Yamato (Tenzo): 16 years old; 2nd year
My name is Hatake Kakashi. I am seventeen years old and a third year at Konoha Academy for the gifted; a notoriously elite high school. Most teachers and fellow peers regard me as a genius among geniuses. It is a sentiment that I usually do not pay much mind to, but despite my easy-going nature I am pretty annoyed right now. Instead of going home to relax after a long day of Monday classes, I am instead heading home to tutor one of my juniors. Konoha Academy recently welcomed a new school head; Minato-sensei. He is the youngest Konoha has ever had and once a child prodigy himself. I thought it would actually make my life easier when Mintato-sensei became the school head since I know him from when he used to mentor me in academics and martial arts. Back then he was just an easy-going pushover, but now he is surprisingly eager. He immediately enacted some troublesome program for prodigies, like me, to mentor other students who show exceptional potential. The idea is to nurture these future stars and foster their natural prowess to turn them into truly remarkable people. The thought behind it is all well and good, but the problem is, currently I am the only mentor in this 'amazing' program. A position that was forced upon me without the slightest chance of refusing. It is so tiresome. I am not cut out to be anyone's role model or tutor. And besides that, instead of going home to catch up on Make-Out Tactics, I now have to do something tedious with my free time.
I let out a heavy sigh behind my mask as I shuffle closer and closer to my studio apartment. Once I am close enough, I can spy my Monday mentee sitting dutifully on my front steps with his backpack still on his shoulders and his chin resting on his knees. I almost sigh again. Not only do I have to do this, but my Monday mentee is just so…boring. He perks up when he notices my approach, staring at me with those dark ghoulish eyes. He snaps to attention as would a soldier; hopping to his feet as his hand reaches up to secure his long, brown, unkept hair behind his forehead protector. "Kakashi-senpai."
"Yo."
He eyes me with that intense stare as I unlock the door and waltz in as if I am not twenty minutes late. I know he must have been waiting for at least thirty minutes, but he says nothing about it as he follows close behind and mumbles a terse, "Excuse the intrusion." I watch him scurry to the kotatsu and pull out his schoolwork in a not-so-subtle huff but decide to ignore him in favor of a drink. I know he is annoyed at me. We have only met for this program four other times and I have been late every single time. It is clear that he wants so badly to say something. The only question is, will he? Generally, he is very complacent, so I doubt it. As I settle down next to him, he glances at me from the corner of his huge eyes before seemingly making up his mind. "Kakashi-senpai?"
"Hmm?"
"I may have written down our meeting time incorrectly since I am always here well before you. Er…"
An unseen grin crosses my face as he looks at the pencil he is twirling between his slender fingers. "Well I don't know. What time do you have written down, Tenzo?"
"3:00."
"Hm, no, that is the correct time."
"I see…" His dark brows furrow at my nonchalant reply and it is all I can do to hold in my laughter. "And, um, actually Kakashi-senpai, my name is Yamato now not Tenzo."
"Hm?"
"I told you. The new orphanage has me going under the name Yamato now."
My smile quickly turns to a frown as all amusement leaves my face. I watch him closely as he busies himself with his homework. Ever since the orphan was relocated, he has been even more uptight and blindly dutiful. I often try to warn him about brainlessly following orders, but it has all been for not. "Hey Tenzo—"
"Senpai it's Ya—"
"How are things at the orphanage? With that man…Danzo?"
"Everything is fine." Such an automated reply. He did not even glance up from his paper.
"Really?"
"Yes really. I like the structure, and everything is rules oriented, so nothing is ever up for misinterpretation. Everyone has a place and purpose. It is…"
"It is?" I probe when his sentence suddenly drops off.
This time he does meet my gaze, but the stare is so blank I can read nothing from it. "It is fine, as I said before. Why? Why are you asking about that, senpai? Can you tutor me now? Minato-sama wants us to progress to the next set of program lessons this week and we are troublingly behind."
For goodness' sake. "I am asking because I want you to understand the most important lesson I'm trying to leave you with."
"What's that?" Of course that got his attention. He perked up more than Pakkun when I mention 'treats'.
"The very crucial lesson that rules and orders are not to be blindly followed."
Predictably, his face twists into skepticism and he returns his attention back to the assignment. "Kakashi-senpai, if I may be bold, I do not know about that lesson. Rules are there for a reason. If someone is above your station, then their orders are absolute and to be executed without question. Even now, you sit here doing something you would rather not because a superior ordered you to, correct? That is the natural order of things."
"Ngh." This naïve little—how can he only be a year my junior? That dangerous line of thinking only results in people getting hurt. My own father was crushed under the weight of such a mentality and it ultimately led to him committing the unthinkable. The image of his final moments resurfaces in my mind before I can push the haunting memory back down where it belongs. "Answer me this Tenzo."
"Yes, senpai? And in fact, my name is Yamato."
"If the option was following through on an order that could harm a friend or disobeying said order; what would you do?"
"Is this order from someone above me? A superior?"
"Naturally."
"Then, I would unquestionably follow the orders."
Tch. Unquestionably? "Even if it would absolutely prove to be fatal for that friend?"
"That would be unfortunate." The flat tone he uses contradicts his words entirely. "But ultimately, the higher ups know best. They are put in charge for a reason. There must be a logic behind such a decision and it is not my place to doubt it."
