Prologue
Being the son of a well-known mercenary guaranteed that your life could never be normal.
That's what 16 year old Keith Mason was taught ever since his birth.
Having black hair and blue eyes, the boy had been trained well in many different forms of martial arts and weapon handling. His father reminded him everyday to keep his guard up, to be aware of his surroundings and to limit contact with the outside of their mansion as much as possible.
Keith had abided by his rules and never once had he doubted his father.
Even if Keith knew that both his mother and father were mercenaries (although his father was more well-known for his almost 100% success rates in any task he was assigned) he didn't resent them for it.
Rather, he just wanted to live a life of normalcy away from all the violence of the world. As impossible as that was, he didn't stop dreaming of that day.
And maybe it was because of this that he had slacked off and let his guard down.
None of his training had included how to deal with a life threatening wound. Keith lay on his back, the gaping hole in his abdomen sending searing pain into his nervous system, blood pooling around his mutilated body. He could smell the waste that had poured out of his intestine and he knew that his bladder had released it's contents as well, decorating his torn and bloody jeans with urea.
If Keith still retained the ability to move, he would've struggled to find help but unfortunately his legs and arms were either broken or out of alignment. Briefly he wondered how he ended up like this.
A black truck...masked men...guns flashing... cliff side...falling...
Oh that's right...he was pursued by unknown assailants and was hit with a fucking Toyota truck off a cliff. Right outside his gate nonetheless. Wryly he imagined himself yelling at his father to choose a better a location next time, one that didn't have cliffs for fucks sake. The thought of a "next time" made him grimace. There wouldn't be a next time. He wasn't stupid, he could tell that he was seconds or maybe minutes away from death.
He really wished he had a few poetic last words before his demise but alas, he was never really that interested in literature.
Closing his eyes and feeling the pain numb, he exhaled one last time and let death take him to wherever it wanted.
"Open your eyes."
Huh?
What was that voice? Didn't he just die? Regardless he did as the voice instructed and opened his eyes.
He was floating in a shadowy realm, purple haze and pure black being the only thing he could see. There in front of him was a figure cloaked in the shadowy essence. The only thing knew about this shadowy being was that it was talking to him and it sounded feminine.
"Who are you? That's an obvious question but 'did I just die?' isn't. Either way could please answer my questions?" Keith asked and eyed the person cautiously. The person floated there and after a brief moment he received an answer.
"Who I am isn't of importance. As for your second question, you have indeed died. You were hit by a truck and sent flying off a cliff. It was truly a gruesome death."
Keith gave a grim chuckle, "Yeah it was, but more importantly how do you know this?" It occured to him that he was being much too calm for someone that had just died, but he figured that it had something to do with this omnipotent-ish being before him. Sure they hadn't shown him any godly abilities yet, but he could tell just from looking at them.
They were most definitely not human.
"I have been watching you for quite some time, but I am not here to discuss about your past life. I am here to send you off to be reincarnated to your next life."
Reincarnated...?
"You mean that shit is real?!" Keith blurted aloud, forgoing his earlier calm and collected demeanor for excitement and restlessness.
The person before him didn't seem fazed however.
"Yes, and as I am pressed for time, I will now begin the reincarnation process..."
The person was suddenly cut off, and a few seconds later their feminine voice sounded again, but this time discomfort was evident it's tone.
"A change of plans, you are to be reincarnated into someone else's body and gain their memories and past. You will in turn lose all memories of your past life but will gain knowledge and instructions about what to do in the world you will be going to."
"Wait wait, I don't get to choose or anything? Also instructions? You're not making sense here, I don't really have any obligation or a sense of duty to fulfill any purpose." Keith responded.
"My apologies, but I am not in any position to allow you to do what you wish."
"Of course you are, but tell me, is this world that I'm about to be sent to more dangerous than my old one?" Keith hoped it wasn't.
He just wanted a normal life damnit.
"I cannot tell you."
He thought as much, but now one of his suspicions were proven correct. "You're not the one in charge here aren't you? You're taking orders from someone more powerful than you are. So even the afterlife has a sort of government."
"Indeed, now I shall begin the reincarnation process as my superior doesn't want to wait any longer. I wish you good luck. And maybe you will find the normal life you wanted."
With those words, Keith felt himself fall into unconsciousness.
He thought getting reincarnated would be much more...well, flashier?
Birds singing and the feeling of warmth on their skin. A pair of red eyes opened and blinked wearily as they glanced at their surroundings. Blonde hair waved in the calm breeze, and they couldn't help but shiver at the cold air. "Why is it so cold?" Saying this they looked down at themselves and raised an eyebrow.
"Ah that answers that." They said and looked around for a mirror or any reflective surface. They found one leaning against a stone fence and took a few seconds to check themselves.
"So you're telling me, that I'm in the Re:Zero universe, and more importantly,"
They stomped their feet and angrily pointed to the sky as if accusing it and yelled "Why did you reincarnate me as Felt?!"
I just had to do it man XD
