Large popcorn and Pepsi." He watched as Xander collected his order. "Xander your senior year could either be very good or very bad."
Xander leaned over the counter and he saw the hope in Larry's eyes, he was in for disappointment. "I'd rather go into anaphylactic shock because of my nut allergy and not have my EpiPen, Xander replied before getting Larry's snacks. He placed them on the counter along with Larry's movie ticket. "$22.50, please."
"You've honestly rather be a loser your last year of high school than be with me?" Larry demanded as he held out the money.
Xander looked Larry straight in the eyes and said, "Yes. Enjoy your movie." Larry just stood there staring at Xander. "You tormented me ever since elementary and it got worse when I came out but now that you've accepted your own sexuality you think that erases what you've done? It doesn't. I will never feel anything towards you except hate. Now if you could please get out of line there are other people who would like to get tickets."
Angrily Larry grabbed his stuff and stormed off.
Bill let Xander off early to finish any school shopping he had left. Since Xander was ready for school (education wise at least), he changed into his Sunnydale High t-shirt and decided to go to the food court for some Taco Bell. The food court was surprisingly not too busy so he got his food pretty fast and was able to find a table.
He enjoyed the quiet as he ate, watching the few people that were around. One person stood out though. A bleach blonde boy at least seventeen years old and he was headed in Xander's direction. Xander turned in his seat to see if there was someone behind him. There wasn't. As the boy came closer he saw the intense blue eyes and if the glint on his left eyebrow was any indication he had a piercing. Did Xander mention that he was hot?
Spike had been in Sunnydale for a week trying to get used to the town he'd be calling home until spring. He procrastinated until the last minute to be prepared for school. When his parents had agreed to let him move to America for senior year he thought they were going to let him go to Los Angeles since his plan was always to open a bar there but they told him they wanted him to get used to being alone in a smaller place before sending him into the such a crowded city.
Not that Spike would ever admit it but he through a rich boy tantrum for not getting what he wanted, but when his dad said they'd rent him an apartment instead of making him stay with another family that shut him up real quick. They even threw in a very generous allowance per month, on top of the motorcycle they bought him.
The mall wasn't anything special he'd been to better ones all over the world but it would do until he moved. He decided to get a drink before heading back to his apartment. When he walked into the food court his thirst disappeared. All he could think about about was the brunette boy sitting alone eating, and just Spike's luck he was wearing a Sunnydale High t-shirt. He decided to get a closer look. The closer he got the cuter the boy got. Said boy noticed him as well and why wouldn't he? He was a good looking bloke. He saw the boy turn around thinking Spike was looking at someone else. No one in the last week had caught Spike's eye and he wasn't about to miss an opportunity to chat up the one that finally did.
Once Spike got to the table Xander was staring up at him with hazel eyes. Spike pulled a chair out and sat. "Hey."
Xander blinked a couple of times. "You're British."
"I am," Spike answered. "Name's Spike."
"And my name is Chester," Xander shot back sarcastically and went back to his burrito. He had enough people bothering him in his life he didn't need a hot, British guy added to the mix.
Spike frowned. "What?"
Xander sighed. "Spike and Chester are characters from Looney Tunes."
Spike tilted his head and tried to remember Looney Tunes. "Is Spike the big dog that had the tiny dog always following him?"
"Yup," Xander answered hoping Spike would go away now.
"Does that mean you plan on following me everywhere? Cause I have to say I wouldn't hate it, quite the opposite actually," Spike said as he leaned in closer.
Xander was completely lost, what the hell was happening? "Huh?"
Feeling like he was going to lose the cute boy before he even had him Spike said, "My real name's William Pratt but with my image Spike suits me better, don't you think? I just turned eighteen during the summer, my parents let me move here by myself because I want to open my own club in Los Angeles. It's going to be called The Desoto after the car me and my dad built together. I'm also bisexual and rich." Spike winked.
"I guess," Xander took in the leather jacket (how can Spike be wearing that in the California heat?), he also had black eyeliner on that somehow made his blue eyes pop, an eyebrow piercing, and his nails were pained black. "You definitely stand out from everyone else in town." He thought about what else Spike said. He was only eighteen and he already had a plan about his future while Xander had no clue what he was going to do besides get the hell out of dodge.
"I'll take that as a compliment. So are you going to tell me your name or keep me agony of not knowing?" Spike asked with a slight pout.
Xander finished his burrito before answering. "My name is Alexander Harris, I prefer Xander though. I'm seventeen, graduating with you, I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do after graduation except to get the hell out of Sunnydale. I'm a nerd that watches old cartoons, and read comic books. I'm counting down the days until Infinity War comes out. I'm an out and proud gay man and just because you have money doesn't mean a damn thing to me."
Spike blinked multiple times. This was the first time in his life that money wasn't a factor in someone he was trying to impress. "What?"
"I don't care if you have money or not. It doesn't make you better than anyone who has to live pay check to pay check," Xander explained irritated.
Xander was feisty. "Give me your phone," Spike said holding his hand out.
Confused by the change of subject Xander handed his phone over after unlocking it. Spike's phone was placed in his hand. "What are we doing?"
"I like you," Spike said as he put his phone number in Xander's phone. He noticed it was an iPhone 5. How was that possible? The iPhone 11 was coming out in a month. Spike already had his pre-ordered. "Give me your number."
"Has anyone told you that you're bossy?" Xander muttered as he did what he was told.
Spike smiled. "Everyone, pet, everyone." Maybe Sunnydale wasn't going to be a bad place to live.
Note: I know it's not this easy to get Spike situated into America but for the story's sake I'm going to have it be.
Note 2: I know it's weird that I have this set in 2018-2019 but honestly do we want it to take place in 2020-2021?
