Ruby just wanted to go to sleep by this point. The baby in her arms though was not allowing that. Penny stood just beside her as they took turns rocking Reina. From what Ruby and Penny had been told, babies were incredibly hard to get to sleep sometimes. It was after midnight and Reina had yet to close her little silver eyes and go to sleep.

"Do you think she's hungry maybe?" Penny suggested. Now the married couple's ears were lucky that Reina wasn't crying, but she was incredibly fussy and Ruby was worried one wrong move with that and the little girl would start screaming her lungs out.

Penny and Ruby had been at this for the past hour and a half, they stood in Reina's room, just beside the infant's crib. Nothing they tried seemed to work.

"Maybe? You can go get her a bottle of milk, warm milk, I think it'll calm her down," Ruby said. She took a moment to sit in the rocking chair and continue to bounce Reina. Penny swiftly left the room and Ruby began to talk a bit to herself, and sort of to Reina, "Why don't you want to sleep?"

Obviously, there was no response from the infant but she did seem to stare into her mom's silver eye, making Ruby wonder to herself what was going through the baby's head.

"Are… You scared of going to sleep?" She didn't know where that came from. She knew that probably wasn't it. Reina only continued to stare. Ruby continued without an actual goal, "Mommy's scared of sleep too, you know."

Silence once again. Reina shifted a little before whimpering a little.

"Shhh… I know, sleep is scary…" Ruby admitted, "I don't always like going to sleep, I don't like the idea of it… It's the nightmares, really. I've always had them." Reina ended up raising one of her hands to reach out for the place where Ruby's missing eye was, "Yeah… I think you know what I mean. But I remind myself every time I go to sleep, that your mother is going to be right beside me when I wake up. And that you will also be there. Your mother's like a firefly to me, she lights up my life, and when nights get scary she knows what to do… She's there for me…"

"One day you'll know why your mommy has those nightmares, but for now remember, me and your mother love you a lot, and we'll always be here," She smiled. Reina's face seemed to lighten as she yawned.

'Fly me to the moon and let me play among the stars.'

Ruby didn't often sing, the only times she did she was typically alone. But it felt right for this moment. The song was a song her mom used to sing for her when she was little. She just vaguely remembered how it went, enough to write it down and memorize it once she was a bit older.

'Let me see what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars.'

She began to rock Reina again.

'In other words, hold my hand.'

The hum of a microwave going could be heard from down the hall, but Ruby figured that the milk might've not been necessary anymore.

'In other words, darling kiss me.'

She lifted Reina at that part and kissed her daughter's forehead.

'Fill my heart with song and let me sing forevermore.'

'You are all I long for, all I worship and adore.'

'In other words, please be true.'

'In other words, I love you.'

Ruby opened her eye when she finished and stared down at Reina. The baby's eyes were closed finally. Penny had entered the room again by this point and was surprised to see Ruby holding a sleeping Reina.

Penny didn't speak, in fear of the infant waking up once more. Ruby stood up and walked back to Reina's crib and laid her down. She lifted a blanket and placed it over her daughter. Ruby very quietly headed out of the room with Penny, being sure to be quiet when closing the door. When it was closed the wives let out a sigh of relief.

"What did you do?" Penny asked. Ruby smiled looking back at the door to their daughter's room.

"I did something my mom used to do to help me sleep is all," With that, the two walked to their own room and got under the sheets. Beside each other Ruby gave Penny a goodnight kiss before she drifted to sleep.

She remembered there was nothing to be scared of when going to sleep. Penny was here. And now Reina was here.

And, even though she wasn't there physically, she knew her mom would be there with her as well.

You see imma get a bit personal here but... This hits really personal to me because this version of the song specifically (it's by Laurie Berkner in the album Rocket Ship Run, go listen to it, it's gorgeous) my mom used to sing to me when I was little, and I used to play it a lot on my CD player when I'd go to sleep so this just fills me with a lot of nostalgia to write

Anyways that's about it

Hope you enjoyed it e-

Also yes

I know the exact point of reference

It's lightly based on the ending scene in Mocking Jay Part 2 (Or the end of the book if you haven't seen the movies) and I was like hm

Why not

So yeah
