The Breakfast Project

Summary: The bakers must figure out the best way to get Azuma to regain his memories, especially if they need to go all over Hyrule to do so.

Azuma yawned as he made his way towards the dining room. He hadn't slept much, but he still couldn't help but think of the encounter he had with Link only moments earlier.

As he entered the dining room, he noticed one Meister Kirisaki pull Sidon out of the main dining area and towards one of the side balconies, saying, "Sidon? We need to talk. Now."

Azuma watched them leave together, both of them still talking with each other, before he looked towards the others at the main dining table. There was the orange-haired lady sitting with a guy in a baseball cap and a man wearing a bandanna, Kawachi from earlier, the dark-haired man called Kuroyanagi, as well as others. Some faces were more familiar to Azuma than others.

"Oh, Azuma!" He noticed the blond man in the baseball cap waving at him. Shachioko was his name, right? "Get over here! Managed to save some food for you before Kuroyanagi ate it."

"Shachioko?" The orange-haired woman sitting beside him managed. "Look again."

"Huh?" Shachioko turned to see that the plate he held up was now half-empty. "Hey! Kuroyanagi!"

"What?" Ryou Kuroyanagi, the man sitting across him with short, black hair, shrugged. "I'm hungry. And there's still plenty of food left at this table!"

Princess Zelda sat at the head of the dining table, clearing her throat. "Let's try not to get into a fight so early, please."

"Sorry," Both Shachioko and Kuroyanagi supplied.

"I saved you a spot!" Kawachi called, and Azuma decided it was best to follow Kawachi's lead, sitting down in the seat beside him. Kawachi was at Azuma's left, and Zelda was to his right.

Zelda offered Azuma a smile as he sat down beside her. "Good morning, Azuma. I hope that you slept well."

"Good morning. And yeah, I did – thanks!" Azuma offered her a grin. "The ball last night was pretty fun, too!"

"I'm glad to hear that." She nodded once. "Please, feel free to eat as much as you need."

Azuma didn't hesitate to start eating, after greeting the rest of the others seated at the dining table. Other than the absences of Sidon and Meister, everyone was there…

…even Link, who sat at the table and currently gobbled down some bacon and eggs.

"Huh!?" Azuma stared at Link. Link jumped slightly in his seat, staring back at him. "How long have you been here?"

"Huh?" Kawachi looked between Azuma and Link. "That's Link. He just got here a couple minutes ago."

"Ohhh." Azuma offered Link a smile. Link simply nodded to acknowledge his presence, before going back into eating what appeared to be a large amount of food. Not enough to rival Kuroyanagi, yet, but the presence of crumbs on his plate indicated that he'd been eating for a while.

"You and Link should have an eating contest, Kuroyanagi." Shachioko chuckled. "I want to know who wins!"

"I wish we had time for that, but probably not now." Kuroyanagi managed, scanning the whole group. "We need to discuss what to do about figuring out Azuma's memory and finding a way back home."

Azuma did his best not to sigh aloud at that. He wished that his own memory loss wasn't an issue. Or at least, not connected to finding a way back home, but…apparently it was, and he had no choice but to listen in and figure this all out, even if all the talk of his memory was getting tiring already.

Riju was interested in seeing how all of this would go. She knew she learned a bit about the other bakers from Monica, talking with her last night, but still. "As far as I understand, all of you need to find a way back home, and you think it could be done through food?"

Kuroyanagi nodded in response, looking towards Riju. "That's the case that could work for us, yes. We've had a lot of weird reactions to bread back where we come from, so if we can cause a reaction here that can bring us back home, that would work…maybe."

"In the case that it fails," Zelda managed, looking towards Kuroyanagi with a light frown, "Do you have any backup plans?"

"For getting back home? No." He admitted, shaking his head lightly. "Does anyone else have suggestions?"

"In the worst-case scenario, we're just stuck here for the rest of our lives, yeah?" Shachioko pointed out. "I mean…not all of us really wants to deal with family members. In the worst-case scenario, it's just a fresh start for all of us."

"And some of us really miss said families, Shachioko." Kawachi glared at him lightly. "And no offense, but I'd like to get back home!"

Shachioko visibly winced, offering Kawachi an apologetic glance. "Fair, fair…"

"At least we're not stuck in Hyrule while it's still in war." Suwabara noted, frowning lightly. "I doubt things would be as easy for us to get back as they are right now."

