Hey, so first of all this is my first time writing a fanfic so criticism will be appreciated, other than that, don't take this story too seriously I just made it because I had a dream a couple a days ago where Giga Cat Mario fought against the white whale and thought it would be fun to write.
I took some *creative liberty* with Cappy to give him a more distinct personality that can bounce with Subaru's. I do want to warn that the first 2 Arcs will be similar to the originals, but Arc 3 is where the story truly deviates. I also want to warn that some characters will die here, like permanently so If you want Subaru to be able to save everyone I'm sorry.
It was an average night like any other, the street lights illuminating the area with cars speeding through the roads while the stars shined brightly from above. In the sidewalk a spiky black-haired teen could be seen walking out of the convenience store with a plastic bag in his right hand.
That teen named Natsuki Subaru was nothing remarkable with the exception of his sharp eyes he inherited from his mother, normally they would be considered scary or at the very least a bit unsettling but looking closer you could tell his eyes held no light nor flame, holding nothing but emptiness and that could be said for his entire appearance, wearing a very clearly worn out and old orange stripped black & white tracksuit, his whole body radiated tiredness.
While walking home Subaru's vision started to become blurry. "Guess anyone would be tired after gaming for the entire day" he said as he wiped his eyes. Once he opened them, he encountered a sight that he was not expecting.
"…Huh?" Looking around Subaru was in the middle of a stone paved street with various stands selling items on the sides, what confused him the most though were the people who surrounded him.
People with dog ears, cat ears, bunny ears, tails, even humanoid lizards for christ sake! There was also the average looking human walking around though their hair colors were odd, blue, yellow, green, purple, orange, it seemed like they just picked colors from a rainbow.
Looking dumbfounded a wooden carriage being powered by what seemed to be an overgrown lizard passed by him creating a cloud of dust. This brought him back to reality as his eyes gained light once more.
"This stuff obviously isn't fake, which means…"
"I'VE BEEN SUMMONED TO A PARALLEL WORLD!?"
"Jesus Christ, scream louder see if you can pop my ears" a high-pitched voice said from the top of Subaru's head with clear annoyance in his voice.
"Eh?" Subaru said very clearly confused, a small weight from the top of his head lifted and a white top hat looking ghost appeared in front of him.
"My name is Cappy, I'm gonna be your partner during your time here so I would very much appreciate if you didn't scream at the top of your lungs without warning" said the ghost hat with a blank expression.
"Wait, Cappy? As in that hat from that one Mario game?" Subaru's excitement is going up 'an isekai fantasy adventure with a hat that can possess people is so cool" he thought as he looked at Cappy expectantly.
"Yeah, that one, look, I'll explain everything let's just… get out of the middle of the street, people are looking at me weirdly and it's pissing me off" Cappy looked around and saw the curiosity in the people's gazes. He started moving away from the scene and Subaru quickly followed.
"Basically, I'm here to help you out in whatever you want to do here…. And before you ask, yes you can possess people though for how long depends more on you than on me" Cappy was looking around from the top of Subaru's shoulder at the different stalls and people walking around, he was receiving some strange looks.
"Wait, what do you mean by that?"
"Well, exactly what I said, you can possess people who are weaker or a bit stronger than you for a certain amount of time, everyone else is immune"
"I guess that's fair, though I don't really know how strong the people he-" Subaru got interrupted by the scream of a woman.
"Someone help that child!" she screamed.
Looking to the right Subaru could see a small child huddled up in the middle of the street terrified as a carriage was coming full speed towards him.
Subaru quickly called out to Cappy "Yo, do something!".
Cappy quickly made his way to the kid and placed himself on his head. Subaru's vision became dark in an instant as he felt himself get pulled towards the kid.
He found himself on the hard floor surrounded by the screams of various people and the sound of the carriage quickly approaching, opening his eyes he realized what happened and swiftly rolled to the sidewalk just barely missing getting hit. Cappy got off from the head of the child and Subaru felt his vision darken once again then he appeared in front of the child.
'Jeez that discrepancy during possession is messing me up'
He crouched and asked, "Are you alright kid?" The child looked stupefied as he could not understand what just happened, even so he looked at Subaru.
"Y-yes I-I'm fine, thanks mister".
Subaru stood up and looked around he saw the same stupefied expression that the child had on everyone's faces, though looking to his left he could see a man wearing iron armor having a bit of disappointment in his eyes. Subaru smiled pointed at the sky and did his signature pose.
"My name is Natsuki Subaru!" Some people looked at him with admiration while others were trying to contain their laughter.
