Shermer High School

Shermer, Illinois, 60062

Dear Mr. Vernon,

We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong, what we did was wrong. But we think you're crazy to make us write this essay telling you who we think we are. Who do you care? You see us as you want to see us. In the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions, you see us as; a brain, a free spirit, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, a free spirit and a criminal. Correct? That's the way we saw each other at 7 o'clock this morning. We were brainwashed…

A whole Saturday. That's what I get for standing up for myself. What a waste of time. Well, at least I have my notebook.

I look out the window and sigh as I watch the houses and trees pass by, singing under my breath while my "cousin" was singing loudly next to me. He's not even my cousin but he acts like my older brother and to be totally honest, he is my brother in anything but blood. I laughed out loud.

"Come on dude, I already have to go to detention for the whole day ! I think I'm already punished enough!"

He laughed and mock glared at me.

"Excuse you, I have a great singing voice!"

"Yeah, I do believe the great people of New-York would agree with you since I think they can actually hear you." I answered, annoyed.

"Don't be so snarky G." He answered, a huge smile plastered on his face "This is great music and we both know it."

"Sure, we do." I said as I rolled my eyes, smiling slightly.

He snorted and pulled over in front of the school just as a snobbish-looking redhead girl was getting out of an expensive looking car.

"How can it be legal to lock some kids in a school on a Saturday?" I asked dramatically "We are in America, so much for being a country of freedom and free will."

Anthony chuckled and unbuckled his seat before turning to me, a serious look on his face.

"I know you're supposed to stay the whole day but if anything, …" He began.

"No."

"You will call me. Am I making myself clear?" He asked with a no-nonsense tone.

I sighed and nodded reluctantly, knowing I wouldn't call him. He smiled and said:

"So, as a former usual of the detention room at my old school…"

"I ask this question at least once a week but maybe this time you will answer: how did you even manage to go to college ?"

He ignored me and kept on looking straight in my eyes.

"Here's some pointers, let's call this: "Detention 101"."

"Come on Anthony!" I whined

"I'm serious socky!"

I rolled my eyes and sighed. He calls me socky because I don't like to wear shoes but I'm always cold, so I always have socks on.

"OK, so, advice number one: keep your head down. I mean it. I know you probably won't like how the professor looks down at you and I love that you actually don't like it but don't answer. Got it?" I nodded quietly and he smiled slightly. "Advice number 2: Don't talk to the shit stirrer, there's always one. Sure way to buy yourself another detention."

"Gee, you just rocked my world."

"Be serious dumbass!" He said forcefully but with a tone of amusement "It's war inside! Believe me the second detention is way harder than the first."

"And you know this because?"

"Get out of my sight, brat!"

I laughed before frowning.

"What is it?"

"Are the parents actually mad?"

"You want the real answer or the one the padres will tell you?"

"Both."

He sighed and buckled up as I got out of the car.

"Even though he will never admit it to you, he's proud of you and of what you did." I smiled at him, he smiled back and winked. "Have fun, brat, I'll come fetch you after my meeting alright?"

"Yeah"

He waved and drove away. I sighed and clinched my fist. Not now. Not now. Not now. I released a breath. Good.

I turned and saw Brian in a car with his mother, I smirked and walked towards it. Brown leather notebook in one hand, black backpack in the other. When I got to the car, I opened the door on Brian's side.

"Hi Mrs. Johnson, how is it going?" I asked with sickly sweet smile.

She glared at me making me smile even more. I saw Brian giving me a frightful look, I winked at me to make him relax.

"You got detention too Miss Dubois? Is your father aware of it?" His mother asked me snidely

"Oh, he sure is Mrs. Johnson. And I would love to tell you all the things he told me but… I don't want to." I tuned her protests out and turned to her son "You ready nerd?"

He nodded while blushing and got out of the car.

"STUDY!" his mother yelled after him.

I waved sarcastically and laughed as she glared at me while passing by.

"You do know she hates you right?"

"Right back at her nerd."

He laughed and I smiled at him.

Brian has been my friend since I moved here three years ago, he basically is my only real friend in this school. He's the only one outside of my family with who I can actually be myself. His mother never liked me. At first, she thought I would be a great asset to Brian. I mean, my father could help him greatly with his career, but she saw how I talked, how I looked, how I thought, how I laughed, my weight but most importantly, how I dressed. For example, today, she saw my grey jacket, my white tank top, my black short, my black knee-high socks and black boots. Not really lady like. No, I'm not exactly like the rest of my family. I like it. She doesn't. I am apparently "a bad influence" on his "perfect" son. She's not wrong. But hey, she doesn't need to know that.

We began to walk towards the library. Once there, I saw there was already two persons in there, the snobbish redhead and some guy wearing a letterman jacket. I looked over at Brian and he pointed at a table behind the two. I shrugged at him and led the way to the table without a second look towards the other two. Me on the right, him on the left. I put my notebook on the table and put the pen that was holding my long hair in a bun in my boot. I twirled my blonde hair behind my back to get them out of my face, took a book out of my bag, opened it and began to read. I was not going to let Vernon bore me to death.

I was so lost in my book I didn't notice someone walking in until I felt Brian rise next to me. I looked up and saw a really good-looking guy. I saw Brian sitting at the table next to what used to be ours. I looked back at the guy; he made a gesture with his hand telling me to move. I simply raised an eyebrow and went back to my book. I must have dreamed because I think I heard him chuckle before he sat down where Brian used to be, I made to leave but he grabbed my hand, so I sat back down. He smirked at me, I rolled my eyes and looked at Brian who mouthed "sorry". I shrugged. Eight hours next to this man? Could be much worse.

Another girl I didn't recognize entered the room and sat quickly in the back. I followed her with my eyes. She looked… I don't know, angry, resigned? She intrigued me. It seems to me like she wants to be as far away from people as possible.

There was a silence before Vernon came in. I hid my notebook along with my book quickly earning a raised eyebrow from eye-candy next to me.

"Well, well… Here we are." I already knew this was going to be a long day!"

Well guys, hope you liked the first chapter. I'll post the next one next week

Bye guys!
