Chapter 1: No way
Satan City 7pm
Pan sighed as she walked down her usual path towards her college dorm. It was another boring lecture where the professor reads every bullet point on his power point and leaves little room for enjoyment. She felt the whole weight of her class on her shoulders, yet her backpack only carried a notebook and pencil inside. Had work been more exciting, she might not have been so tired, but here she was: walking down the same street, passing by the same people.
She wore an orange headband with a red jacket, white shirt, and some black jeans with white shoes. She liked to dress simple, especially on her full days where she worked and had class. Her backpack was black with cute, green kitten eyes on the flap. Her black hair was cut shoulder length with side bangs. She was definitely comfortable.
She looked up at the night sky and smiled to herself. The stars were barely visible due to the bright lights of the city, but she knew they were there. The few twinkles here and there were enough to tell her so. Her dream was to one day explore outside this planet and visit countless of others just like her father and grandfather once did. She smiled again, feeling her eyes go heavy for a bit, remembering her childhood when her father and grandfather would recount their glory days. They were her bedtime stories ever since she was a baby and showed interest in the life of battle… or so they claimed.
Battle after battle they would tell her every night. Every night, a new fight would get told. After they were all told, they would start over and tell her again. As a child, she loved it! She would beg them in her little, pink pajamas to tell her more, only for them to say, "another night."
Pan yawned into her hand, shook her head, and looked forward once more, now waiting to cross the street at the light's command. She was growing more and more tired, but she was almost there. She kept everyone in her peripheral; there were teenagers on their phones, husbands with suitcases rushing to get home, and a few college students with heavy backpacks over their shoulders. The light then turned white with a symbol of a crossing figure.
As she crossed the street, Pan couldn't help but think back to her all-time favorite story: about the man who left his future to save theirs. It was a tale about a man with blue hair and blue eyes who supposedly came from the future and had warned them all about these dangerous androids. He favored the sword, despite his incredible strength and powers. He single-handedly defeated Frieza! He helped defeat Cell! Pan had always loved that story, mainly because she was 8 at the time and was starting to develop boy crushes. She couldn't help but fall in love with his character. He was her knight with blue hair.
A man honked at another car, bringing Pan back to reality. She shook her head in disbelief. That was ages ago, she thought to herself. Now that she was 20, Pan no longer cared for those stories. They were simply bedtime stories that her family went through. She never got to experience any of it, so it no longer mattered to her as she got older. Her parents were hesitant to train her properly, her grandfather had taken off to train another child, and her other grandfather was too busy to train her. Eventually, she gave up and decided to pursue a different dream.
Her first goal was to visit Planet Namek. Lately, they have been in great need of aid, and she wanted to help a good cause. From there, she wanted to travel to any nearby planets who also needed help. It was her ultimate goal. To get there, she would have to work for the biggest technological company on Earth: Capsule Corp. Granted, the Great Bulma had already offered her a paid internship there, but Pan refused it. She didn't want any handouts; she wanted to earn this. Therefore, Bulma agreed to treat her like any other candidate. She would have to have amazing college grades to even have a shot for a nonpaid internship. She would do it though.
Pan felt her phone vibrate. She reached into her pocket, turned it on, and saw that it was just a notification that her battery was dying. 15%. Pan sighed, closing her phone and her eyes. She hasn't been home all day so of course her phone was almost dead. She was almost home though. She just needed two more blocks…
As she put her phone into her back pocket, a man with blue hair and blue eyes, wearing a long, black trench coat walked past her in the opposite direction and caught her eye… Pan felt her heart skip a beat. She stopped walking and stood still. All noise cease to exist in her mind. Car engines were muffled, people's voices were nonexistent. But the man continued walking on. Pan was dumbfounded. No way, she thought. She felt time around her go in slow motion as that moment replayed in her head over and over. Blue hair…Blue eyes… She immediately turned around to see this man once more, but he was gone.
