A few author notes:
When I was younger, Fruits Basket was my favorite anime and manga. I moved on from it years ago to things like Skip Beat and Glee but have recently started to read it again. Right now, this is based on the manga whilst I am catching up to the 2019 anime.
This was inspired by my stumbling upon an RP with a girl named Assassined Angel that I had forgotten about whilst cleaning out my hard drive. The actual RP was from fifteen years ago but such a huge inspiration for me to write again. I did not keep in contact with her and she kind of ended my friendship with her nearly fifteen years ago on my birthday.
Haru and Rin are my favorite couple and also my favorite part of Fruits Basket
I am not focusing on Fruits Basket Another. I think that sequel manga has a lot of good stud and potential but I'm not focusing on it.
Thank you for checking this fic out. I hope you enjoy.
Opening Up The Curse
Chapter One
1.1
It had been six years since the breaking of the curse, well it had been six years since both Yuki and Kyo had left to begin their new lives and the other Somas had found things for themselves. That meant it had been five and a half years since Rin had been taken to a scenic mountain and turned around to find a white-and-black-haired high school student present to her an engagement ring along with a proposal. It had been five years since they had made it public. It was four years since he had said that he loved her unconditionally and would marry her as many times as he was able to. It was then that she had told him that she loved him in front of everybody and become his wife. It was three years since they had found a better home away from the Soma estate – she had enough from her money she made as a model. As much as she hated acting and being stared at, it paid a decent amount and she was good at it – and it had been two years since Hatsuharu Sohma had opened the restaurant Isuzu. Rin sometimes wish he had gone with his second-choice 'Lost and Found' but he had told her that Isuzu was the most beautiful word he had ever heard and she hated denying him anything. That was the problem with kind people. You had trouble denying them what they wanted even if that meant naming a restaurant after you.
She had seen it happen even though Haru hadn't admitted it. After Tohru Honda – now Tohru Soma – had left, she had been a bit depressed and the anger at Akito hadn't left. She had found that she wasn't hungry but she hadn't realized that she wasn't eating until Haru started making her lunches. There was always a jelly component but it all tasted delicious to her. Haru sometimes made too much and she had suggested that he take some to the other Soma's inside the gates. That excitable rabbit had encouraged him to do so. His cooking had caught the notice of someone who knew of a culinary school and that had led to the restaurant, a restaurant which had amazing popularity because of the good-hearted but air-headed chef and the quality of his food.
A successful restaurant meant a happy Haru and more money for them. Rin didn't really care about that second part as much as the first part. She loved seeing him smile. She loved hearing him talk about new dishes. She loved that he was finally getting the love and admiration he deserved.
So when Rin had finished a modelling shoot early, she came into the restaurant and saw the twenty three year old behind the counter. She ignored the host greeting her and waited at the teppanyaki counter. She saw Haru come out, not noticing her first of all.
"Hello, ma'am, I'll be with you shortly," he told her but Rin reached forward and held onto his hand, tapping her ring finger on top of his. "Welcome, Isu," he smiled to her as she could finally look into his gorgeous eyes.
"Welcome," she laughed as he smiled to her. "How's my hard working husband doing?" she asked before glaring at the people staring at them. Haru's white form – his primary form – was always nice to people, always charming, always giving whilst she knew she was a hardcore bit.
"I think people like the food today," he smiled. "Did you want to eat?"
"You should know I only like -"
"Jelly," Haru cut her off before coming around to her side. He cupped her cheek about to kiss her but she pushed him away slightly. He blinked confused.
"I only like the food that my husband makes," she told him before kissing him. She glared at the people around her. They shouldn't have a say in how or where she kissed her husband and Haru didn't mind. As she drew away, she saw sweat drops on his forehead and pressed her finger against them. "You feeling okay?" she asked. She turned around. "This is none of your god damn business. I have more of a right to be here with him than you do," she said. She saw the waiters and waitresses get back to their work. They had become used to her and her hostile attitude.
"It's hot in the kitchen," he smiled. "We're having guests in two weeks," he said, excitement shining in his eyes.
"Guests?" Rin asked, "That optimistic rabbit was here only last week after his travels in Germany. Plus he came the night after you cooked him a special dinner to give a violin concert. Although he did give all the money to us and said he just wanted to enjoy playing in your restaurant." She saw Haru smiled at that and sighed. He liked being around people unlike she did. He was always encouraging them, rooting them on, supporting them. It was something that she hated to admit she loved about him. Still, she knew that at times if she hadn't been there, people might take advantage of his kindness. Some said stupidity but she never did, she couldn't. Haru wasn't stupid. "Okay. I guess I can have dinner with -"
"Yuki," Haru said. "Machi couldn't come."
Rin groaned and rolled her eyes. "Okay, that dumb rat can come," she said and Haru looked to her before kissing her again.
"Thank you, Isu," he grinned. Rin knew that Yuki was one of Haru's best friends and vice-versa but she always felt jealous when Haru had Yuki come and visit. He was always polite and respectful but Haru still adored him. Rin felt jealous about that. Still, Yuki's visits kept Haru happy for at least a month.
"You're lucky that I love you so much, you charmer," Rin told him with a sigh and he grinned back to her.
"I love you more," he replied and Rin shook her head.
