Hi everyone! This is my first anime fanfic so I'm nervous but excited too to get this going! My OC is named Kaiya Ayumi, she's sixteen, 5 ft 8 with pitch black hair with red highlights and piercing green eyes. I won't explain her quirk just yet, we'll see if you can figure it out through the first couple of chapters. Also, I removed Harakure from BNHA to make room for my character; also I never understood why she was in the series anyway. R&R please (:
Chapter 1:
The principal's office was a foreign place for Kaiya; she had tried to stay out of trouble as much as she could throughout her junior high years so as not to bring attention to herself. She didn't care for the spotlight; never had, which was strange because she wanted to be a hero. In her current situation however, she was not sitting in Principal Nezu's class for behavioural issues; the year hadn't even started at UA yet. He had requested to meet her before school started for an unknown reason; but she could guess as to the nature of the conversation. The room was cold and plain while the small creature sitting in front of her just smiled while they waited for Kaiya's homeroom teacher to show up. "May I offer you some tea while we wait, Ms. Ayumi?
"No, thank you Principal Nezu, and if you don't mind; can you call me by my first name?" She asked, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear nervously. Nezu opened Kaiya's file in front of him in search of her first name and nodded.
"Of course...Kaiya. Mr. Aizawa will be with us shortly." As soon as he finished his sentence, the door was pushed open and a man with long, black hair appeared. Kaiya felt an air of familiarity around the man as he sat beside silently, rubbing his tired eyes. "Mr. Aizawa, this is Kaiya Ayumi, she'll be in your homeroom class this semester." The man regarded the student silently, causing her to shift in her seat nervously under his lazy stare.
"I'm sure you are aware that we know of your situation Kaiya?" Aizawa finally spoke; his voice as tired as his demeanor. She tensed and started fiddling with the silver ring on her thumb while Aizawa gauged her reaction. "You've kept your situation well hidden over the years; but a teacher from your junior high filled us in." He continued, unconcerned about his students' uncomfortableness.
"I thought as much. He was the reason I even got into this school." She mumbled, slouching in her seat slightly.
"We will not ask for more information, but we just want you to know that you are safe here and we have people like Mr. Aizawa that will keep an eye on you if necessary." Principal Nezu explained with a smile on his face. Kaiya still felt uncomfortable at the offer but nodded her head in understanding. "You are not alone."
"This won't be public knowledge will it? Like my classmates won't know anything about me?" She asked and Nezu shook his head as Aizawa narrowed his eyes at the question.
"They will only know what you tell them. These kids are going to be your allies though. Being honest with them may be the best thing you can do."
"With all due respect sir, I've been told this before. Making friends, trusting people, letting people in? It's not my forte. I'm going to try though of course. A hero can't do it alone; like you said...we need allies."
"Let me be clear, I am not going to act as your guardian, or give you any kind of special treatment Kaiya. You will be treated as every other student in my class." Aizawa told her, rubbing his eyes.
"I appreciate that. I don't want to be treated differently; that's why I have kept my situation under wraps. I just want to work hard and become a hero. It's simple." She said, earning a grunt from Aizawa and a clap from Nezu.
"Great, now that that is settled, welcome to UA Kaiya." Nezu cheered. She left the room and decided to make her way back to the place she called home, leaving the two adults to converse with each other.
"I don't understand why you had to rope me into knowing about this girls' situation? There's lots of kids out there that are without parents." Aizawa groaned at his boss once Kaiya left. The smiling creature shuffled back into his chair once Kaiya was gone and pushed her file towards Aizawa.
"It's more than just her lack of parents. She's never had a concrete living situation or anyone close to her. She's a perfect picking for villains if they catch wind of her. And with her Quirk in the wrong hands; I fear bad things could happen." Nezu explained, flipping through the pages.
"A lot of students have powerful Quirks with bad backgrounds; why is she so special?" Aizawa asked, rubbing his eyes in annoyance as he looked over the paperwork; then froze when he realized why Kaiya was important.
"Because I know of her parents and what happened to them. We must protect her from her past so that she can have a successful future, unlike them."
"Does she know what happened to them?" Aizawa asked, curious as to the new information.
"All I know is, they got wrapped in with the wrong people and made mistakes. They paid for them dearly. I don't think she knows about their fate; I think she just believes they abandoned her."
