Chapter one, Caroline Diggory

They weren't an ordinary duo. Neither were the two ordinary themselves, either. She was kind and warm, while he was cold and silent. One of the only things they had in common was that they were both equally powerful. As they became adults, sticking together for their entire life, everyone would soon know them. They would be forever written inside the history books as some of the most famous people to have ever existed, next to Harry Potter in the future. Who were these people, these people who would become so widely known and famous?

They were Caroline Diggory and Tom Marvalo Riddle.

Wool's Orphanage wasn't your dream orphanage. It wasn't shiny clean, the food wasn't your everyday grade food and the state of the orphanage wasn't brand new, either. But it was still better off than most orphanages. Among the many children who resided in the orphanage, Tom Riddle was known by everyone to be strange in every way. Abnormal things seemed to always be happening around him only. As such, nobody was willing to play with Tom, sit next to Tom or do anything at all with him. Tom didn't care. He always read his books in the corner, ignoring all the jeers and taunts from the other kids.

"One day," Tom thought to himself as he read a book called A history of the world, "one day, I'll give them all what they deserve, I'll pick them off one by one slowly, give them back everything they gave to me."

As Tom was staring out of the window thinking of nasty things to do to the other children when he grew up, when a voice from the door interrupted his thoughts.

"Children! I am delighted to announce that we have a new girl that will be joining us today, please say hello to Caroline!" Mrs. Cole said. Startled from his daydream, Tom slightly jumped in his chair which thankfully no one seemed to notice. He kept reading his book, not bothering to turn around just for a look at a new girl. After Mrs. Cole had left, Tom had glanced at the new orphan out of some curiosity. She had long wavy hair that ended frizzly, and gray eyes under brown eyebrows. She had an average body and was wearing a green skirt and some dirty looking top. "Great, another annoying prat, how am I going to live in this place with a kid like her now?" Tom sourly thought to himself. He immediately decided that he hated her. As Tom was reading, the new girl approached him. She tapped Tom on the back.

"Hi, Mrs. Cole introduced me, but I'm Caroline Diggory! What's yours?" Caroline asked.

"None of your particular business." Tom snarled, and slamming his book shut he went to his room. From that moment, Tom vowed to himself to ignore her until he died.

It wasn't easy to ignore her, however, especially when she was his roommate.

Tom had gone to the bathroom and was coming out. As he turned around the corner heading to his room, he froze in his tracks. There, he saw Caroline struggling with a heavy trunk outside of his room. He raised his eyebrows. "What do you think you're doing?" he confronted her. Caroline whirled around, surprised.

"Oh, it's you! Is this your room?" Caroline said.

"Yes it's my room, so I'd appreciate it if you went away from the door." Tom said, coldly.

"Oh, I'm your roommate! You must be Tom. Mrs. Cole's told me that I would be your roommate. Nice to meet you, Tom!" Caroline smiled. Tom swept past her, opening the door noisily as a sign that he didn't appreciate in the slightest that she was his roommate. Carolines smile didn't falter, however; in fact, it didn't change at all. Caroline dragged her suitcase inside the room, gasping and panting heavily. As she finally got the suitcase into the room, she fell flat on the bed next to her. Tom looked shocked, then quickly gave her a withering look.

"That's my bed. Yours is the other one." Tom said, visibly annoyed. Caroline made an apologetic face towards him.

"Oh, sorry! Didn't know this was your bed, I'm really sorry." Caroline apologized, and hurried to drag her suitcase next to the other bed. Tom didn't care much about her efforts, but he wondered what could possibly be in the suitcase to be that heavy. As Caroline finally threw her suitcase on her bed, she opened the locks with a clicking sound and opened the suitcase. Tom was stunned. Inside Carolines suitcase was a number of books, all of which were the type that Tom preferred to read over fairy tales and children's books. Caroline happily beamed at her books, and noticed Tom's look as she turned around. Caroline glanced at Tom's tattered, dusty looking book and then her books. "You can borrow them if you want, you know. I like books. I crammed all of my favorites in my suitcase as left for the orphanage." Caroline said. Tom glared at her. Did she think that he could possibly ever need her books, her help? Tom felt angry, even though he knew that the truth was, Caroline genuinely didn't mind Tom borrowing her books.

"I don't need your books, I'm perfectly happy with my books without you interfering, thank you very much." Tom snapped. Caroline seemed a little offended, but didn't say anything.

"Alright, sorry if I offended you. I just noticed earlier that you were carrying that book around with you, and I thought you liked books a bunch. I'll leave the books here if you want to borrow them, and I don't mind if you keep them, too. I've read all the books in here a lot, so they're pretty boring for me now." Caroline said, and exited the room. Tom scoffed and continued staring at his book. He didn't need her books. As a few minutes passed, he couldn't help glancing at the books. They were so tempting, books he'd longed to read his whole life were waiting right next to him. Caroline wasn't here. She had said it was ok to read her books, even keep them. He looked around, and slowly reached for a small pile of books. He opened the cover of a book called A brief history of war, which had many detailed drawings of soldiers getting injured or killed in gruesome ways. He was fascinated. After an enjoyable half hour of reading through the book, Tom heard footsteps. A second later, Caroline entered the room again. Tom turned behind him.