"Speaking of difficulty," Monica managed, looking between everyone, "It took all of us several days to get to this castle, right? If we're trying to get ingredients…how are we supposed to bring them all back without any of them rotting or getting spoiled?"

"I can ask Purah to see if she can develop more of the Shiekah slates that Link has." Zelda managed. "Link can use his to transport himself anywhere he wants, usually as long as he's been there before."

Link quietly nodded in agreement, and then kept eating quietly. Riju knew that Link was a voe of few words, but this was still

"That would help shorten travel time." Urbosa managed. "And the less travel means the less likely all of us are stuck travelling during a Blood Moon. How fast do you think Purah can make the slates?"

"I'm not sure. It's been a while since she made any since Link's own, but…" Zelda paused, before shaking her head. "I could still ask her. I can't say how long it'll take her, though."

"Couldn't we just travel by foot?" Kawachi asked. "Or horse? I mean, sure, it took us a ton of days to get here in the first place, but that was because we got deterred by the Blood Moon!"

"Er, not really." Daruk shook his head sheepishly. "Hyrule's kinda huge. And there's a lot more than just this place and all the places we came from."

"Wait, what?!" Shachioko burst out, jaw nearly dropping. "There's more to Hyrule than just this castle, Zora's Domain, Gerudo Town, Goron City and Rito Village!?"

"Of course there is." Revali drawled, and he sighed. "Did you honestly think it was going to be that simple?"

"I have to agree with Master Revali on that one." Teba spoke up. "I don't think anyone in Hyrule has been completely all over it unless they devoted themselves to much travelling. Even the stable system doesn't cover all the main areas."

Link paused, before taking out a slate. It lit up in his hands, and he held it out for Shachioko to see. On the slate was basically a map of Hyrule. Riju couldn't help but smirk at seeing Shachioko's bewildered face. Even if the voe wasn't great at combat yet, at least he was amusing to watch.

Shachioko gratefully took the slate from Link, and read the map.

It…it was a lot. Daruk was right. Why did Hyrule have to be so huge?

He swallowed as he handed the slate back to Link. "He's right." He managed. "Hyrule's way too huge for us to just run back and forth between the castle and everywhere else."

"Zora's Domain is the closest to Hyrule Castle, in terms of distance." Mipha frowned lightly. "But it's still relatively far. It took a few days for all of us to even run into each other in the first place!"

"What about horses and wagons? Several people use that to transport supplies here." Monica asked. "Would that help?"

"A little bit, but not much…."

"What about finding the common ingredients? Would they be found at a shorter distance from this castle?" Kuroyanagi asked.

"Common ingredients?" Zelda looked towards him. "Those are more easily found, but why ask about those first?"

"Let's think about the ingredients you need to make a basic bread." Kuroyanagi pointed out. "Wheat to make flour, maybe rice if we want to make rice flour, salt, maybe sugar if it becomes a sweet bread…but the more common ingredients are, the more likely they'll be found everywhere. That also means they'll be closer to the castle."

"Rock salt can be found by bashing a bunch of rocks." Daruk pointed out. "You can get some flint from there, too!"

"And Tabantha Wheat and Hylian Rice can be often found from various merchants and towns." Riju managed. "So there shouldn't be as much trouble getting those ingredients."

"But ingredients unique to different regions will be more difficult, right?" Yunobo managed. "And even some of those can be kind-of rare."

"That's true." Revali nodded. "And before you ask if I can fly ingredients from one place to another, I'm not your delivery person."

"What? So you can't just fly things over?" Shachioko sighed. "I was about to ask about that!"

"Master Revali has a point, Shachioko." Teba admitted. "We Rito can carry things in our claws and so on, but…the quantity of supplies you'll need would be harder for individual Rito to carry at once."

"We should make a 'control' bread first from the common ingredients here first, before we get any other ingredients from elsewhere." Kuroyanagi pointed out. "It probably won't result in any reactions, but at least we have an idea of what the bread will taste like by default. With the ingredients gathered from other regions, we can compare it to the control and see if there are any different reactions."

"That sounds like something you'd do in Harvard." Shachioko mumbled. "Making this into a giant science experiment. Kinda wish that Kanmuri was here."

"Kanmuri? Harvard?" Azuma looked towards Kawachi, who shrugged.