"You heard her. She doesn't make friends and trust is a hard concept for her to grasp. I don't blame her, she's probably been used and lied to her whole life trying to survive. How can we change her mind when she's gone through something like this?" Aizawa asked the principal.
A long pause split the conversation before Nezu spoke again. "This girl is special and I want the best for her; and you're going to help me. You know a little something about loss, Shouta." Nezu pointed out carefully. Aizawa froze for a moment but sighed his agreement.
"No special treatment. But, I will keep an eye on her." He sighed, leaving the room.
"Before you leave Aizawa." Nezu stopped the man. "Check her left forearm. The junior high teacher said something about her arm and how it may help explain why she is...reluctant to trust." Aizawa nodded his head and left the office, his mind spinning from the news of his student.
A few weeks later, the first semester of UA began. Kaiya always detested the first day of school as she didn't care for meeting new people; she liked to keep her distance from people. A lingering fear always shadowed over Kaiya when people witnessed her Quirk in action. She had hoped high school would prove different; but she had learned to never keep her hopes too high.
Kaiya's eyes surveyed the homeroom classroom knowing she had her work cut out for her at this prestigious school. She knew she was lucky she got into UA on recommendations like two other students in Class 1-A thanks to a friendly teacher who saw her potential; but everyone was strong in their own right. She had to prove herself quickly if she was going to confirm any kind of future as a hero.
So many different students of sizes, shapes, and colors scattered around the room; waiting patiently for Aizawa. As Kaiya analyzed the room, a creeping suspicion lingered that someone was staring at her from the front of the room. Then she saw the purple culprit. "Can I help you?" She asked the boy with purple balls on his head.
"Just admiring the view. I can't wait to see what hero costume they designed for you." He drooled pervertedly, licking his lips. Annoyance bubbled inside her at his words but she took a deep breath and cracked a smile.
"Oh yes, I designed my hero costume for the sole purpose of invading your sexual desires. You caught me." Kaiya arched her eyebrow as the boy almost fainted. She heard a tiny scoff escape from her right sided neighbor. "Anything to add?" She asked the red and white haired boy who answered her by slowly shaking his head.
"I think you broke him." The boy answered quietly, seeing the purple boy still drooling in his seat. Kaiya's eyes softened at the quieter boy and smiled shyly at him.
"I'm Kaiya." She smiled, tucking a stray black hair behind her ear.
"Todoroki." He replied, his eyes finding the front of the room again when a noise broke out.
"Get your foot off the desk right now!" An authoritative voice sounded. A taller, blue-haired boy commanded a smirking, blonde boy nearer the front of the room. "It's the first day and you're already disrespecting the school property!"
"You're kidding right? Did your old school put a school a stick up your ass or were you born with it?" The blonde boy asked, a rough tone to his voice.
The blue haired boy sighed heavily and fixed his tone. "Let's start over. I'm Tenya Iida from the Somei Private Academy and…" He got cut off by the blonde boy's scoff.
"Somei huh? You must think you're better than me. I'm going to have fun tearing you a new one."
"You'd threaten me? Your own classmate?! Are you sure you're in the right place?" Iida gasped. Kaiya found this whole interaction entertaining; especially the blonde boys' rough nature; he'd be fun to mess with. The two boys froze as a smaller, green haired boy entered the room. "It's him."
"Umm, hi! I'm Izuku Midoriya, it's super nice to meet you." He smiled, scratching his neck nervously. Iida and Midoriya continued a hush conversation about the entrance exam that she didn't care to hear about. Kaiya didn't need to do the exam as she was offered a spot here on recommendations like two other students in the class. She wondered which two were also recommended.
"It took you all eight seconds to quiet down; that's just not going to work. Time is precious, rational students would understand that." A familiar tired voice sounded from the front of the room. Kaiya's watch keeper stood in the doorway, stuffed in a yellow sleeping bag. Kaiya stifled a laugh at everyone's shocked and scared looks as their teacher unwrapped himself from his sleeping bag. "Hello, I'm Shouta Aizawa. Your teacher. Right, let's get to it. Change into your gym clothes and meet me outside, we have a quirk assessment test." He instructed lazily.
