"(Name), I swear, I didn't know!" Heather Night broke down sobbing.
Jacob stared at Heather pityingly, weighing the horrific discovery that Morgana Blackhawk had been kidnapping children, using Heather as an unwitting pawn to kill her sister Belinda who had confronted her about the missing children. His gut ached with anger at Morgana's cruelty and pity for Heather. As much as he knew Heather had committed a crime and needed to face the legal ramifications, he also understood the position she was in. To him, a crime was a crime, but in this case, he was willing to be lenient.
He shut his eyes and shook his head slowly, unable to look upon such a pitiful sight. "Heather," he sighed, "we believe you when you say you didn't know. Morgana hid her secrets well from you. You were nothing more than just a pawn, used so she could keep her hands clean. Still, it doesn't excuse the fact that you took a life. For now we need to take you into custody. We'll figure out what to do about you later."
Heather sniffled and dabbed at her eyes. "I understand. I'll come peacefully."
Jacob and (Name) led Heather back to the RVs. Jacob turned his head a few times to see Heather following, the tears still flowing from her eyes and losing the battle to stifle her sobs. He opened the door to the trailer where the Supernatural Investigators detained those they arrested. Heather sat down on a lone chair inside the trailer and buried her face in her eyes. Jacob closed the door and decided that locking it would be redundant as she was in no condition to escape, even if she wanted to. Even through the closed door, her sobs can be clearly heard, if slightly muffled.
"Poor kid," he muttered. "Morgana will pay for this!"
#
News of the arrest spread quickly through the RV campe like wildfire. Jacob and (Name) are in Jacob's RV where Jacob is pondering their next move when Ben entered.
"I heard you found Belinda's killer," he said. "Heather Night drowned her, but on Morgana's orders."
"For the moment we have Heather in custody," said Jacob. "But we have bigger problems to deal with. We now know that Morgana has been masterminding the kidnapping of children across the midwest." His fist tightened. "We must bring Morgana to justice and rescue those children! It will soon be midnight (Name), we haven't got time to lose! We've also need to talk to Agnes Leek about that mind protection spell. So we have quite a busy schedule ahead of us."
There was a knock on the door. Felix was waiting outside, Belinda's diary on his lap. "Chief, Hope and I have been looking through Belinda's diary for a lead, and we've learned that Belinda suspected the children were in the Candy Room. But the room was enchanted to hide its true nature, an enchantment that could only be broken or used by a witch. She was looking for a way to break that enchantment when Heather killed her."
"Let me get this straight," said Jacob. "To rescue those children, we need the help of a witch?"
"You got it chief!" said Felix.
"Well the only witch in this coven I trust is Avery, but she's been taken prisoner with the other children." Jacob folded his one arm over his chest and frowned. "Pandora is likely to be involved with Morgana's child kidnapping plot because of that drawing we found of Belinda protecting the kids from her. And Agnes, after that incident with the cursed crystal, I don't trust her. All of the other witches are far too shifty for my liking."
"Well there is one witch who isn't as shifty as the others," said Felix. "And we have her in custody!"
Jacob's eyes widened in surprise. "Are you suggesting we ask Heather to help us? You can't be serious Felix! Heather is a murderer! It's because of her why the children are in even greater danger!"
"Chief, please hear me out," said Felix. "Heather may be our only hope. She may have killed Belinda, but Morgana was the one who wanted her dead. Heather was only blindly following orders. On my way here I passed by the trailer where you have detained her, and she is still sobbing her heart out. She's clearly torn up by what she has done now that she knows what Morgana has done. We should give her a chance to atone for what she has done. (Name) is already convinced by my idea. What about you?"
Jacob scratches his beard, resting his chin upon his palm, considering Felix's suggestion. Finally, he rests his palm against his forehead, as if he felt a headache coming on.
"I hate to admit it Felix, but I think you might be right. As much as I feel Heather needs to answer for what she's done, part of me understands that she was put into a terrible position by Morgana." He furrowed his brows. "All right Felix. Since (Name) agrees with your plan, I'm willing to give it a try.
"In the meantime, we still need to ask Agnes about that mind protection spell. Since Luke has been staying with Gwen throughout this investigation, I'll send him to go talk to Agnes."
"Chief!" Priya's shouts alarmed the three. The team chemist appeared past the front of the RV and approaching the group. "Have you seen Luke? He's not with Gwen anymore!"
