A/N: Just some introspective thoughts on what makes some Death Eaters choose their path.
1.
For Bellatrix, it was love. Not because she loved her family, or her friends, or purebloods. But because the first time her parents introduced her to the Dark Lord as a young girl, she fell in love. With his power, with his vision, with his hate. She knew she would do whatever he asked, follow him to ends of the earth. For love.
2.
But for Narcissa it is simply because she is dutiful. To her parents, her sister, her husband. So when her spouse tells her to join him for a Death Eater meeting and her parents nod in approval, she simply does as she is told.
3.
Sometimes there is nowhere else to go. Fenrir, once so popular in school, once so boyish and loved, now bears the beast's mark across his face in ragged scars.
His family shuns him. He cannot find work. But the Death Eaters welcome him with open arms. They embrace his darkness that is now so apparent in him.
And he feels accepted.
4.
Sirius was meant to be the golden child, the heir to the noble and ancient House of Black. But his Gryffindor tie and his Gryffindor friends declare him nothing more than a black sheep.
So Regulus is, for once, the center of his parent's attention.
And he adores it, loves it, soaks it up. He wants to be a good son. So he comes home grinning at the new mark inked on his arm, reveling in the proud smiles of his parents.
5.
Rodolphus joins for love, too. But, unlike his wife, he loves his spouse. Loves Bellatrix fiercely, in all her dark glory. So even though he knows she does not love him, he follows her, ignores the glow in her eyes when she looks at the Dark Lord, and pretends he loves him, too.
6.
Lucius has one single thought on his mind: power.
The Dark Lord will make him powerful, feared, strong. And those are the only things that he has ever wanted.
7.
Draco, too, has only one thought on his mind: survival.
He is afraid.
He wants to speak his mind, say no, but he is not stupid. He knows what will happen if he does. He is so, so frightened and he is just a boy, and he doesn't want to die.
8.
There is another who joins from fear. But Peter's fear is a timid, trembling thing. It is ratty and tiny and festering. He is afraid his friends do not notice him.
So he makes them notice.
9.
He is lonely, so, so lonely, watching Lily with James, watching her have a child and start a family that is not with him.
He hates it, wants it to go away, wants to forget, wants to die, wants to be far, far away from Gryffindors and their bleeding hearts.
The Dark Lord is the farthest place away he can think of.
