It had been several months since Six had seen Mono. She sat in the Lady's chamber at the mirror. Her clothing was now a dull colored kimono, and her hair was still short, as she preferred it. She accepted her new role as the Mistress of the Maw, but managing the Maw and it's inhabitants did little to distract her from the sadness for the boy she had traveled with.. and been saved multiple times by. She never even learned the name of the boy who'd become her friend.

A bag with holes for the eyes sat on her table by the mirror. It was the same bag he'd worn over his face for most their time together. She'd found it laying near the Signal Tower. She'd also drawn several pictures of the boy, and hung them on the mirror. Every once and a while, she would cry in secret, due to regret, and wishing she could see him again. The Nomes that lived within the ship would bring her various foods, and she would treat the little creatures kindly, but even they could sense her sadness.

Every time the moon was full, she remembered the night she first saw him. He sat high in a tree, waiting for something, she guessed. Their eyes met, and they stared for moments until the Hunter interfered. And she was saved from the Hunter by this boy.

One night, while she was at her mirror, humming a tune to herself, she happened to glance up into the mirror and saw the image of the boy behind her. He had no bag, but he was just as she remembered him. Young, and wearing the same clothes that he did while she was with him. She closed her eyes, thinking it was just an illusion brought on by missing him until..

"Why did you do it?"

Her eyes widened and she stood up, spinning around quickly, which knocked the chair over to the floor.

"Why?" he asked, an expression of hurt on his face.

She rushed to him and threw her arms around him. He tried to raise his hands in protest, but she didn't care.

"I'm so sorry! The tower made me!" she sobbed out, head buried against his shoulder.

"The tower?" he asked.

"It is some kind of monster, and it wanted to keep you. When I tried to pull you up to save you, it took control of my body.. and I felt strange, like I suddenly didn't care for you.. and then I let you go.." she said, wiping a tear. "Then, the monster.. the tower.. made me leave against my will.. It felt like a bad dream where I couldn't control what I was doing. When I came out on the other side, I knew what I'd done.. I tried to go back into the tv set to get you, but the tv shattered.. and the tower.. that monster.. cursed me for trying to take you away from it.. I'm sorry."

"How did it curse you?" he asked, patiently waiting for an answer.

"Hunger pains.. but the curse isn't as bad as losing you. I really like you.. and I never said thank you for the times you saved me." She looked at his face. "You saved me.. but why did you let that man take me when we were hiding from him? I tried to get under the bed with you, but you didn't help.."

"I thought he was only after me.. I had no idea he would take you, or I would've helped you. I felt afraid and worried for you when he snatched you away.. When he took you, a glitch of you was left behind, and it lead me to the tower where you were. I destroyed the man with my own powers, and went into the tower to save you. I really grew protective of you."

"The tower wanted to keep you.."

"I know it did.." he whispered.

"How did you get here?" she asked.

"You know I'm able to travel through television sets.. right?"

She nodded.

"I scanned all the TV viewers through the television sets for months, looking for you. Then, I saw you, talking with a monster, and I discovered the TV that you were on the other side of was on the Maw. I thought long about coming to talk to you, but unsure if you still liked me, or even wanted to see me. I finally needed to know the answer.. Why you let me go.. So, I teleported through the TV to find you here."

She gave him a smile, and held him closer. "I'm glad you did."

He smiled, and laid his cheek on her head. They stayed like this for several more moments, then he remembered something.

"Wait.. I brought something for you.." he said, pulling away from her. "Wait here.."

She nodded.

He stepped outside the door, and returned a few seconds later, with a large object in his arms.

Six opened her mouth in surprise.

Mono held the music box. He smiled at her expression, bringing the music box to her. "I thought you might like to have this back. You like it.."

She nodded and turned the crank at the top. The music started playing. They smiled at each other, listening to the melody, and Six began to hum along with it.

Hearing the music from outside the door, some of the little Nomes came into the room, looking around for the source of music. Six sat the music box on the floor, and the Nomes gathered around it, interested. Six cranked the handle a few more times, then sat on her nearby bed, watching the music box and Nomes. Then, she looked over at Mono. "So.. what's your name?"

"Mono.. What's yours?" he asked, walking over to the bed.

"My name is Six."

"Six? What kind of a name is Six?" he asked with a confused smile.

She returned the smile, "What kind of a name is Mono?"

He gave a small chuckle, then sat beside her on the bed. It was the first time Six had heard hm laugh. She liked the sound.

"At least it's better than watch the other kids I was with called me.." Mono said.

"They called you what?" Six asked.

Mono pointed at the bag sitting on the dresser. "Baggie."

"Baggie?" she repeated, trying not to laugh.

"Yes, but please don't call me that."

Six nodded, still smiling.

The two watched the Nomes chattering over the music box, and when the music ended, they turned the crack again to restart the melody.

"Did you have trouble finding me?" Six asked. "The Maw is very large."

"It is.. but the Nomes knew where you were, and they lead me to you. I would've had a harder time if it weren't for them. They guided me through secret tunnels to avoid the monsters on this ship."

Six reached over and placed her hand on his. "I'm happy you came back to find me. I missed you."

"Missed you, too." Mono smiled, before placing his hand to his mouth and yawning. "I'm tired. I didn't realize how tired I was until I actually took time to relax."

"It's almost midnight.." Six said, and looked over at the pillows on the large bed. "You can sleep if you like.."

"I would like." He whispered, the tiredness showing in his voice.

Six nodded, and crawled over to the pillows. She laid down as Mono crawled over beside her, and laid down. They laid on their sides, facing each other. Six closed her eyes, and began softly humming along to the music box's melody. Mono reached out his hand, and moved some of her dark hair out of the way of her brown eyes so he could see them.

She continued to smile, then a thought crossed her mind, and she looked at him, concerned. "Are you hungry? There's plenty of food on this ship.. I can have the Nomes bring you food.. or water."

"No.. I'm fine." Mono whispered, relaxing more.

Six smiled, and closed her eyes, only to open them moments later. "Will you be here when I wake up, Mono?"

"If you want." Mono said.

"I do want."

Mono smiled, and nodded, "I'll be here."

Six closed her eyes, comforted by his reassurance. They laid there in silence, enjoying each other's company, and soon, Six slowly drifted off to sleep, her breathing now slow and steady. Mono smiled, admiring her cute face, then leaned over and gave her little nose a kiss, then whispered, "Good night.."

"Good night," Six whispered so low that he barely heard her.

Mono looked over at the Nomes. "Hey.. can you dim the lights of this room?"

The Nomes nodded as Mono turned to face Six again. Moments later, the light went dim to almost dark. Mono closed his eyes, completely content, and soon followed his friend off to sleep.
