Shattered

The day started out okay for Shikamaru, although Temari was still angry at him for forgetting their anniversary. He planned to make it up to her just as soon as the trouble with Iwa was settled. Maybe he could get Shikadai to help him out, once the boy got back from his mission.

At the thought of his son, a sad smile graced his lips. The relationship between him and his son had been strained recently, a fact that troubled him greatly. He frowned, making the resolution that as soon as this Iwa problem was finished he was taking some time off to fix his family because that's all that mattered to him at the end of the day, his family and he be damned if he lost them.

Walking into his office, he put his family from his mind and began focusing on trying to come up with a solution that appeases the Daimyo of the land of Iron so they wouldn't attack the land of Flowers. Soon he got lost in his work doing what he did best, which was coming up with a plan. "Hmm, maybe we could create a new trade deal of some sort?" he thought.

It was as he was contemplating this that Naruto walked into his office, "Yo, Shikamaru, have you thought of how we can deal with Iwa yet?" he asked.

Shikamaru looked at him tiredly, "I have an idea but nothing concrete," he said.

Naruto looked at him sympathetically, feeling for his advisor; he knew the trouble with Iwa was affecting the man's home life, "Well, let's at least hear what you have so far," he said.

The shadow user sighed, "I'm thinking we could come up with a new trade deal; however, it would have to be between the Kumo and Iwa," he said.

Naruto nodded, "Perhaps we can negotiate something between all the villages, that way Kumo doesn't feel like they're being singled out," he said.

Shikamaru tilted his head in contemplation, "Hmm, that might just work. Give me an hour and I'll try to have something figured out," he said.

Naruto smirked and turned to leave, "I'll leave you to it then," he said.

For the next several minutes, Shikamaru went over every variable he could think of; he got so lost in thought that he was startled when Naruto walked back into his office. The shadow user looked at the clock on the wall and found twenty minutes had gone by. Turning back to his Hokage he gave the blonde an annoyed stare, "Naruto I said give me an hour," he said, not noticing the distressed look on Naruto's face.

The blonde looked at him sadly, "Forget about it Shikamaru and go home to your wife," he said.

The shadow user looked at him annoyed, "I can't just drop what I'm doing and go home Naruto," he said, not even wondering why the blonde was telling him to go home.

Naruto looked at him sternly, "No Shika, you need to go home to your wife. I'll meet you at your home shortly," he said.

Now Shikamaru was confused, "Why?" he asked.

Naruto wouldn't meet his advisor and long-time friend's eyes, "Just go home Shika, I'll explain everything later," he said, but Shikamaru wasn't having it.

Shikamaru looked at him in frustration, "No. I don't have time for these games, Naruto. The village depends-" he said but Naruto cut him off.

"Forget about the village!" he shouted.

Shikamaru was stunned by the blonde's outburst, why was Naruto acting like this he wondered? What was so important that he needed to go home? Then a thought clicked in his mind, Shikadai. Had something happened to his son?

Panic flooded Shikamaru as he stared up at Naruto, "What's happened to Shikadai," he asked.

Naruto looked uneasy, "I don't think this is the best place to tell-" he started but this time Shikamaru cut him off.

"Tell me, damn it! Has something happened to Shikadai?" he said, the normally calm Nara was now close to panicking.

Naruto sighed, "I'm sorry Shikamaru, the client that hired Shikadai and his team lied about the mission rank," he said.

Shikamaru looked stunned, "Lied about the rank? Shikadai and his team are only genins they're only qualified to do C-ranks, so what rank was the mission?" he asked.

Naruto sighed, "S," he said.

Shikamaru blanched, An S rank? His son who was barely a genin got sent on an S rank? "Naruto, are they okay," he asked.

Naruto shook his head, "The team was ambushed by rogue shinobi. Moegi tried to stop them but it wasn't enough, Shikadai and his team were forced to fight. Inojin is in a coma and ChoCho lost an arm," he said slowly.

Shikamaru felt like he was going to be sick, "and Shikadai?" he asked. He knew he should be worried about Moegi but he couldn't bring himself to care at the moment all that mattered to him was knowing about his son.

Naruto looked at him sadly, "Moegi is alright, but Shikadai- he took a hit for Inojin who was down. I'm so sorry Shikamaru, the hit, broke his back and neck, and he sustained a severe head wound. Shikamaru, Moegi called me. The doctors say it doesn't look good," he said.

Shikamaru looked like he was about to lose it, "What do you mean it doesn't look good? What are you trying to say," he asked.

Naruto put a hand on Shikamaru's shoulder, "Shikamaru, Shikadai is going to die," he whispered.