"I'll keep these books, you said I could keep them if I wanted." he quickly said. Caroline looked happy.

"Sure!" Caroline exclaimed. Tom quickly took a pile of books and dumped it on his desk. Caroline laughed.

"You don't have to be so urgent, it's not like I can suddenly change my mind and take them back," Caroline smiled.

Tom was eating breakfast the next day. Caroline was sitting next to him. Over a single breakfast, Caroline had been ruled out as a weirdo like Tom by the other kids.

"Hey, freak, congratulations on getting a freak girlfriend!" a fat kid from another table jeered. He lumbered over to Tom with a group of his cronies. Tom ignored him. He was still in deep thought after yesterday's events.

It had been in the afternoon when it happened. Tom had successfully stolen a small watch from one of the kids, and had been cautiously coming back to his room, making sure nobody saw him. When he was passing by the bathroom, however, there was a scream of terror and a couple seconds later Billy ran out of the bathroom shrieking. After Billy had ran off, Caroline came out of the bathroom, snickering.

"That's the mens bathroom." Tom said.

"I know." Caroline replied.

Tom narrowed his eyes suspiciously at her. He didn't know why she had come out after Billy, snickering, or how she had caused that terror to Billy. He wondered if she was another not so fat version of Billy.

"What did you do to him?" he asked suspiciously. Caroline giggled.

"Oh nothing, I may have blew up a toilet or two, nothing serious, really." Caroline sarcastically said. Tom was still suspicious.

"How'd you blow up the toilets?" Tom pressed on.

"Dunno, weird stuff keeps happening around me. Not my fault, though. The decision to be a fat annoying twat, that's on him." Caroline shrugged. Tom's mind was racing. Up until now, he had been sure that he was the only one with such powers. Learning that someone else had the same powers was an incredible shock. After some proof that Caroline had powers like him by making her blow up a sink, he had been convinced enough. He was sure both of them were the only one with powers.

Now, as he was eating breakfast. After the toilet incident, Billy had decided to bully Caroline along with Tom. Billy lumbered over to them.

"Hey freak, good thing you got with Tom before any of us became friends with you, we would've become freaks too!" Billy stupidly laughed. Caroline abruptly stood up.

"Calling other people a freak of weirdo seems kind of rude, doesn't it?" Caroline smiled.

"Oh great," Tom thought, "what's she going to stupidly do now?"

"Get out of the way, freak, you don't want to mess with me." Billy jeered.

Caroline raised her eyebrows dangerously.

"What, are you going to fight me with chubbiness and fatness?" she snorted. Tom had to admit, although what she was doing was stupid, Caroline was brave. Maybe she wasn't so bad after all. Billy's eyes widened.

"Hey, I recognize your voice! HEY, YOU BLEW UP MY TOILET! I'M GOING TO-" what Billy was going to do to Caroline was crystal clear as he raised his fist. However, he never got to finish his sentence as he swung his fist at Caroline when Caroline promptly grabbed Tom's book and slammed his face with it. Billy stumbled backwards, and tripped flat onto his table, splattering himself with porridge. Billy shrieked as he clutched his bloody nose. Tom's book had a hint of blood on it, too.

"Never," Caroline snarled. Up until now, Tom had only seen the smiling part of Caroline. Although Tom wasn't easily scared, the dangerous look Caroline had right now spooked him. It was as the quote went, "Never test a patient man's anger", except it would have been "Never test a nice man's anger". Billy was scared more than Tom by the look on his face, and ran out of the room blubbering. Caroline sat back down returning to her happy face, and gave Tom's book back to him.

"Sorry about the book," Caroline apologized.

Tom didn't say anything. He was a bit mad about his book, but it had been an old one anyway. Besides, he had a pile of new books on his desk. Caroline quickly ate her porridge and excused herself. She had an indifferent face, aware of all the staring and whispering from the other children. Tom looked at his porridge. He realized he wasn't hungry anymore. He walked to his room and entered. Inside, Caroline was basking in the sunlight, on her bed. She turned her head at Tom.

"Sorry about that mess down there, suppose it was really stupid of me, wasn't it?" she said. Tom sat down on his chair. Caroline smiled slyly.

"Hey Tom, do you still hate me?" Caroline asked. Tom was surprised. How did she know he hated her? Was his look when she was first introduced that obvious?

"What do you mean?" Tom quickly asked.

"Well, judging by your behaviour to the other kids and to me, I think you hate everyone." Caroline smiled. Tom wondered how she could still smile after basically being told that he hated her for no reason at all. Tom looked away and gave a short answer.

"Guess you're not that bad."

Caroline broke into a wide grin.