"Kuroyan and Kanmuri went there. It's a long story."

"And who's Kanmuri?"

"He worked with us at Pantasia." Kawachi sighed. "You still don't remember, do you?"

Azuma shook his head. "Not really."

"I'm sure you'll remember more after lots of good food!" Daruk chuckled. "And if there's going to be tons of bread involved, I'm sure you'll eat so much that you remember everything in no time!"

Yunobo stared at him. "I-I'm not sure if that's how it works, Daruk…"

"I think it's the best plan we have, though, or one of the better ones." Suwabara conceded, looking towards Yunobo quietly. "We won't get anywhere without trying the many options we have, and especially without exploring as many ingredients as possible."

"But how do we cover all of Hyrule as quickly as we can to get the ingredients and try them out quickly?" Riju asked.

"We could all go in pairs to collect the food, and then use Shiekah Slates that Princess Zelda mentioned to bring them back here." Monica suggested. "We could even travel in small groups." She scanned the Champions, as well as Riju, Yunobo and Teba. "All of you could introduce some of us to the ingredients specifically found from your areas, since you know the places so well!"

"Or we could all go back with you to the places we first came to." Kuroyanagi managed. "For instance, Monica and I were in Zora's Domain when we first arrived in Hyrule, so we could go back there with Sidon and Mipha to get supplies, since we have some idea of the area."

"Uh…" Shahcioko cleared his throat. "There's a problem with that idea, Kuroyanagi."

"There is?" Kuroyanagi looked towards him and Kawachi, frowning. "What is it?"

"Thing is," Kawachi managed, scratching the back of his head, "Shachioko and I are technically banned from Gerudo Village since we snuck in and got caught, so the two of us going back there isn't going to happen."

Kuroyanagi facepalmed himself. "Right. I forgot about that, thanks to your stupidity."

"Hey!"

Shachioko looked towards Urbosa, offering her the best pleading look he could give at the moment. "Can we just go in there in disguise again and maybe you don't expose us this time? Please?"

Urbosa chuckled, smiling, but she shook her head. "Though you made a more convincing vai than Kawachi did, Shachioko, no. We can't give you that permission."

Shachioko slumped in his chair. "Aww."

"If that's the case," Monica managed, pointing to herself, "Maybe an actual vai can go instead? Like me? That way, you don't have to worry about me getting kicked out!"

"Sure!" Riju offered her a soft grin. "We'd be happy to show you around."

"But Monica's the only vai out of all the bakers." Urbosa mused, scanning the other bakers. "So she'd be going alone with us unless…" A soft hum left her, before she asked, "Is there anyone else in this group that is…vai-like in appearance? It would be easier for them to pass through the town disguised."

Kuroyanagi, Azuma and Suwabara looked between each other, before they all shook their heads.

"What about Meister?" Azuma asked suddenly. "Because he has long, flowing hair?"

"But he's not ultra-feminine in appearance, though." Kawachi managed. "He'll need a disguise for sure, but he's way too tall for mine to fit."

"What about that merchant we saw at the oasis?" Shachioko asked Kawachi. "Maybe they're still there and can get one custom-made…"

"Ooh, yeah! That could maybe work out…"

"I'd be interested in knowing more about Zora's Domain." Suwabara spoke up, and the others looked towards him as the samurai swordsman's brows furrowed a bit. "Perhaps I can learn more about it while I'm there?"

"Uh, sure." Kuroyanagi managed, before Kawachi stared.

"Wait, Zora's Domain!? It's not like the desert, is it?"

"No." Mipha reassured him. "It's quite the opposite."

"Then I'm going!" Kawachi blurted out. "To Zora's Domain!"

"What!?" Suwabara stared at Kawachi. "You?"

"I can't go to Gerudo Town, anyway, so I might as well go to Zora's Domain." He shrugged. "At least I won't be kicked out of the Domain for being a guy, right?"

"Where should I go, then?" Shachioko asked, tilting his head. "Rito Village? Goron City?"

Daruk offered Shachioko a grin. "How about you come with me and Yunobo to Goron City? We'll make sure you get some Flamebreaker Armor for the journey."

Shachioko nodded in agreement. "Yeah…." He looked towards Urbosa, and then Daruk and Yunobo. "Sounds good."

"And Azuma?" Kuroyanagi looked towards Azuma. "Any place you want to go, in particular?"

