He joined their team not so long ago and he was very grateful for it. Pretty much every agent he knew would die for the opportunity to be the part of the Star Squint Squad as they younger agents called them. Their cases were legendary, the cooperation, a seemingly unlikely endeavor, was unprecedented. To Aubrey's mind, the key was that they were family, honest to goodness family, which was rare and a little bizarre, but that what it was and he was lucky enough to join this family. And in the center of this unlikely family were, of course, Dr Temperance Brennan and special agent Seeley Booth.
Their romance was a major gossip at the FBI for years, Aubrey wasn't at the beginning of it, or even in the middle, he joined the team when they were already married and had a kid together, but now and then he heard comments from his colleagues or squints or even Booth and Brennan sometimes, that made no sense. They were obviously meant to be, as a cheesy movie would put it, but they would also bicker to the end of days, disagree on pretty much anything, from religion to hockey games, but at the same time they were inseparable, there was infinite trust and undeniable love between them, the definition of a power couple as Sweets called them in his book. Aubrey wondered if he ever will find something like that in his own life, maybe Jessica would be able to become that for him one day.
He saw how they fought for each other during the difficult times, especially after Dr Sweets passing and Booth's relapse into gambling, despite highly traumatic events, not once did he think they will break up, it was simply not possible and in the end Aubrey was right. He heard some stories about difficult cases where Booth or Brennan got in between, were kidnapped or injured or threatened and each time, whoever he heard this story from, said that the criminals were stupid enough to get in between them. Sooner or later, they always found a way to each other.
As special and unstoppable as they clearly were, they were also ridiculous sometimes. Dr Brennan was famous to be blunt and a bit awkward and that alone brought some color to the investigations, but Booth, especially if it was come kind of small, domestic competition between him and his wife, was equally ludicrous. And right now, after they closed this jewelry case, he was in Booth's office trying to pretend to be an office plant, while Booth and Brennan were bickering about Booth's dorky glasses.
'Booth, there is nothing to be ashamed of! Your vision has nothing to do with your work abilities, let alone with your manliness!'
'Really? Do you really want to discuss it in front of Aubrey?'
'I am not here,' said Aubrey. 'I am just an innocent person, trying to finish the paperwork.'
'You were the one who wouldn't keep your mouth shut, Aubrey!'
'Booth, even if he didn't tell me, I would still know you went to an eye doctor!'
'And how could you possibly know that?'
'Because, you and I know each other for twelve years and I know how you behave in situations like that!'
'You know, you know way too much!'
'Of course, I do, I am brilliant! And I am your wife.'
'You know, Bones, sometimes I miss the times you when you didn't know all my little secrets,' Booth's tone changed from challenging to almost intimate and Aubrey felt uneasy. One thing was to see them bicker, but this thing they do, when they solely focus on each other, was something he usually tries to escape from, it was their unique way of communication and Aubrey always felt that it was something extremely private.
'And why is that, Booth?' asked Brennan in a low voice and Aubrey coughed a little to make his presence known, but naturally, they completely ignored him.
'Well, you remember how it was when we first met, the glance across the room, that old black magic when you meet your soulmate for the very first time and learn all those little secrets, it was fun, wasn't it?'
'I told you, there is no such as soulmates, Booth, what we are is called symbiotic. Which is extremely rare and wonderful, I must admit, but there is no magic in it, because it doesn't exist.'
'What you call symbiotic, I call soulmates, Bones, but it's still there,' he grinned at her and took her hand.
'We do have a different definition for the same thing, yes,' Brennan's voice was almost a whisper. Aubrey had enough of it, they were clearly one second away from making out and he really didn't want to see that, it would be like peeking at his parents, yuck!
'All right, you two, break it off! Get a room or something.'
The moment was broken and Booth and Brennan were snapped back to reality, they looked around as if just noticing him.
'Aubrey, what are you still doing here?'
'I am finishing the paperwork, which what you should be doing instead of romancing your wife.'
'I was not…OK, you know what, it's late. Bones, let's go home, I am hungry. I will do my paperwork tomorrow.'
'Sure, but I am driving, Booth and don't forget your glasses!'
'Why would I need glasses if you are driving!'
'Just leave, for the love of God!' Aubrey rolled his own eyes. Admittedly they were adorable, but sometimes insufferable. Finally, the couple left the office and Aubrey could get back to work.
