'Agent Booth and I are not friends,' insisted Zack. Brennan glanced at her husband who shifted uncomfortably.
'So, how did you feel about Agent Booth marrying Dr. Brennan and then having two children with her?' asked Aubrey pulling out the wedding picture of Booth and Brennan from three years ago. Booth's head was rumpled as if Zack was trying to rip it off but didn't go through with it in the end.
'I did not approve of it if that what you are asking. Dr Brennan is a brilliant and insightful, whereas agent Booth is lacking the basic knowledge of any brunch of science and to be completely straight it surprises me that Dr Brennan would give in to an archaic ritual of consummation of a monogamous relationship.'
'Help me our here, Zack, why is any kind of personal relationship between Dr Brennan and agent Booth is any concern of yours? As far as I know you used to be Dr Brennan's assistant. Or there is something else we don't know of?'
'I always thought he had a bit of a crush on you,' whispered Booth.
'If you are referring to any kind of sexual relationship between me and Dr Brennan, then I can assure you that you are in fault. As appealing as the thought might be, I am fully aware that Dr Brennan never saw me as a prospective lover…'
'Ouch!' winced Booth, it was good that Zack couldn't hear or see them.
'However, I must express my disappointment with the choice she made. Ever since agent Booth appeared in our lives, he disrupted a purely scientific and empirical atmosphere that made it so comfortable for me to work at Jeffersonian.'
'You still haven't answered the question, Zack. Why does it bother you who Dr Brennan married?'
'Because she is wasting her valuable time on conventions that have no significant meaning…'
Booth rolled his eyes while Brennan took his hand to calm him down, she knew that her very passionate husband finds this conversation insulting. To be honest, so did she, her family, her life with Booth and their children made her life wonderful, complete.
'Over the years, whenever I was familiarizing myself with the lives of my friends, I was wondering why Dr Brennan would choose someone like agent Booth as her life partner. I am sure other people with high IQ such as serial killers Howard Epps and Christopher Pelant, who both expressed a romantic interest I must add, although, being undeniably dangerous, had much more in common with Dr Brennan than someone like agent Booth.'
'So, are you comparing yourself to serial killers, Zack?'
'No, I was just merely stating a fact that there were people in Dr Brennan's life who were much more suitable.'
'Like serial killers?'
'I do not care for your implications, agent Aubrey.'
Brennan felt tears in her eyes, how that sweet and brilliant kid she considered her protégé could turn out to be this? Booth was clearly fed up with it, he sighed, gave a quick hug to his wife and went into interrogation room. Brennan wanted to join him, but she felt a little weak and it was not a good thing for questioning a dangerous suspect. Zack is a dangerous suspect again, possibly a serial killer, unbelievable.
'Hey, Zack,' Booth fell next to Aubrey. Brennan knew that he won't be cruel to Zack despite his behavior.
'Agent Booth,' nodded Zack. 'I take it you were the witness to this confusing conversation.'
'I don't care what you think about my marriage or relationship with my wife,' still his manliness demanded emphasis, Brennan couldn't help but shake her head. 'What I care about if you actually murdered those people and why did you kidnap Bones?'
'As stated previously, I didn't kill anybody. And as for Dr Brennan's kidnapping as I explained, it was a necessary evil.'
'You could have called me, you know.'
'You never liked me, agent Booth, why would you believe me?'
'I would at least check your statement, we worked together for three years, Zack, you are smart kid, you knew I wouldn't just leave it, especially if Bones' life was in danger. What I think, you needed an excuse to get to Bones or escape a loony bin.'
'I see logic in your words. But I would prefer to discuss all this further with Dr Brennan. As stated before, you agent Booth and agent Aubrey are far below my intellectual level, I need to talk to Dr Brennan.'
'It's not going to happen, Zack,' insisted Booth firmly.
'In this case, I would like to stop this conversation. I will not say another word.'
Aubrey and Booth left Zack on his own, they still needed more in order to crack him, Brennan was waiting for them anxiously.
'So, what do you think?' asked Aubrey.
'I should go in there, I should talk to him,' said Brennan.
'Bones, I know you care about Zack, even now, but he is dangerous, you heard him, he has the same weird fascination with you as other freaks. He basically confessed when compared himself to Epps and Pelant.'
'Who is Epps by the way?' interfered Aubrey.
'He was a serial killer from years ago, when Booth and I just started working together, one of our first cases.'
'Yeah, Zack was helping to catch him too. He was…ehm, how do I put this, very intrigued by Bones. Especially after she broke his wrist,' smirked Booth.
'And Pelant?' Aubrey knew who Pelant was, but he didn't know that he was interested in Dr Brennan that way.
'Similar story, although, Pelant was much more dangerous. Come to think about it, serial killers do have some kind of an unhealthy interest in you, Bones.'
'Well, it's understandable. I am brilliant and I work in the field that is closely collides with their interest, so it's a completely rational extension.'
'So that doesn't bother you one bit?' winced Aubrey.
'Not more than any other discomfort associated with a danger of our jobs. If I were intimidated every time when someone tries to influence our lives, I would never be able to work with Booth.'
'Fascinating, Bones, but you know what, I think we should call it a day, so I can get you home, ha? What do you say, even you know that we need a break before going further with this. Besides, Hank and Christine are dying to see you.'
'Sure, but I still think I should talk to Zack.'
'Yeah, we can discuss it later, preferably after a glass or two. See you later, Aubrey.'
'Yeah, see ya.'