"Uh….how about Rito Village?" Azuma asked, tilting his head to the side. "It sounds interesting."

"Well," Revali piped up, "I suppose you'd be easier to bring along, out of everyone. Hopefully you know how to use a paraglider better than Meister."

Azuma swallowed nervously, but nodded.

"So it's settled. We'll make a control bread first using the common ingredients, and then we can all go to the other regions of Hyrule to get the other unique foods." Kuroyanagi finished. "Sidon and Mipha can go with Kai and Kawachi to Zora's Domain. Daruk and Yunobo can go to Goron City with Shachioko. Monica and Meister can go to Gerudo City with Urbosa and Riju, and I'll go to Rito Village with Azuma, Teba and Revali."

Link cleared his throat, and Kuroyoanagi looked towards him as he spoke a few words.

"I can…go with Azuma." He spoke. He didn't say much else, but he held up the Shiekah slate for emphasis. "I can take us there with my own slate."

"You want to go with Azuma?" Kuroyanagi asked, for clarification. Link nodded. "Thank you, Link. That's really helpful."

"Then you can come with me, then." Shachioko quipped, looking towards Kuroyanagi with a wide grin. "If I have to suffer being in the heat and wearing heavy armor, you're suffering with me!"

"Hey!"

Before either of them could burst into a mini-argument, Meister Kirisaki and Prince Sidon both returned. Kuroyanagi was personally relieved to have something happen to stop potential fighting from happening.

"Good morning," Sidon breathed, scanning the group. "Apologies for our earlier absence. We had to…discuss a few things."

Meister frowned lightly as he looked at the other bakers, noticing amused grins slowly appearing on a few others' faces. "What exactly did Prince Sidon and I miss?"

"Plans to figure out getting Azuma's memory back." Kuroyanagi quipped, offering him a slight grin. "We're going to split up and go to the various regions of Hyrule, and then bring all the ingredients we can find back here to the castle. The idea is that hopefully we can make something that will restore Azuma's memory, or at least get us back to Japan if we create bread out of it."

"Wait, really?" Sidon's eyes widened. "Is the plan that all of you will create some great reaction with your bread baking skills?!"

"That…does sound like an idea that would work." Meister managed. "I mean, we've had people die and come back to life. Also, someone eating a bread we don't know how it was made resulted in us being here in Hyrule. Once we consider those factors, it makes sense that there should be a way to bring us back to Japan via bread."

"And if we split up," Kuroyanagi explained, "We can all get the ingredients individually and gather them together faster."

"But we can only carry so much at a time." Meister pointed out. "Wouldn't going together as a whole group to each place be easier? There's only so long that all the ingredients will last, too, if we take travelling into account."

"If we're lucky, we'll have some devices made for us to use for getting to places faster." Kuroyanagi reassured him. "And besides, we're going to make a basic bread first from commonly found ingredients and then we'll make variations with the other ingredients found in the regions."

"So it's become a culinary expedition?" Sidon's eyes widened. "That sounds amazing!"

"And," Kuroyanagi looked towards Meister sheepishly, "We…kind-of already decided that you should go to Gerudo Town with Riju, Monica and Urbosa, since you're most-likely to resemble a vai best. Sorry."

Meister frowned lightly. "I don't mind having to dress up as needed, but I don't have any Gerudo attire or any attire that makes me appear as a vai. That will be an issue."

Kuroyanagi shrugged. "I'm sure Urbosa can find you something. And Kawachi and Shachioko mentioned to me earlier that they got their disguises from a merchant in the Gerudo Region, so you might want to ask them for more details. We have about a week to prepare for the journeys in the meantime, since we have to wait for the slates being developed for us, so we have plenty of time to find something beforehand."

"Those are good points." The General Manager agreed. "I'll ask Kawachi and Shachioko soon."

Kuroyanagi noticed Meister's gaze drift towards Sidon briefly, and Sidon's gaze briefly looked towards Meister, before it snapped towards Kuroyanagi.

"How soon do you plan to go on your journeys? A week?" Sidon asked.

"Yes, a week from now." Kuroyanagi confirmed. "I'm sure we probably shouldn't keep you and the others away from your respective regions, either…"

"Well," Sidon managed, "Mipha and I can at least speak with Zelda over a few matters in the Domain while we're here, in the meantime. I think Father and Muzu already left the castle after last night…and besides," A smile came to his face as he looked between Kuroyanagi, Meister, and then glanced towards the others chatting with each other, "I'd be happy to get to know more about all of you bakers and spend time with the others, especially since Hyrule is still restoring itself."