"What?" Jacob shouted. "He's gone? But he's supposed to be by Gwen's side!"
"For now, she's still in my cage," said Priya. "But who knows how much longer she can last."
"I doubt that there's anymore he can do for her, other than getting that mind protection spell. But if he's not here, you may have to go in his place with (Name). What do you want to do first (Name)? Do you want to go with Priya to speak with Agnes or with me and Felix to speak with Heather?"
#
As they approached the trailer where Heather has been detained, Heather's wails gradually grew louder. But when they stood before the door, they saw that it was ajar, allowing sound and light from within to escape out into the night. Opening the door, the three are greeted by the sight of Heather still seated upon the chair. At her feet on the floor is a puddle of her tears. To Jacob, it seemed impossible that someone could cry so many tears, as if an entire ocean is flowing within Heather. Two shining rivers are flowing from her glistening eyes.
But Heather isn't alone. Luke has pulled up a chair in front of her and sat down with her. One hand clutched one of her own and the other is gently patting her shoulder.
"What have I done Luke?" she sniffled. "I just don't think I can forgive, much less live with myself!"
"Shhhh," Luke gently spoke. "Heather, we'll find a way to make this right. Be strong!"
"Luke!" Jacob's puzzled shout took them both by surprise. "What are you doing in here?"
Luke frowned at their intrustion and remained seated. It was clear he had no intention of leaving her side. "Chief, have a heart! Heather never wanted to harm anybody! She just wanted to be loved and accepted! She doesn't deserve to have her life ruined! If anybody needs to suffer the consequences for what happened, it's Morgana!"
Jacob sighed. "Luke, I'm with you a hundred percent on that. But don't delude yourself into thinking that your sympathy for Heather has made you more persuasive." He and his companions stepped into the trailer (or in Felix's case, rolled up the ramp on his wheelchair.) The only sound in the trailer was Heather's sniffles. As much as she dabs at her eyes, twin rivers of tears continue to flow.
Luke pushed his own chair backward so that he is at her side. Jacob set up another chair in front of her and sat down. "Heather, I'll be honest with you. It's not looking good for you. Murder penalties in Indiana are very harsh. You're looking at a minimum of forty-five to sixty-five years, life without parole, or even death. It's a pity you took such a foolish gamble, and lost. To think you were willing to throw your whole life away all for the sake of membership into a witch's coven."
Heather's wails once more broke the silence. "You don't understand! All my life, I've been an outcast! Even more so after becoming a Wiccan. I finally had a chance to be accepted and to belong. I just...," She paused to sniffle. "...I just had to try you know. None of this would have happened if Belinda hadn't vetoed my acceptance into the coven."
"Heather," Jacob started, his blood boiled as his patience ran thin, "don't try to blame Belinda for your present situation. You have no one to blame but yourself. Morgana didn't force you to kill Belinda, you made the decision to do that yourself. You could have just refused and walked away, but no. You chose to take the risks and take a life. All you were thinking of was what you wanted!"
The look on Luke's face in his direction looks like it could curdle milk. "Chief, can't you see how upset Heather is already? You're not helping."
"He's right chief," said Felix. "Cool it!"
Jacob looked into Heather's face and saw the tears flowing as strong as ever, and she is choking back a sob. She looked even more pitiful than he had when he found Lily's body. He calmed himself and sighed as his cheeks cooled. "I'm sorry Heather," he said gently. "Did you ever take into consideration that Belinda was looking out for you? She may just have been trying to protect you. You're too good for this coven. And she was right. Look at what happened to you. Morgana manipulated you to kill Belinda by preying on your insecurities, your desire to be accepted, and the need to fit in.
"But all you've done was dig yourself down even deeper. Once your 'crime' becomes public knowledge, you'll face more ostracization in your life. Even if you make early parole or are lucky enough to get the charge reduced to manslaughter, you'll have a criminal record and the stigma will follow you everywhere you go for the rest of your life. It will be difficult if not impossible to find employment, housing, travel outside the country, or even make friends. You didn't think about that did you?""
"No," Heather sniffed. "I didn't think I'd get caught. But I should have known I was in trouble when (Name) showed up." Luke patted one of her hands gently. "But now that I know what Morgana has been doing, I'm not sure if I want to be part of this coven after all."