Outside, the students stood patiently waiting for Mr. Aizawa. Kaiya cursed herself as she forgot that the gym clothes would show her arms more and she subconsciously rubbed her left forearm as if to erase the discoloration. She didn't think anyone noticed, except for the two heterochromatic eyes regarding her slightly next to her.
"We're going to miss the orientation!" A smaller girl cried to their teacher whilst Kaiya rolled her eyes. The last thing she wanted to do was to sit through a pointless ceremony for hours. Thankfully, Aizawa seemed to agree with her thought process.
"Wasting your time on pointless ceremonies won't help you become a good hero. It isn't rational. Any more questions?" He asked, after hearing a resounding silence, he continued with his instructions. "Right. Here at UA, we are not tethered to traditions; which means I can run my class in any way I see fit. You've taken standard testing your whole lives; but you've never used your quirks in physical exams before." The students gasped excitedly at the teacher. "The country is still trying to pretend that we are all created equal by those with the most power, excel. It's not rational. One day, the Ministry of Education will learn."
Kaiya thought over every word Mr. Aizawa was saying and she was surprised by how much she actually agreed with him. "Too much power is dangerous when not relegated." Kaiya mumbled to herself, rubbing her arm aimlessly.
"Bakugou, you earned the most points from the entrance exam; tell me, what was your farthest throw with a softball in junior high?" Aizawa asked the blonde, spiky-haired boy in the front of the crowd.
"67 meters I think." He answered, catching the ball Aizawa tossed to him.
"Try it with your Quirk. Anything goes, just stay in the circle." Aizawa instructed, stepping off to the side. "Go on, you're wasting our time." The boy threw the softball with his explosion quirk a distance of over 705 meters, earning gasps from the students.
"All of you need to know your maximum capabilities. It's the most rational way to figure out your potential as a pro hero." Aizawa explained.
"Woah 705 meters? Are you kidding me?" The yellow-haired teen exclaimed.
"Oh this is going to be fun!" A pink girl squealed.
"Using our Quirks as much as we want?" A skinny boy with tape dispensers on his elbow cried out excitedly.
"So this looks like fun huh? You have three years here to become a hero. This will not all be fun and games. Idiots. The entrance exam is not practical for figuring out who can and will succeed. Some quirks are not practical and can sometimes cause more damage than good." The students' excitement died down as Aizawa smirked. "I will put you all through a series of tests and whoever comes in last by the end will be expelled. Simple as that." Kaiya couldn't help but notice Midoriya shaking in his boots close by.
Kaiya understood her teachers' frustrations; this had to be taken seriously if any of them were to be pro heros. They all had their strengths and potential or they wouldn't be here; but that just isn't always enough. All Aizawa was trying to do was weed out the weak early on. "Show me that there's no mistake that you're here." She knew that this wasn't directed at her; however Kaiya felt nerves creep up as Aizawa's eyes burned into the group.
"You can't send one of us home! We just got here, I mean even if it wasn't the first day of school, that's not fair!" A squeaky voiced girl piped up.
"Oh and you think natural disasters are? Or power hungry villains? Or catastrophic accidents that wipe out entire cities? The world is full of unfairness; It's a hero's job to combat that unfairness. So go beyond, Plus-Ultra Style." Aizawa explained, voicing the school's motto.
Kaiya crouched at the fifty meter dash starting line with Bakugou and Midoriya on either side of her. Bakuguo took off and explosions erupted from his palms, earning him a great time. However, Kaiya was a second behind him, using her wind Quirk to blow past the finish line. "My power has more uses here than anyone else's at this school." Kaiya heard him brag, staring at his palms. She scoffed at his ego but chose not to argue yet, she'd bring him back down to earth eventually.
With the grip strength test, Kaiya couldn't do much with her Quirk, but she was naturally strong from all the odd jobs she'd done in the past so she knew she wasn't going to be the weakest. Then the standing long jump, she used her wind to catapult her further, while she heard Bakugou growling behind her. "What? You think only your powers are multi-purpose?" She smirked, seeing him grind his teeth. She smirked and walked over to the repeated side steps test, again using her wind to easily complete the task.
The next test was the softball throw for the rest of the students. Midoriya took his place ready to throw his ball. "If Midoriya doesn't shape up soon, he'll be the one going home." Iida said beside Bakugou.
"Of course he will, he's a Quirkless loser!" Bakugou snapped.