The streets became audibly busy again. Pan blinked repeatedly. He was gone. She tried looking through the crowds, searching for that blue hair. No way, she told herself once more. Pan, realizing that people were now staring at her, turned around and continued towards her dorm, now embarrassed to have a caused a small scene. She tried reassuring herself as she took herself home. There is no way it was him… There is no way… Surely she was just so tired that she imagined him…
Trunks sighed as he stared at the giant city ahead of him. Satan City was very bright and colorful, unlike anything he has ever seen before. The tall buildings, the crowded streets, the noisy cars… Taking another moment to capture the scenery, Trunks packed up his time machine and placed it into a capsule, where he then stored it in its protective case. After tucking away the case in his coat pocket, he started flying towards the city.
It was definitely a nice, cool night. He was right to pack a coat. His mother would be all over him, claiming how she was right. He smiled as he already missed her. He missed his people already too. But they were the reason he was here. After defeating the androids, Trunks took it upon himself to restore Earth back to how it was before, which proved to be much more difficult than he had thought. Fortunately, his mother had been working on home capsules that provided just enough shelter for everyone, which was also not a whole lot… Trunks sighed as the memory hit him.
After 2 years of rebuilding, everything was in a steady place. The people came together to surprise Trunks. His mother walked towards him with a protective case that held multiple capsules. She wrapped his fingers around the case and then told him, "You deserve a vacation, son. Go for it. We'll be okay." Trunks was completely opposed to this, but everyone insisted. They refused to let him say otherwise. "Go visit your friends. Bring us supplies if you need a reason to go, but just go." His mother was right. They did need supplies to even the odds here. Trunks agreed. He made sure everything was good to go one last time before heading out the next morning.
Trunks was wearing a long sleeve, green shirt with a black trench coat over it. He had black jeans and black boots. His hair was freshly cut too. As he entered his time machine, he realized something. It's only been 2 years since the androids, Cell, and the death of Goku. Everyone would still be adjusting to that life. He couldn't bring himself to show up again. It was too soon… He then realized what he had just said. Too soon? There was no such thing when he was sitting in a literal time machine! Trunks decided he would travel to a different present, a present where life was completely different from his. He wanted to see how everything had played out. He wanted to know that he was able to save Earth's future. An Earth that could have been…
With a smile on his face full of determination, Trunks waved goodbye to his mother and pressed launch. He then took off and blipped away, where he then landed in a mountain side near Satan City. It took a little adjusting after time traveling, however. Trunks could feel his stomach wanting to fail him, but he stayed strong. He started navigating towards Satan City, hoping to find something great… and he did.
Trunks was in complete awe as he approached the city. Back home, this place was a complete disaster. They even had to abandon it once every valuable part was taken. And that wasn't much. Once he was near the city, he flew closer to the ground and landed. He then walked the rest of the way inside. As he entered the city, he was flabbergasted. This was a whole new world to him entirely. There were tall buildings, all filled with light, unbroken pavement, people walking along without a care in the world. Trunks put his hands in his pocket and walked forward. He could hear people chattering, music playing, a car honking at another car. He saw working cars being held down by traffic! His world didn't even have enough people to cause traffic. This felt great!
As he continued to walk by, he felt his stomach grumble. Despite his breakfast trying to come back up, he felt hungry. He had left in the morning and arrived at night. Another grumble was felt… yeah he was definitely hungry. He couldn't wait to try out a restaurant here though! Without a care in the world for the first time ever, Trunks let out a deep breath. He watched as everyone strolled past him, random people he had never met… right? Trunks let his nose guide him to the nearest restaurant, and it served him well. It was only a few buildings down, and he couldn't wait!
As he happily walked over, Trunks felt a cold sensation at the back of his neck, chills down his spine. A young woman, no older than him, walked past him. It was a brief moment, but he could have sworn he felt a faint Ki spike up and immediately hide away again. That Ki felt familiar too, but he could not make it out… Trunks's stomach grumbled once more, making him shake his head and continue his walk. He was too hungry for this. He was on vacation after all...