"You can't turn back time Heather," said Jacob. "What's done is done. But we're not here to pass judgment on you for what you've done. Nor are we going to judge you for who or what you are. You received plenty of that treatment in Parkford. We're here to open a window of opportunity to save yourself while you can. But first, we need your help!"
"My help?" Heather's eyelids peel back, exposing whites that have started to turn bloodshot from crying so much. "What do you need my help for? And for what?"
"Heather, Belinda was searching for the missing children at the time of her death. Inadvertantly, you put them in greater danger when you killed Belinda. I know you show sincere remorse for what you have done and I know you don't want anymore blood on your hands. We have until midnight to rescue the children before they become the main course at tonight's feast."
He paused at the sight of Heather's horrified face at the thought of the children being cannibalized at the feast. And that she could have partaked in this dish. She covered her mouth as if she was about to vomit.
"It may be too late for Belinda or for regrets. But it's not too late to atone. It was thanks to you that we were able uncover the full extent of Morgana's plot. Now we need you to foil it. Think of it as a chance to redeem yourself and finish what she started. Help us rescue the childen and bring Morgana to justice. In return, we will grant you your freedom and keep quiet to the authorities about your crime."
Heather clasps her hands tightly and clenches her teeth. She had the look of desperation in the face of impossible odds and a slim hope. "I've got nothing to lose at this point! I'll do what I can to help you find those children!"
Jacob smiled for the first time in her presence that night. "Somehow, I knew you'd say that. I'll let Felix explain the details."
Felix rolled up closer in his wheelchair. "According to Belinda's diary, she believed the children were kept captive in the Candy Room. An enchantment had been cast over the room and she was looking for a way to break the spell. Only a witch can break the enchantment. That's where you come in Heather Night."
"I know what room you're referring to," said Heather. "I was only in there once...," she paused uneasily to wipe at her damp eyes again, "...disposing of evidence of my crime."
"Heather," Luke gently patted her shoulder, "don't think about what you've done. Think about what you can do now to help us."
"Okay," Heather sniffled. "One several occassions, I had overheard Morgana and Pandora speaking an incantation in that room. So when I was disposing of evidence, my curiosity got the best of me and I incited the incantation. You can only imagine my surprise when a trapdoor appeared out of nowhere."
"A trapdoor?" asked Felix.
"But it was locked! It needed a password to open. I was scared of what Morgana would do if she found out what I was up to, so I incited the incantation again to hide evidence of my discovery."
"Do you realize what you've done?" asked Felix, who was as giddy as a child on Christmas morning. "You may have discovered where the children are being held! I knew you were the right person for the job! And as for the password, we found one recorded in Belinda's diary. There's only one way to find out what it's for. Are you ready to redeem yourself, be a hero, and bring down Morgana?"
Heather sniffled one last time as her lips twisted into their first frown since her arrest. "Yes. I'm ready."
"Then come with us Heather," said Felix. "To the Candy Room!"
"You haven't got a moment to lose," said Jacob. "Midnight is drawing near."
#
(Name), Felix, and Heather entered the Candy Room, while Luke remained outside the door, warily watching for Morgana and Pandora. There is no telling if the coven is aware of Heather's arrest. If they had come for any other purpose, they would have started stuffing themselves with candy like Hansel and Gretal.
"Okay Heather," said Felix, "work whatever magic you have."
Heather scratched at the back of her neck. "Well, I'm still new at this. I'm still learning to harness my powers. But here goes nothing!"
She cleared her throat and inhaled a deep breath. "Hiden Goseke!"
From out of nowhere, a trapdoor shimmered into view on the floor beneath the feet of (Name).
"Whoa (Name)!" Felix exclaimed out excitedly. "A trapdoor! Just like Heather said!"
Heather's eyes started to glisten again as if another dam is about to burst within, releasing another flood of tears. "But it's locked! Just like I said! We can't have come all this way for nothing!"
"Have no fear Heather!" said Felix. "(Name) is a master at opening locks! Stand back and watch some magic of our own!"
(Name) quickly made work of the lock in a matter of less than ten seconds using the password from Belinda's diary. Heather breathed a sigh of relief as the trapdoor opened, revealing the children underneath, including Avery Mitchell, Felix's friend.
"(Name) You found us!" one of the boys cried out in happiness as the children climb up the safety.