"He has a Quirk! Didn't you hear what he did at the entrance exam?" Iida asked a confused Bakugou.
"Why wouldn't he have a Quirk?" Kaiya thought to herself.
Just as Midoriya tossed the ball, Aizawa's eyes widened and the ball landed only a few feet away from the teen. "The judges for the exam were not rational enough. Someone like you should never be allowed to enroll at this school." Aizawa growled, his hair floating around and his bandages exposed. That is when Kaiya realized who he was.
"He erased his powers?" The spiky red head next to Kaiya asked the group. "How?"
"He can cancel their powers out by looking at them, but his power ends when he blinks. He's the erasure hero, Eraser Head. He tends to be on the down low in the hero world." Kaiya explained.
"You know your heroes." The teen replied to her with a smile.
"Yeah, I didn't have much to do growing up but read the news." She blushed. "I'm Kaiya by the way."
"Ejirou Kirishima, nice to meet you." He smiled back at her as Kaiya looked back over at Aizawa and Midoriya still in the circle. "He seems to be talking a lot to Midoriya."
"Maybe he thinks the kid doesn't have what it takes. What's the point of a powerful Quirk if it ends up hurting you?" Kirishima looked at Kaiya in question as the girl explained further. "I heard he broke his body saving a student using his Quirk during the entrance exam...not very practical in a battle."
"That's intense." Kirishima replied.
"You're not ready. Were you going to break your bones again like you did at the entrance exam? Counting on someone else to save your useless body?" The teacher asked as he approached the confused student.
"No that's not what I was trying to do!" Midoriya tried, but Aizawa wrapped him in his bandages and pulled him closer to him.
"No matter your intentions, you would be a liability in battle. You have the same reckless passion and as another overzealous hero I know. But even with all that drive, you're useless if you can only throw a single punch before breaking down. Sorry, Midoriya, but with your power there is no way you can become a hero." Aizawa growled, releasing his student. Kaiya felt for the boy, not having control yet over a very powerful quirk.
"I wonder if our teacher gave him some advice?" Iida asked.
"Probably told him to start packing." Bakugou growled as Kaiya's eyes flashed red at the rudeness of the boy.
"What is your deal with him? What did he ever do to you?" Kaiya asked him, earning a glare from Bakuguo who froze at her temper. "Well, if you won't explain, shut up about it. He's your classmate, be respectful."
"Who are you to talk to me like that?" He snapped back at Kaiya.
"Someone who likes to not have her hearing impaired." She told him, placing a finger on her lips to shush him. He looked ready to explode right there but Aizawa returned to the group and told Midoriya to continue with his throw with his quirk. Red eyes burned into Kaiya while Midoriya tossed the ball and a powerful burst of energy flew out of his finger, causing it to break and the ball to disappear in the sky.
"Mr. Aizawa. I'm still standing." He managed to say to Mr. Aizawa who looked impressed. Kaiya couldn't help but be impressed herself, even though it was clear Midoriya didn't have that much control over the power.
"Whoever's next, take your spot." Aizawa mumbled, pulling out his distance tracker. Kaiya decided to step up next to throw the softball when no one budged and wound her arm up. She swirled her arm around to garner a collection of wind and tossed the ball into the air; earning her a distance of 710 meters. Once she saw the ball drop meters away, she could hear the students begin to whisper.
"Wind is her Quirk? What do you think, Mina?" Kirishima asked the pink girl standing next to him.
"Maybe she can control the weather?" Mina tried. Kaiya smirked smugly; she didn't want to give all her tricks away on the first day. She found herself standing next to Todoroki and Bakugou, the former glaring at her for beating his distance. "Wow that was awesome!" Mina squealed at her as the next student went up to throw.
"Thank you." Kaiya smiled kindly at her, a blush creeping onto her cheeks. She heard Bakugou scoff and stomp away, Kaiya giggling at his annoyance.
"I'm Mina!" She introduced herself, holding out her hand for a handshake; which Kaiya took.
"I'm Kaiya." She smiled at Mina as Bakugou grunted and stalked away from the girls, leaving Todoroki with them.
"What is it that you can do? I secrete acid which sounds gross but it's pretty cool!" Todoroki narrowed his eyes on Kaiya, hoping she'd answer the pink teen but before Kaiya could answer her, Mina was called up to throw.
