An AU of the episode Anansi. Currently a one-shot. May end up being longer. Probably will end up being longer XD. Hope you enjoy!
Since the beginning of time, our world has been at war; divided between light and dark, between good and evil, a scale balanced equally, untippable and forever eternal. This balance has always been maintained by beings of great power and origin-the miraculouses, magical creatures bestowed upon those who have proven themselves worthy, courageous, noble, and honorable.
For two thousand years, the world of the miraculous has remained hidden, fearing to come into the light until the time when they would be needed again. The age of the Miraculous Guardians has long passed but their legacy lives on. Only those chosen to wield such power are granted the knowledge of the secret world, given the power to change the world for better or for worse.
One Guardian lives on, in a secret place far away from the rest of the world, where the forces of evil cannot reach and darkness cannot prevail. But something has changed, the time for Miraculouses has come once again, and this time, it might take everything and every one of them to save the world...
...And find one who is destined to become the next Guardian of the Miraculous.
The old man paced the meditation hall, his hands clenched firmly behind his back and his expression grim. Despite his outwardly modern appearing attire; a flamboyant Hawaiian shirt and tan cardo shorts, Fu knew more about the secrets of the past than anyone in existence.
And tonight, it was those secrets that were causing him the most distress.
Nearby, a small turtle-like Kwamis hovered, watching his master with sadness and confusion. "Master Fu," he spoke, his voice steady and flawless. "What seems to be troubling you, sir?"
"Every day the darkness grows stronger, Wayzz," the guardian sighed. "I sense the evil dwelling within the city. I fear it will soon overtake us all. We have already lost the peacock and butterfly. What chance have we if this darkness were to find us here? We cannot all fight and since you are the only Kwamis bonded to me—"
"Do not despair, Master," Wayzz interrupted, hovering closer. "We will find others to fight alongside us. We will not face this danger alone."
Fu only looked at him, sadness stretched across his features. "I hope you are right, dear friend. For the sake of Paris, I hope you are right. Come, it's time for our meditations."
The kwamis complied, zipping over to the ancient record player and setting the needle securely on the track. The elder, meanwhile, took a seat on the floor mat and closed his eyes, inhaling deeply. He had to let out all of these negative emotions. They were doing nothing to ease his worry and fear and now was not the time to let the despair take hold. He needed to be strong, now more than ever.
All of a sudden, the doors flew open and a dark-haired girl flew in, a red and black spotted kwamis right behind. "MASTER FU!" she yelped, skidding to a halt breathlessly. "Nino can't hold off Anansi for long! She's about to get ahold of Cat Noir's Miraculous!"
Well, so much for meditation. Fu opened his eyes slowly to eye the Miraculous Wearer before him. This was not the first time he'd been rudely interrupted from his relaxation and he half suspected he knew the purpose of this meeting before the question was even voiced. "Hello, Marinette," he said calmly, standing up and moving over to the record. Wayzz instinctively pulled away to hover beside his master, watching with wide eyes as the Miraculous Box was revealed. Carefully, he carried the box to the table and held it out to the girl, unfolding the latches as he did. "For this quest, you will need some aid. Pick an ally you can trust to fight alongside you on this mission. Choose wisely, such powers on hand to fight for the greater good. When the mission is over, you must retrieve the miraculous from them."
Marinette reached hesitantly toward the fox miraculous and then paused, as though remembering that it would be no good in this situation since Alya was the one in danger. Her eyes scanned the options and doubt clouded her vision. Fu noticed this and he gave her an encouraging smile. Time is of the essence, young one. I can sense your determination. You already know who you want to gift the miraculous to, but yet you hesitate. Why?
He received his answer as Marinette took a deep breath and lifted her eyes from the box. "Master Fu," she said carefully. "That's the Miraculous I need…I-I mean, if t-that's o-okay with you?" She pointed and Fu followed her gaze, his heart leaping as Wayzz stared back undeterred.
The turtle miraculous, came a small voice from the back of Fu's mind, along with a thousand warning sirens. The symbol of the Miraculous Guardian. Whoever bears the role of Jade Turtle holds the responsibility of protecting all of the others.
Not a warrior. I sense in this battle, a protector may indeed be more suited to Ladybug and Chat Noir's needs.
He twisted toward Wayzz, waiting for the turtle's nod of acceptance. "Very well," he said slowly, removing his wristband and holding it out. With a grin, Wayzz spiraled and disappeared inside the shell-like jewel. "Remember, Marinette," Fu went on seriously as the girl grinned up at him excitedly. "Return him to me as soon as the akuma is defeated." Wayzz is more than just a kwamis. He is the key to restoring harmony and balance throughout the universe. If he were lost or given to someone who was unworthy, the stability of the entire world would be at risk.
Of course, Marinette did not know this. To her, Wayzz was nothing more than another kwamis, powerful, an equal to Tikki and Plagg. She had no idea what holding his powers truly meant, or how crucial it was that she selected the right bearer.
"I will," Marinette promised fervently.
"Very well, do you have someone in mind for this role?"
She grinned.
"Actually, I think I found just the right person."
And it appeared that she had. Separated from his partner for the first time in centuries, Fu decided to return once more to his meditation. Lost deep on thought and concentrating strongly, he found himself subconsciously connecting to the new wearer of the Jade Turtle and more directly, to Wayzz.