"Don't just thank (Name) kids," said Felix. "Much of the credit goes to Heather. If not for her, we never would have found you!"
"Thank you Heather!" the children say in unison.
"Hey, why is she so sad?" one of the girls asked.
The tears flowing down from Heather's eyes are more of relief than sadness. "It's complicated," she said. "I'm glad you're all safe."
"I'm so sorry for running away Felix!" Avery said. "I - "
"Don't sweat it, kid," said Felix with a smile. "I'm just happy to see you again. We need to get you guys outta here. And I'll have to check you all over for any hexes or the like in my lab!"
"We'd better hurry before Morgana comes!" said Heather.
#
By the time Felix is done with the children, Priya and Agnes are working on the mind protection spell. (Name) had gone with Priya to speak to Agnes, gotten the mushrooms, leaving Priya to prepare the concoction with Agnes.
The children are safe from any hexes. As part of the spell to strip Morgana of her powers, they each recite a happy memory from their past.
"What about you Heather?" asked Felix. "Since you've been manipulated by Morgana, do you want to participate in this spell? What is your most precious memory?"
"My happy memories are few and in between," said Heather, sadly looking down at the floor.
"Can you think of something that happened recently?" asked Felix.
Heather looked up at Luke to see her gazing at her with a smile. She smiled back, grateful fof his emotional support. "Yes. Back in Parkford after the golem was deactivated, Luke came back to the cafe as I was about to finish up my shift. He asked me out on a date after work. We really hit it off. But since he wasn't staying in town much longer, we decided to keep in touch as friends, so we exchanged phone numbers."
Felix nodded and cast the spell. It was done. If he had done it right, invisible forces would have stripped Morgana of her power.
"That should do it," he said. "Morgana should be totally powerless! Now, the chief has ordered us to arrest Morgana, so let's go get her!"
"I'm coming to confront Morgana with you (Name)!" said Avery, her face contorted with righteous anger. "That meanie pants owes me an apology!"
"You should come with us too Heather," said Felix. "You might not get another chance."
"I wouldn't miss it for the world!" Heather agreed.
#
They didn't have to look very far for Morgana in the castle. The clock was about to strike midnight and Morgana was completely unaware of everything that had happened.
"What now (Name)?" Morgana demanded. Her face became white as a sheet when she saw Avery. Heather is still hiding in the shadows to reveal herself at the right time. "Avery! You...you're here!"
"Where else would I be?" Avery snarled. "Oh, right. Locked up waiting to be served on a platter for Walpurgis Night!"
Confronted by the evidence, Morgana had no choice but to confess everything. As Jacob suspected, she confirmed Pandora's involvement. The children's flesh would have increased their powers. Belinda had confronted Morgana after discovering what she was up to.
"And that's when you ordered me to kill her!" Heather stepped out of the darkness and into the moonlight to confront Morgana. For the first time in the time the team had known her, her face wore a mask of fury.
"Heather! You're here too?" Morgana looked as if she was about to have a heart attack. Her face hardened as it became a shade of red. "If that's the case, you must have gotten caught. You were a pretty sloppy killer!"
"You should have chosen another pawn!" Felix said through clenched teeth. "Thanks to Heather, the children have been rescued! You're not consuming anybody tonight! Not now, not ever!"
Morgana's eyes narrow to slits. "So you're against me too Heather? Your treachery in joining the hunters and aiding them cannot go unpunished. The deal's off! I will not override Belinda's vote. As long as I am leader, this coven will never welcome you!"
"You know what? Fine!" Heather screamed as livid tears begin to flow down her crimson face. "I don't care! I don't want to be part of any coven with someone like you in charge!"
Morgana only smiled in mocking contempt. "Well good luck trying to find another coven that will accept you after what you've done! And as for you (Name), you may have solved the mystery, but it will do you no good when I wipe your memories away." She waved her wand and incited the incantation. But nothing happened. She had been stripped of her powers.
"Nice try," said Avery, "but Felix here has stripped you of your powers! You'll never use magic to hurt anyone again!"
The color once more drained from Morgana's face as this realization hits home. In a sudden fit of rage, she snapped her wand in half. The sound was barely heard over her furious roar.
"Cuff her (Name)!" said Felix. "I'll leave Avery and Heather to take her before the coven to inform them of Morgana's crimes. I'm off to my RV to strip Pandora of her powers. We'll meet you girls back at the RV."
