Japan. The land of the rising sun. Home of the Yokai, a wide variety of various beings with various abilities and characteristics. One of these kinds of Yokai is the Yuki-Onna, also known as snow-women. Beautiful masters of ice and the cold.
One of, if not the, most infamous members of the Yuki-Onna was the one known only as Esdeath. What made her infamous was her unquenchable thirst for violence, sadistic personality, indomitable will and overwhelming power. But what truly made her feared was her willingness to use forbidden magic to transfer her soul into the bodies of her own children when they were old enough, keeping herself young and alive for centuries by repeating the cycle. The cycle would have repeated once again if Esdeath hadn't been betrayed by one of her most recent concubines, a fellow Yuki-Onna, who poisoned her and kidnapped the intended vessel, the cruel snow-woman's own newly born daughter, who didn't have a name at the time. Fleeing in the night, the former concubine snuck aboard a freighter ship along with the baby amongst the cargo, leaving the country of Japan behind and putting as much of a distance between the baby and her cruel mistress as possible.
When the ship reached it destination, the country of Britain, the former concubine did her best to get in contact with the Supernatural Authorities in the country and gain asylum in the country along with the baby, who she named Hail while comforting the crying baby during a hailstorm at sea, as refugees. Fortunately the two were granted asylum in the country and a supply of Frostpops, a kind of lollipop-like magical candy that cooled down the bodies of whoever sucked on them, that could last for about a few years. As both the former concubine, whose name was actually Erusa, and Hail were Yuki-Onna, they needed to keep themselves at low temperatures in order to survive. In fact, Yuki-Onna were the main buyers of Frostpops, but that didn't necessarily mean that other members of the Supernatural World occasionally bought the cold treat, particularly in very hot countries.
Erusa found a rather humble place to live with young Hail in the small village basically in the middle of nowhere in the British countryside known as Godric's Hollow, even managing to get herself a job as a waitress at the local pub. Which allowed the older snow-woman to become familiar with the various residents of the village, but not in the intimate sense of phrase, as the trauma experienced at the hands of Esdeath has made it… difficult to form bonds that weren't cardinal for Erusa, especially considering the various fetishes she was reluctantly subjected to. Erusa still had some scars in places that they shouldn't be and was relieved that she still had both of her eyes, though she would still be thankful if she only had one. Especially considering that the few of Esdeath's other concubines that were missing eyes had clawed out their own eyes as a way to escape from their misery in some manner.
She did earn a few strange looks from the various residents of Godric's Hollow, particularly because of the Frostpops she pretty much always had in her mouth and her snow white hair, which had originally been a pale pink color but the experience with Esdeath had caused it to whiten. During the day Erusa and young Hail arrived in town, the two met the residents that turned out to be their neighbors, James Potter and his wife Lily Potter, who quite memorably gushed quite a bit upon seeing little Hail in Erusa's arms. The fact that the baby was asleep while sucking on a pacifier probably had something to do with it.
