Okay enough was enough!
She had officially had just about as much as she could take and more. She had bit her tongue at points, agreed to go along with things and even accepted the depressingly acceptable outcome of her and Billy no longer having a future together but now seeing him huddled wet and in the arms of his ex-wife Jo. Dr. Melissa Reeves had just about all she could take!
She felt like doing something wild and impulsive. That would be out of character for her, and she suspected would make her feel better about herself right now.
All her life Dr. Melissa Reeves was considered the uptight one. She was asked to attend parties and gigs but rarely went choosing to spend her time studying. After a while people stopped asking so she just got on with her studies and earned her doctorate. There were moments when she found herself wishing she were tougher, wittier, more spontaneous and less rigid. She always had to have a plan or an idea of what to do the next day. She couldn't just cut loose and go with the flow… and now she had found herself with a bunch of adrenaline junkies who seemed to enjoy making it up as they went along. They claimed to be scientists but really, she thought they were thrill seekers. And to think that she used to think Billy was speaking in metaphors when he mentioned chasing tornadoes! She should hand back her license to practice medicine!
All she wanted was to get those divorce papers signed, and now she's stuck chasing tornadoes with her fiancé Billy or Bill as everyone seemed to call him and his estranged wife Jo. She hasn't caught up on what this little inadvertent trip down memory lane will entail. This was meant to be simple Billy told her, just say a quick hello and the papers would be signed. Yeah right! Which is why the same papers had not been signed for months! She could have stepped to Jo woman-to-woman. Scream at her, slap her silly, hate her and be a bitch to her but she didn't bother. She just didn't have the energy for that, what could that mean? She knew what it meant. The writing was on the wall. She patted herself on the back for that. Good for her for not wasting the energy, since clearly her man is still in love with his estranged wife. She also hated herself for it. Just once in awhile she wanted to get mad, to stop being so simple, uncomplicated and easy as she knew she has often been described in the past.
In some ways she admired Jo, the woman was on a mission to get that device Dorothy 1 off the ground and to get her man back. I guess that could be called multitasking. What made it more difficult was that Billy was so blatantly pulling away from her. She knew at the start he was uneasy at the idea of meeting up his old friends again and seeing Jo, but he had made it totally clear to her that this would just be a pitstop. A quick sign the forms, say hello and then leave. To see him so passionate when discussing tornados, so full of energy and purpose in a way she had never seen him before hurt. Not to mention hearing him basically declare his love for Jo over the radio. Yeah, that hurt. Imagine finding out that your fiancé is falling back in love with his estranged wife over a radio. Now imagine tornadoes touch down all around you as you find out your fiancé is falling back in love with his estranged wife while.
She could have left after, yet another tornado nearly killed them next to a drive-in screening of film 'The Shining'. Yet again they managed to escape death and even this one shook up the group of daredevils. Guess it was one thing to chase a tornado and another thing to get caught up on one. It was at that point that she decided that she was leaving Billy or rather Bill as she had now come to know him as. They had no future together. There had been doubts in the back of her head. Little alarm bells ringing in the background, they had been there for a while now, but she ignored them. Maybe they both had their doubts and were both both too scared, or too stupid to notice, or admit it. So, might as well be brave for once and admit it. Probably the bravest thing Melissa had done in her life so far. Ah who was she kidding? Anybody with eyes would see Bill and her were not meant to be! She was hardly brave.
She did stay with him and the others to see if Jo's Aunt Meg was alright when they learnt that the same tornado that devastated the film theatre, has destroyed her Aunt's town. I mean what kind of human would she be if she hadn't done that? The lady was thankfully wounded but alive, her house was a write off, however. Melissa hoped she had insurance.
She was tired, her nerves were shredded, and they had been chasing tornadoes for a full 24 hours. A truck had landed right in front of her while driving and it seemed that everyone particularly the one, they call Dusty enjoyed it when they were nearly killed. She had found herself spending a lot of time with Dustin "Dusty" Davis since Bill was off doing whatever he was doing with his estranged wife Jo up front in the convoy. Dusty part Yoda, part five-year-old child was one of the loudest, over the top people she had ever met in her life. Nothing seem bring down his mood or his lust for life. Melissa wished she had a little of that, the closest she had brushed with the law and death flying truck withstanding was when she paid her taxes and it when to the police.