After the last few tests, Kaiya only used her Quirk for the softball toss so she wasn't as worn out as she thought she would be as the class was coming to a close. The students waited for their results to be calculated so Kaiya took the time to analyze the competition around her from what she was able to witness during the tests.
Kaiya looked up at the results and smiled as she came first and saw the name that was last. Midoriya?
"And I lied, no one is going home. It was just a rational deception to make sure you gave it your all." Aizawa smiled, earning heavy sighs of relief from the underperforming students.
"You guys didn't figure that out? I'm sorry, I should have said something." Yayarouzo said as everyone sighed in relief. Kaiya shrugged her shoulders and walked back towards the school, hearing people whisper about her results as well as their own.
"Didn't she get in on recommendations like Yayorouzo and Todoroki?" She heard Mina ask the frog-like girl, Tsu, behind Kaiya. Ah, so those are the other two.
"I think so, she's pretty strong with her wind Quirk, especially with her natural speed." Tsu replied quietly.
"I didn't get the chance to hear her answer when I asked her about her Quirk earlier." Mina sighed as Kaiya walked quicker to avoid being asked again. She brushed past the owner of the pair of heterochromatic eyes that had been analyzing her the entire time. Todoroki's mind replayed through each test he watched Kaiya accomplish easily; but he could sense she was holding something back as she did each move. The discoloration on her forearm he saw earlier also piqued his interest.
Back inside, Kaiya returned to the homeroom classroom to pick up her bag when she saw Aizawa appear in the room. "Kaiya. Hang back a second." His voice sounded from the doorway. "I wanted to reiterate that I will not give special treatment to you during your time here; the other teachers have been made aware of your situation as well. They share my same mindsight." He explained tiredly.
"I know Mr. Aizawa." She said, shuffling her feet shyly. He took that moment when Kaiya's eyes found the floor to gaze over her left forearm like Nezu had advised him to. He saw the purple and red burn wrapped around her forearm, roughly the size of a hand print. He cleared his throat and rubbed his neck roughly as he spoke again.
"That being said; you did well today. You definitely earned your placement here." He smirked, brushing his hand from his neck over to his rough chin. "I think you'll do fine here. If you need anything, please don't be afraid to ask me." His eyes were tired, but there was kindness within them as Kaiya nodded at him.
"I appreciate that sir. Careful now, you may ruin your reputation for being a hard teacher." Kaiya smiled. He snorted and dismissed her before she could sass him anymore. "Oh before you go, one tip." Kaiya turned back to her teacher. "People will eventually see that burn of yours; hiding it will only prolong the inevitable; people are naturally curious creatures." Kaiya paled as her fingers ghosted over her forearm.
"Yes sir." She whispered as she ducked out of the classroom.
Aizawa was left thinking over what Kaiya did during the assessment and the strength she possessed already with only self training. Using only a fourth of her strength, she still came in first. "I can only imagine what she can do with everything she has." He mumbled to himself as he left the room.
The rest of the school day went by pretty quick as Kaiya tried her best to concentrate in her non-hero courses. She was a good student when she was focused in junior high, but she was going through her hero class in her mind and was trying to figure out how to be better than each classmate. From the Quirk assessment test, the top 5 not including herself, were her competition. Todoroki, Yayorouzo, Bakugou, Iida, and Tokoyami. Yayorouzo had a creation Quirk but that would eventually have its limit. Tokoyami had a shadow creature that did most of the work for him, but he was smart, Kaiya could tell. Bakugou was loud and explosive like his Quirk; however, if Kaiya just annoyed him enough he would become easier to fight, she thought. Iida was fast and strong, but his boosters could be easily manipulated by a strong force. Todoroki sat a few rows away from Kaiya in this class and she narrowed her eyes at him in analysis. He was the mystery. She didn't have a chance to see his Quirk during the test, so she had to find a way to observe him more closely seeing as he came in second.
"Ms. Ayumi. A bit distracted are we on the first day of school?" Midnight interrupted her analysis of Todoroki with a tap on Kaiya's desk, causing the boy to look her way.
"Sorry ma'am." She bowed her head in embarrassment and tried to refocus on the class Midnight was teaching. Todoroki narrowed his eyes at Kaiya but turned his attention back to the chalkboard.
