Prologue

Ashes and Ruins

Fire. She was on fire.

She couldn't breath. Her lungs wouldn't respond in turn. She needs to get away. To get away from what, she didn't know. But she needed to. Oh god, she needs to.

Everything is burning, burning all around her. The Eiffel Tower is in ruins. Paris, her home of fifteen years, is in ruins. She is all alone. "Tikki?"

She calls, surely her kwami wouldn't abandon her now. Paris needed Ladybug. She needed to be Ladybug. For without Ladybug, Marinette was just...nothing.

Right.

"M-Marinette." Tikki's voice chokes out when she finds her, she never heard the kwami so weak before. Marinette gasps when she sees her, she is battered and bruised all over… and burned.

"W-who." She chokes out, cupping her kwami in her hand.

"Run, Marinette. Get the Guardian. Find Rena Rouge and the others. They can stop him."

"Tikki, what is going on? You're scaring me!" Tears come to Marinette's eyes, she's never felt so hopeless.

"Marinette, you have to stop, you have to stop..." She whispered, weak.

"Stop who?"

"Oh, Milady. I believe she meant me." A voice called out. It was a familiar voice, one usually filled with easy banter now sent unease through her.

Marinette choked back a gasp as she stumbled back. She took in the familiar suit, the cat ears and the bell. It was wrong. It was all so wrong.

"Kitty?"

The black suit was bleeding, no it was shifting. Shifting from the black she was familiar with to white, stark white. The bright green eyes turned ice blue.

Oh god. No.

"Hello, Milady. It's been a while." Chat Blanc purred.

Marinette screamed.

Marinette woke up, clawing at her throat. Her legs were tangled in her bedsheets and her body slick with sweat.

"Another one?" Tikki mummers quietly, nuzzling her cheek.

Marinette nods saying nothing. She chokes back a sob as she hugs herself, spasms wrecking her body.

The nightmares.

Ever since she saw that awful future of what could be a few weeks before, she'd been haunted by those eyes of her partner gone bad. She thought she'd be over it, but then the nightmares started up. Her parents knew something was off, but she told them it was nothing. How did she tell her parents of the event when they didn't even know of their daughter's double life as Paris's savior of two years? She told them nothing.

She checked the time. 500AM.

Maybe, things will be different tomorrow, Marinette thinks to herself as she falls asleep.