"Impossible," she stated. She saw that Haru was challenging that statement but she rolled her eyes and laughed. "I'm not letting you win on this," she informed him. She knew how much he loved her and sometimes she didn't believe she deserved it but Haru, Haru just deserved good things in his life. She promised at their wedding she would make sure he was happy. She would never break that promise.

After an hour and more food than Rin would have wanted to eat, she looked at her phone and sighed. There were still a few more hours until Haru would be home. As much as she didn't want to leave him, she didn't feel right taking up the seating when she could see there was now a line to get it. She grinned to herself. She always knew that he would be successful. Even when people had seen him as a joke, she knew that it would only be a matter of time before he showed everyone else how worthy he truly was.
As she saw him come out of the kitchen again, she walked over to him and threw her arms around him. He kissed her back and let his hand go through her medium length hair. "I'm going to go, thank you as always for the food," she smiled to him. This was the soft side to her that only a few people saw. "I'll meet you at home."
"Did you want me to walk you?" he asked and she kissed his forehead. He was so adorable.
"I brought my car," she said and saw him smile again. She looped her arms around his neck and then her eyes caught onto his two shelves of photographs and a couple of items of the Zodiac ox. One of the shelves held pictures of him with a number of different cousins but the second was all pictures of them. She blushed as she looked at their wedding picture. He had made sure to get her to smile by just being his charming self.
She kissed his lips once more before stepping back and grabbing her purse. "Don't make me wait too long tonight."
"How could I do tha-" he replied before being interrupted by a waitress coming over to him. Rin sighed as she felt Haru switch his attention to this new staff member. She looked in her early twenties and only half Japanse. She had bleached blonde hair and a body that some of her fellow models would be jealous of.
"Boss," she said, "Thank you for being so nice to me on my first week."
Rin rolled her eyes. She saw the girl bat her eyes at Haru and raised an eyebrow. What did this girl think that she was doing?
"I was hopping that I could treat you to a concert thi-" she said as she pulled out two tickets to a rock concert. Rin had the feeling that one of those tickets wasn't for her.
Haru stared at her before he moved over to Rin and wrapped an arm around her waist. "Lilli," he said as she turned to look at the former-horse, "Please meet my wife, Rin."
"Isuzu…Soma," Rin replied before showing off her wedding ring.
Lilli gasped, "Is that why this restaurant is called that,"
"Yes, exactly right," Rin replied in a slightly mocking manner. "Great job. Maybe one of these other employees would like to join you," she said before kissing Haru's cheek. Rin slipped her coat on before hearing Lilli again.
"You'll show me how to fold the napkins still, right?" she asked.
Haru nodded, "That I can do," he said to her before walking over to Rin. He held her hands in his and kissed her again. "I'll be home as early as I can," he said. Rin nodded, she gave another look at Lilli as if challenging her and then kissed her husband once more before leaving. Haru looked after her with a smile before leaning into his duties as a boss and owner of the restaurant. Rin was happy for his success and proud to be with him. She just hated stupid, ignorant girls who wanted more from him.

"Damn it," Rin said as she woke up on the sofa after waiting for Haru. She had a few lines from where she had slept on the faux leather couch. She had liked leather but Haru had explained that he still felt some connection to cows and wasn't fond of sitting on them unless they could moo. She hadn't had a problem with that. The fake leather sometimes looked better than the actual thing. Rin had put on a pair of pajamas and as comfy as they were, they didn't make her feel pretty with her mess of hair and marks on her face.
She grabbed her phone before seeing the time on it. Haru should have been home by now. She would feel offended had Lilli kept him later by making some stupid, airheaded, requests. As she got up, she saw his bike out front indicating that he had come back.
She looked around before seeing a figure outside the house. She grabbed her robe and went out to see him just sitting there and staring at the stars.
"So," she laughed and he turned towards her. "You feel that you want to make me worried tonight? Is that your intention?" she asked him and he smiled to her. His hair still in a topknot at the front.
"I forgot the time," he told her and Rin laughed. At least he hadn't gotten lost again. When they had first bought the house, she had insisted that they had come home together. When he had first returned home by himself, she had become used to the extra hour for him to find his way. At least now he knew where he was going. "The stars are beautiful, right?"
"Yes, billions of specks of hot gas," she shrugged before sitting down next to him. "You're out here to look at the stars."
"Yeah, partially," he told her before shivering. Rin sighed and wrapped her arms around him. She didn't want for him to feel ill again. Despite the fact that he would never again turn into an ox when sick, he could still develop a cold or maybe even worse if he wasn't careful.
"Okay." Rin said as she let her head rest on his arm. "What's the other part?"
"I was thinking about how much I love you. How I don't want to keep anything from you," he said honestly and Rin hummed.
"What do you think you're keeping from me?" she asked him before grabbing his hand and squeezing it. "And of course I love you. You don't need to think too hard on that. I love you and you love me. That's what is most true to me."
"I've not been feeling well," he told her honestly. "I think I might need to see Hatori."
"Then you better go because after telling me that, I won't let you return to the house next week unless you've at least made an appointment. If I hear that you've been going into work when you're ill -" Rin said before looking up at the stars with him. "What are you looking at anyway?" she asked him.
"Tauros," he replied with a smile. "Sign of the bull." Haru pointed to the sky but Rin was more interested in him. Cows, Ox, Bull. Would he ever be able to forget that period of his life, she wanted to.