Once class was over, Kaiya found herself absentmindedly scratching in her notebook during lunch. She was horrible at drawing and mostly just doodled random shapes or just wrote random lines that eventually turned into a poem of some kind. She was concentrating so much she didn't hear footsteps approaching. "A bit distracted Ms. Ayumi?" A familiar voice sounded behind her. Todoroki stood with his lunch tray and sat in the empty seat in front of her.
"Very funny." Kaiya rolled her eyes but let out a chuckle as a blush crept onto her cheeks as the boy got comfortable. "Why did Ms. Midnight call you Ayumi?" He asked, slurping on his soba.
"My given name is Kaiya. I don't introduce myself with my surname." She explained, picking at a piece of roll on her tray. Todoroki arched his eyebrow at her but didn't press further. "Sorry for the confusion." Kaiya mumbled, tugging at the end of her hair gently.
"You did well on the assessment test. I don't remember you from the recommendation exam though." He said, earning a curious look from Kaiya. "What?"
"How do you know that I was one of the recommended?" She asked.
"People talk a lot here; I overheard some of the girls talking about a third student being recommended. I already knew about the creation girl and myself. The girls figured you were the third." He explained, slurping at his noodles while Kaiya blushed again.
"Yeah, I got in that way. I didn't go to a fancy junior high, but I had someone back me up from my junior high to get me in. They thought my Quirk was hero worthy." She explained. Silence dragged on for a few moments before Todoroki spoke again.
"Whoever it was must know what they're doing then. A wind Quirk isn't necessarily a strong one, but used in the right way; it can be very useful." This casual conversation was curious to Kaiya as Todoroki did not give off the impression of being friendly towards people. Kaiya had observed today other students', mostly girls, attempts at conversing with the boy in Ms. Midnight's class; but he rebuffed them. Why was he so interested in her? Before she could ask, the bell rang for their dismissal and Todoroki discarded his tray without a goodbye.
"See you later then." She mumbled to herself, pulling her bag onto her shoulder. She was walking to Present Mic's class when someone grabbed her and pulled her around a corner away from the crowds. She almost called out until she saw Bakuguo looking down at her; murderous red eyes burning into her soul. "What the hell do you want?" She snapped at him.
"You need to watch your tone with me. Earlier at the Quirks assessment test, that's one thing; but now?" He growled, his face close to Kaiya's as if to intimidate her.
Kaiya pushed him away while rolling her eyes. "Oh please. You don't scare me. Your tongue is barbed and your exterior is cold. However, I know exactly what kind of person you are. The loud, mouthy, angry boy who is really just a puppy who needs a hug." She smirked with her hands on her hips.
"I am not a puppy!" He snapped at Kaiya but she just laughed in return.
"Sure, it'll be our little secret, puppy." She winked at him as Bakuguo's face turned beet red. "You're just mad because I bet no one has ever stood up to your attitude like I did. Well get used to it, explosion boy." She smirked and brushed past him.
"Why did you stop me from talking about that Quirkless nerd?" He asked her before she got too far away, causing her to stop and look over her shoulder.
"I don't like bullies." Kaiya told him, silencing the loud boy. "No one deserves to be treated that way just because of their powers." Bakugou paled and shoved his hands into his pockets, turning down the opposite hallway of Kaiya.
The school day ended and Kaiya was nearing her job to start her shift. Once she arrived, Kaiya's boss came in to check on her when she opened the dojo. "Hi Mr. Aoyama, how are you?"
"Good, we were busy today, so lot's to clean up." He smiled, handing her a plate of noodles. "My wife made you some food."
"Oh wow, thank you. I'm starving! Today was busy for me too." Kaiya bowed and took the plate from him.
"Are you trying to make friends this year?" He asked her as she slurped on the meal.
"Yes sir, I realize that isolating myself is not a good way for me to make alliances." Kaiya replied.
"Good. I'm glad you realized that. Relationships are important in a young hero's life. In anyone's life really." Mr. Aoyama told her. "Eat up. I need to head home soon, so remember to lock this place up."
"Yes sir." She smiled, finishing her meal and handing the empty plate to him. "I'll start cleaning right away." As her boss left, Kaiya peered around the sweat-lingering room at the scattered towels and workout equipment and sighed heavily. She was going to be busy tonight before she started training before bed.