She had to admire Dusty, however. It was entertaining the way he talked about… what was it again? 'The suck zone' yes that was it! He was clearly passionate and heavily into the topic. At first, she found him a little undisciplined and overwhelming, but he had kind of grew on Melissa. It was hard not to get taken in by his lust for life. He was the kind of guy her mother and her friends would not approve of. He's not what these girls consider eye candy, his fashion sense was awful, had pour manners plus he ate like a neanderthal. But still he had… like a subtle cuteness that… okay, not exploring that avenue of thought any farther. That way lies madness. Must refocus.
After attending to Aunt Meg, she found herself in the back of Dusty's van cutting Pepsi cans into shapes and helping attach them to the little balls or scientific devices that would be placed inside the Dorothy units… they didn't care what the others would say they just looked like Christmas decorations to her. Still, she was part of the team now helping them achieve the impossible. And it felt good like she was almost one of them rather than a spare part like she had been treated this whole time. She was once again working alongside Dusty, and she suspected that he had a little crush on her. He had been always making attempts to engage her in conversation, sitting next to her at breakfast at Aunt Meg's and had been sneaking looks at her figure this past 24 hours when he thought she wasn't looking. Reeves may not fit in the line of fire for the love of science, but it seemed her ass fit well enough in her business suit for Dusty to enjoy. It felt… nice if a little sleazily, she was happy at least one person thought of her as attractive woman on this trip!
She had watched open mouthed and heart pounding as Jo and Bill attempted to deploy Dorothy 3 over for it to fail when it is hit by an airborne tree. Then she watched alongside Dusty as Bill and Jo managed to out maneuverer a flying tanker-truck, farm equipment, and even a house that has been dropped onto the road by the massive storm. This one was what they call an F5 or rather 'The Finger of God' and Melissa knew then and there that Bill and Jo were made for each other as they were both as nuts as each other. Still, they managed to get Dorothy 4 into the eye of the storm! I mean from what she could see the two sacrificed Bill's Dodge by placing it on autopilot and driving straight into the tornado, so it was hardly the most scientific approach.
Then the group had found them all huddled together what used to be a water pump facility before the F5 tornado destroyed. The pair were alive which was great, but they were all touchy, feely, happier to in each other's arms than be happy to alive and clearly romantic eyed which is what caused Melissa to snap. Enough was enough! Something inside her wanted to do something wild, reckless and totally spontaneous and by god she was going to let it happen! Not fight it or talk herself out of it like she did so many times but embrace it.
She walked past Bill and Jo, straight up to Dusty planting a hard long kiss on the man whose eyes were open wide but quickly wrapping his arms around her and giving into the kiss. The others looked shocked, and Bill looked outraged. "Hey!" He yelled but stopped when he heard Jo clearing her throat next to him. Bill turned back to her and swallowed hard looking apologies at her. "Well… he didn't… ask first," he stuttered at the blond woman.
Melissa and 'Dusty' kissed long and hard wrapped up on each other. Open mouthed and hungry their hands gripping each other until oxygen became an issue and they broke apart. Melissa looked at Dusty's dazed expression on his face a slow and sultry smile appearing on hers. "What was that sign I caught on your truck? At the back right." She asked him seductively.
"What? Oh, 'if this truck is rocking don't come knocking!'" Dusty replied and then his eyes drew wide as he saw the expression on her face. He grew a grin from ear to ear. "Oh… cool! The wonder of nature, baby!" He laughed and she couldn't help but giggle too as she nearly rip Dusty's arm off tugging him along back down to where they parked the trucks. Dr. Melissa Reeves will not be wearing her ph. D in a few moments… or much of anything, for that matter, and neither will this storm chaser. She was suddenly filled with lots of ideas on how to let loose and have some fun.
"What?! Oh, come on!" Bill yelled clearly in discomfort and distress of the idea of Dusty and his now estranged fiancé hooking up.
"Sorry Bill but it's the extreme!" Dusty yelled back as he and Melissa ran off for Dusty's truck. It was more impulsive than extreme Melissa felt but then again, she didn't care too much. It was nice just to cut up and let loose every once in a while.
