A/N: This one shot idea was literally born today and I can't say I can take full credit of it. I was talking to my sister after I watched a YouTube video called "Harry is DEATH" by SuperCarlinBrothers and she said "that would be a really good one shot" so this was born. I didn't exactly follow the ideas put forth by SuperCarlinBrothers but it was a very big influence.

Regarding my other stories, just assume everything is on hiatus. I'm actually in the process of writing some stories right now but I have no idea when they will be out because I don't want to start posting chapters when I'm in the middle. Anyway, I hope you like this story.

Throughout the centuries it has been Death's job to collect the souls of those that have died. Whether it be tragic deaths such as murder, torture, even simple muggle car accidents, or peaceful deaths such as dying in ones sleep. It has and will always be Death's job to collect the souls once they leave their bodies to ferry them off to "the next great adventure".

Even though Death is a magical being, they do not discriminate against taking muggle souls. After all, a soul is a soul and a job is a job. Death is a being, much like dragons in a way but also much more ancient, that predates the kind of thinking and magic studied at Hogwarts and other magical schools that tells you a wand is necessary. Wands are unneeded in their kind of work, a hand to grab that of a dead soul is much more efficient.

Death may be the main entity collecting the souls of the dead, but they have helpers for during wars or times when Death merely… disappears without a trace for a while. Sometimes that time period could span just a few years, or even a few hundred. Death's "helpers" are those that have been dead the longest, those that have grown so bored in their deaths and didn't want to be reincarnated. They travel forever unseen the plains of time. After all, one cannot expect Death to be able to collect every soul themselves when they have other jobs to do such as watching who has their Hallows and sometimes even visiting those still living.

The Peverell brothers were one such case. They outsmarted Death, although if you were to ask them, Death would never admit to the fault. So, Death gifted them with a reward. The first brother, Antioch, asking for the most powerful wand, the second brother, Cadmus, asking for something to recall someone from the dead, and the third brother, Ignotus, asking for something to hide him from Death itself. The Hallows were born.

If you go along with the goblin rules of ownership that is: the true owner of any object is the object's creator and once the one in possession of that object passes, the possession should be returned to that of the creator, then this story may already be figured out by you.

But what happens when Death, well, dies?

It may be a common misconception that Death has always been just one being from the beginning of time, and maybe even before that, but that is not the case. Death has been many over the course of time. Death has once been men, women, children, many other things, but has always been a sentient being at first. Death has been born of vampires and werewolves and muggles and always those that are able to think for themselves. Death has never been just one being and will never be. They will be born over and over again over time, letting the soul they were born into rest after a few hundred, maybe even thousand years. It is when Death dies that their "helpers" come out to take care of things until their next "reincarnation" has lived its life and finally leaves the land of living to take its place once more to collect souls.

It was in October of 1979 that Death, born of a Veela this time, once again decided it was their time to… pass on so to speak, and nine months later a baby was born on the 31st of July, 1980 by the name of Harry James Potter.

You have not read wrong. Harry Potter is another reincarnation of Death.

Who's to say the war he was destined to end was a war between a power hungry wizard and a young wizard that only wanted peace rather than what it really was? Death following a prophecy not yet made to finally bring a wayward soul to the after life. A power hungry wizard that had messed with the rules of time and nature just so he could live forever and Death chasing the soul that he had failed to capture when it was time. One does not simply disrupt the balance without consequences.

Throughout Harry's life he was surrounded by death because he was Death. Being the reincarnation of Death is not easy, you often outlive those around you. It is ironic, is it not? Death outliving those around them. Throughout Harry's life he was praised for surviving the killing curse, but a simple killing curse can not kill Death, so would not kill Death's reincarnation.

Death followed and finally captured the wayward soul through trials, but one does not become Death because it is an easy job. You must recognize when it is time to let go, and when it is time to still hold on. Many that are Death reincarnate go through trials such as those that Harry went through, although maybe not all that painful.

If you go along with the goblin rules of ownership that is: the true owner of any object is the object's creator and once the one in possession of that object passes, the possession should be returned to that of the creator, then this story may already be figured out by you.

The Hallows were finally returned to Death when he reincarnated as Harry Potter. Death finally lays to rest the Elder wand that caused so much death with it's creation. Death disposes of the stone that had made people mad and Death passes on the cloak to another generation.

Death as Harry Potter will live their life and when Harry has had that full life he is deserving of, he will die and carry on work as Death.

Death will go on for centuries more, until the end of time, ferrying souls to the other side and maybe the next reincarnation will be that of a werewolf.

Or maybe a vampire.

Or maybe a witch or wizard.

Or maybe a centaur.

Or maybe a muggle.

Death seems to know where they need to be at the time they need to be and they will forever go on to keep the balance.
