NOTES: I was thinking about this short story, so I decided to write it.
SONGS:
Mike called Kate and Buffer into his cabin. He wanted to find out if the rumour was true and who might have started it.
"I hear there's a rumour going around that the two of you are in a relationship," Mike said.
"What?" Buffer said in shock.
"It's existence has put us in a very difficult position. Whether there is any truth to the rumours, I'm duty-bound to investigate the situation."
"There is no situation. There is absolutely no truth to the rumour." Kate said.
"I second that, Boss."
Kate turned to Buffer. "Do you have any idea why anyone would think that?"
"No," Buffer said, looking at Kate.
"Well, evidently somebody does," Mike says to them. "You both know and understand the Navy policy regarding onboard relationships."
"Absolutely, Sir," Kate acknowledges..
"Yes, Sir," Buffer replies.
"You have to be one hundred per cent above suspicion regarding this"
"We are boss," Buffer waves his hand between him and Kate. "It's us, Boss."
"Of course, I accept your word; the rumours are nonsense."
"Thank you," Kate said.
"I want the whole business to go away. So the both of you, do your best to make sure that it does."
"Yes, Sir," Kate said.
"You can count on that, Sir," Buffer added.
"Ok, Buffer, you can go."
Buffer left Mike's cabin, closing the door behind him.
"I feel guilty, but I don't understand how this has happened," Kate says.
Mike steps towards her, "Yes, well, who knows."
"You know I would never."
"X, we discussed it."
They look at each other as Kate steps close to Mike and kisses him.
"You are the only one I'm interested in, Mike."
Mike wrapped his arms around her, "I know, Kate, but who would do this?"
Kate thought about it a moment, then looked at Mike as it dawns on her who the culprit is.
"Kate?"
"I know who it is."
"Who and I'll deal with that person."
"Two Dads"
"I should have known. Look, you better go… and be careful."
"I will." They kiss, then Kate walks to the door, opens it, and looks back at Mike. "I guess you won't be sending Buffer and me to the pearling larger," Kate said when she saw Buffer and a couple of crew outside Mike's cabin.
"Absolutely, I am. If I change the plan, it will feed the rumour mill; you're both professionals."
"Yes, Sir."
"I hope we can get past this," Mike said, seeing Buffer and the two crewmembers in the passageway.
Kate turns and walks out, closing the door behind her.