The emotions of the new superhero flooded his veins. There was fear and anxiety there, along with an underlying sense of powerlessness, but Fu also detected the flicker of determination residing within the boy's heart. He was unsure but he was willing to fight. That was the sign of a true miraculous user, one who wasn't afraid to fight for what was right, a sensation Fu himself was very accustomed to.
In the end, that determination was what secured the team's victory. The next day, Marinette returned with Tikki and Wayzz hovering at her side, talking loudly about their adventures the evening before.
Fu glanced up from his tea, eyebrows raised, as the three walked through the door and he carefully set his cup down and smiled their way. "Well?" he inquired. "How did it go?" Although he already knew the answer, he couldn't smother the grin upon her face. The mission was successful, then.
"Master Fu!" Marinette gasped, her eyes wide. "He did it! They did it! Together! Wayzz and Nino were amazing!"
I know. The boy and Wayzz functioned remarkably together for their first transformation. "I'm proud of you, Ladybug," he said gently. "You gained a great ally yesterday and now you have returned Wayzz to me in one piece."
"As if you had any doubts," Wayzz snarked, earning a giggle from Tikki.
"Thank you again for entrusting me with him," Marinette said as Wayzz turned and swept over to hover beside his master. "He really saved the day."
"It wasn't me," Wayzz corrected. "It was your friend who did most of the work. He's a good kid, Marinette. A bit…odd, but with a good heart."
Fu had a feeling that was directed more toward him than the girl.
"Thanks, Wayzz," Marinette responded.
The turtle shrugged. "No need for thank you. It's the truth. I cannot lie."
Marinette smiled, turning her gaze away from the kwami and back to the elder sitting patiently in the corner. "Master," she said slowly. "There's…actually something I want to talk to you about."
Fu set down his cup, giving the girl his full attention. "Go on," he said, prompting her on as she hesitated.
"Ummmm," Marinette lingered on her question a moment longer, possibly trying to figure out the best way to phrase it. She scratched the back of her head nervously. "It's just…Chat Noir and I have been working so hard to keep the city safe, right?"
"Yes…?"
"But there have been times, like last night for instance, where our powers and miraculouses haven't been enough," she barreled on, ignoring the raised eyebrow from the man. He suspected he knew where she was going with this, but let her continue nevertheless. "Sir…" she took a long, deep breath and clenched her hands. "I'd like your permission to hold on to the fox and turtle miraculouses. Just until we can be sure Hawkmoth is really defeated. My fr—Rena and Caraspace can be great heroes if they would just be permitted to keep their powers."
Fu sighed. "And you would like me to give you back Trixx and Wayzz so that your friends can continue being…superheroes?" There was a twinkle in his eyes. Yes, I know very well who the turtle and fox are, Ladybug.
"I'm game!" came Trixx's voice as the fox popped up from his charm, beaming hopefully.
Wayzz hesitated, glancing from Fu to Marinette and back again. "Master," he said slowly. "Are you seriously considering—"
"Easy, Wayzz," Fu cut him off. "What the girl speaks is the truth. However," he added sternly, noticing Mari's hopeful grin. "I once warned you of the dangers of discovery. Now that Hawkmoth has seen four miraculouses in play, he will no doubt be planning something drastic. You have proven yourself trustworthy and dependable, and for that reason only will I permit you to take them."
"But, Master, I—"
"It's all right, Wayzz." Fu smiled at his partner. "I will be just fine. Besides, there's a young man out there who needs your help to transform. I think you should go assist him."
Wayzz's already wide eyes grew rounder. "But—"
"Come on, Wayzz!" Trixx interrupted, patting him on the back. "Don't be such a killjoy! It'll be fun to get out and stretch our limbs a little! Two thousand years can really reduce one's flexibility, you know."
"That's what I'm afraid of," Wayzz confessed.
"Wayzz," Fu went on. "There is a great disturbance in the force. I am counting on you to figure out a way to fix it."
"Uh…" the turtle glanced from his master to Marinette. "All right," he said, dropping down next to his stone. "I suppose you're right." He reached for the bracelet but then paused, looking back once more. "Don't forget about me, Master Fu," he begged.
"I won't," the old man replied. "I'll be here when it's time for you to return home."
"I'm counting on it." Wayzz gave him a respectful bow and then he was gone in a blur of green.
"Thank you, Master Fu," Marinette said, bowing hastily to him.
Fu nodded. "Remember, Marinette, no matter how dark the road may seem, there is always a way to succeed. You and Chat Noir have done well on your own so far, but you are about to add two new worlds into your own. Be wary that this does not affect the outcome of your battles."
"I will," Marinette promised, picking up the bracelet and Trixx's necklace. "Thank you, Master Fu, thank you."
"Run along, child," the man said good-humoredly. "I am an old man and I need my sleep now."
Marinette smiled before hastily exiting the room and closing the door quietly behind her.
Fu glanced toward the box, lying open and forgotten on the table before him. With four miraculouses gone, let loose in Paris, and two more lost, he knew it would only be a matter of time before Hawkmoth discovered the heroes' true identities and put everything they'd worked for at risk.
He only hoped that, by gifting them Trixx and Wayzz, the children might have a chance to do what he himself was never able…free the world from evil, once and for all.