"I see…" I can hear my heart thumping a little too loudly in my ears. It feels like all the blood is rushing to my head and my skin is suddenly prickling all over in discomfort. Is this anger? Disgust? No, something heavier. "It seems some people need a more hands on approach to being taught."
"Ano…?" He looks up at me with wide almond eyes full of innocent bewilderment, however, when I reach for him, he remains perfectly still. Seeing as this is my opportunity to quell a certain curiosity, my hand goes straight for those long mahogany locks. Huh? His hair is incredibly soft. My dull nails scratch at his scalp before continuing to glide down, encountering no tangles on the way. "Kakashi-senpai?"
Oops, almost forgot what I was doing. "I do not want you to say anything Tenzo. Not a word. Understood?"
And just like the good boy he is, he readily nods his understanding and snaps his mouth shut.
"Good." A bit reluctantly, I stop petting his hair and instead guide my touch down to his neck. I can feel his pulse quickening under my feather light touch. When my hand grasps the back of his neck, he all but jumps out of his own skin. "Obedient ones like you are probably good at pleasing as well, hm?" Judging by the perplexed look on his face I can tell he has no idea what I mean by that, so I give his shoulder a firm push until he is laying face up on the floor. When I follow to loom over him, he opens his mouth, likely to question or object, but just as quickly closes it when I give him a reprimanding look. To his credit, he does stay dutifully still as I cup his cheek and then slip my hand into his neckline to caress his pronounced collarbone. He screws his eyes shut as my hands continue down to his hips. I can feel him trembling underneath my ministrations. "You know Tenzo—oops sorry, I mean Yamato, having to mentor you is really cutting into my social life."
"…" Even without using words, the way his eyebrows knit together clearly give away his chagrin. He looks like he desperately wants to apologize, but he presses his lips together in a hard line to resist the natural impulse.
"I will admit, I have been feeling a little pent up."
"…"
"Still don't know what I mean?" A quick shake of his head confirms my suspicions, so I shrug and look down my nose at him. "That's okay. I will show you." One of my hands come back up to trace his lips while the other rests pointedly on the band of my pants. My thumb pulls down on his lower lip as slow comprehension lights up his large eyes. "Oh? Do you understand now? Then I will be borrowing your mouth, okay Yamato?"
"Wait! Ah-!" I know he was trying so hard to stop himself, but in the end, terror won out over deference.
"Hoooh? Are you defying your senpai?"
"I-I-I." I almost feel bad watching him sputter and struggle for the right words—or I would feel bad if it were not so cute. His face is so red, that for a moment I wonder if he is going to faint. "I, ah—or, um I-I am sorry Kakashi-senpai!"
"So," A squeak of a noise comes out of him when I lean closer and use my hand on his chin to pry his lips apart. "Are you going to be a good boy then?"
"Eh? Ah—I, I don't think…"
Not good enough. "I do not expect you to think." I lean so close now that I can feel his warm shaky breath on the exposed part of my face. "I expect you to abide by your superiors."
"B-But—" His protests break off with one stern look and my grip slightly tightening on his jaw.
My masked lips ghost over his own trembling ones; just a hair's breadth away and he slams his eyes shut in response. At the last second, I graze my lips across his cheek until they press against his red ear. "Just kidding~"
His eyes snap open at my whispered taunt and I sit up before giving him a close eyed grin. "W-What?"
"I was just teasing Tenzo."
"…" He lies there for a moment in shock, his long locks pooled around him, before finally sitting up and staring at me with those soul-searching eyes. "Kakashi-senpai…you…"
"Do you get it now?"
"Do I…get it?"
"Felt wrong right?" He quickly nods his agreement, so I continue, "You wanted to follow orders like you have been conditioned to, but it was difficult right? How was it?"
"It…was scary." He admits while averting his gaze, prompting me to reach out and rub his head.
"I am sorry that you were scared, but it was necessary. Acting on orders alone is not always in your best interests or in the best interests of those around you. Refusing to think for yourself and acting mindlessly can hurt those around you."
He had instinctively lowered his head under my touch but risks a timid look in my direction after my little lecture. He stays quiet and looks conflicted for a while before finally reaching his own conclusion. "I think…I understand."
"Good." I tussle his hair one more time before leaning my elbow on the table and cracking open the latest issue of Make-Out Tactics.
Naturally, he diverts his attention back to his abandoned schoolwork and for a few minutes no one says a word. Eventually, I am brought out of my deep reading by his hushed voice. "Kakashi-senpai…did you mean what you said earlier?"
"Hm?"
"About this…me…disrupting your social life?"
"Haha no, I never had one of those."
I expected him to get annoyed, but instead he looks…relieved? After another pause, he speaks again in a murmured voice, "I thought perhaps Minato-sama had made a mistake, but I suppose even you have insightful lessons to teach me—"
"Hey! Are you saying you had so little faith in me before?"
"Although," He grumbles on as if I never interjected, "I think you may be learning a bit too much from your ecchi novels."
"Hmm? You interested Tenzo? Let me show you the latest masterpiece from Jiraiya-sama!"
"Wha—no!"
Ignoring his objections, I throw an arm around his shoulders and pull him closer to see. "Here. She just confessed her true feelings and now he is about to take responsibility."
"Ugh…Kakashi-senpai…" Predictably, a deep blush dusts his cheeks red, and he lifts his hands to cover his face, but unexpectedly he stays put and peeks behind his fingers.
Oh? Maybe this kohai is not so boring after all.