"That's good to hear." Meister smiled lightly.

Sidon had to excuse himself to speak to Mipha and the others, and as he did so, Meister looked towards Kuroyanagi. "So?"

"So what?" Kuroyanagi asked.

"Did you speak with Mipha yet about the feelings?"

"No." Kuroyanagi sighed, shaking his head. "I assume that's what you and Sidon did just earlier, though."

"Please don't tell anyone else." Meister sighed. "We…plan to just explore and see how it goes. For now, it's something we want to keep private for our sakes."

"I'll keep my lips zipped." Kuroyanagi reassured him, offering him a soft smile. "As for the others, I don't know if they'll pry, but…we can assume they might try."

"Whatever happens, happens. As long as Sidon and I can take things slow for now, I think we'll be fine." A soft chuckle left Meister at that. "Just…try to speak to Mipha about it at some point. About you and her, that is. I think you two would be happy together."

"There's more than just feelings to consider." Kuroyanagi mumbled, and he tried not to think of Cathy again.

As Kuroyanagi caught Meister up to speed on all the plans, Yunobo noticed Shachioko looking towards him, before asking, "What's it like?"

"Huh?" Yunobo quickly swallowed the food he'd been eating, before asking, "What is what like?"

"Goron City. How hot is it?"

"Er, well…" Yunobo thought about his life in Goron City. It was nice, at least for him. Link, on the other hand… "It's…hot. You're going to need Flamebreaker Armor to get up there. I can make some if I have the right tools and other supplies before we go. Or we can probably buy some. I don't know what your heat tolerance is like, but most Hylians usually need Flamebreaker Armor and some elixirs to make it up there."

"That's how hot it is?" Shachioko looked horrified, eyes widening. "Is it really that bad? How are all of you alive?"

"We Gorons are durable enough to take the heat." Yunobo explained with a chuckle. "And there are elixirs you can drink, too, to prevent being on fire."

"On fire!?" Shachioko looked even more horrified, and Yunobo swallowed. Maybe that last part wasn't a great thing to mention.

"I-I mean," The young Goron tried to save the conversation, "I'm sure you'll be fine! You were really tough in that last battle, right? You'll definitely be okay!"

Shachioko sighed. "Only because I got saved by Mipha's healing magic and I was hit non-fatally with that arrow." He glanced towards Urbosa and the others, and then towards Yunobo. "I want to get stronger, you know? So I can help out the others."

"Stronger?" Yunobo let a soft hum leave him at that. Was there anyone in Gerudo Town that could help him get stronger? He paused, then remembered – the Gut Check Brothers! "Oh! Wait! I think I know people that can help you get stronger in Goron City! The Gut Check Brothers!"

Cue Shachioko raising a brow. "Gut Check Brothers?"

"Yeah! They're always training to get stronger, back in Goron City. They're great people." Yunobo admired them from a distance, though he knew he didn't quite have the physical strength like they did. At least they were nice Gorons, though. "You'd get along with them well! Maybe I can…introduce you to them?"

Shachioko paused, tilting his head to the side, but then he grinned. "Alright! Sounds like a good idea. Thanks, Yunobo."

"No problem!"

Yunobo just hoped that Shachioko would not catch on fire, nor wear himself out from working with the Gut Check Brothers. They were great at training, but their training techniques could be…kind-of extreme. It was one thing for Link to handle them, for example, but Shachioko didn't have the same combat and/or training experience, so it might go differently for him. Yunobo just hoped, whatever happened, that Shachioko might get some great training out of it. Maybe it would help his confidence, too!

It would be a project, Yunobo thought. Shachioko making a new version of himself, that is.

Hopefully that project, and the project the bakers started with finding a way home, would work out. Yunobo was sure it would. Sure, they had some bumps in the road already, but at least everyone was working together well despite it all.

We have all the Champions, Link, Zelda, Riju, Sidon, and Teba helping them, Yunobo thought. And me, too. I'm sure we'll be fine. No need to worry!

If that was the case though, why did Yunobo have the nagging feeling, in the back of his mind despite these thoughts, that things might just go wrong?