If Cappy had a mouth he would have the biggest shit eating grin in the world "He looks like such an idiot, this kid is going to be fun to be with" Subaru looked satisfied and started moving forward signaling Cappy to follow him which he quickly did.
"Did I look awesome?!"
"Yeah... pfft… you did" Cappy was trying to hide his laugh "Though you surprised me, you got ahold of the situation fairly quickly, to be honest I thought you were gonna get squished with the kid"
"Gee, thanks for the high expectations" grumbled Subaru.
Suddenly he felt something hit his leg turning around to see what hit him he witnesses a small green lizard with a big nose and belly wearing some orange shoes and wagging his small tail side to side.
"Oh shit, we left him behind and I forgot about him, that right there is your Yoshi, he will also help you out, right now he's a baby, but you can feed him some fruit, small animals or children to make him grow and be rideable!" Cappy's tone was full of enthusiasm
"Oh~ I see, wait, what do you mean we can feed him children!?"
Cappy started laughing "I was joking! Well, I mean he CAN eat children, but we won't feed him kids hahaha… Unless…"
"NO!"
"Putting aside whether we'll feed him children or not, we should feed him something, also I need to teach you about your power-ups…. Oh! Look!" Cappy said as he flew to a stall with different kinds of fruit. Subaru picked up the baby Yoshi and made his way to the stall.
There were various boxes that held various fruits on display like apples, bananas, grapes, melons, and peaches with a piece of paper that had symbols which Subaru couldn't read. The owner of the stall was a tall and very muscular man with green hair wearing a black bandana and an open vest which showed his muscles.
"Hey, kid" the man spoke and pointed to Cappy "Is this thing your spirit?" Cappy looked displeased at being called a thing
'Spirit?'
"Uh… Well, he's my partner, his name is Cappy, anyways, sir how much would-" he interrupted himself and turned to Cappy "How many apples would we need for Yoshi to grow?"
"Pretty sure you only need like 5"
"How much for 5 apples?" asks Subaru.
The man looked confused for a second then asked while pointing at the red circular fruits "Apples? Do you mean Appas?"
The baby Yoshi was practically drooling out the mouth while watching the "Appas". The man looked at the Yoshi intently, probably making sure it doesn't jump out of Subaru's grip.
'Ah shit, I can't read the language and the names of things here are different, this is going to be a pain'
"Yeah, that" answered Subaru
"10 copper coins" stated the man. Subaru grabbed his wallet pulled out some yen and offered them to the man "What currency is that? Eh, it doesn't matter you can't pay with that, so that means you are flat broke eh?" said the man looking slightly annoyed.
Subaru turned to Cappy, but he just shook his body and said, "Don't look at me, where would I even keep a wallet?"
The man grabbed Subaru by the collar "If you don't have any money then get the hell out of here! You're disrupting my business!" He let Subaru go and seeing he was not welcome he started walking away dejectedly while the baby Yoshi tried to jump out of Subaru's arms to go eat the fruit, unluckily for him Subaru's grip was not going to weaken.
Subaru and Cappy walked into an alley with a dead end and sat down "Well, that was a bust"
"People here keep calling me a thing or a spirit! Assholes, I'm tired of this shit I'm just going to hide on top of your head and act like a normal hat"
"Can you at least make it something that matches my outfit? I'd look like a fashion murderer with black clothes and a white top hat"
Cappy sighed, he transformed into a black and orange striped top hat and rested on top of Subaru's head.
Subaru smiled and pulled out some of his chips from his plastic bag "I don't suppose he can eat these can he?"
"Doubt it" answered Cappy.
Subaru sighed and opened the bag he hadn't noticed how hungry he was, he offered some to Cappy, but he just said "I don't have a mouth you know? Even if I did, I don't need to eat" Subaru then offered some to the baby Yoshi, but he just looked away with a groan of displeasure.
Subaru started eating his chips then remembered something, he turned Cappy.
"So, you mentioned something about power-ups earlier?"
Cappy looked at him weirdly and then blushed in embarrassment "Right! You can use various power-ups spanning the whole Mario franchise, if you say 'power-up' menu you can select between them"
Subaru started getting excited again "Power-up menu!" as he said that an image appeared in his mind showing various items from the Mario series. "You can choose which ever power-up you want, though they do have a cooldown"
Subaru picked a classic, the fire flower. The white of his tracksuit turned red while the black turned white, his orange stripes stayed the same.
"There's a cooldown?" asked Subaru.
"Yeah, for example if you switched from your fire flower to an ice flower you would have to wait 5 minutes till' you can use the fire flower again, different power-ups have different cooldowns, also if you get hit while using a power-up the cooldown will triple, there are also some power-ups than can stack like the double cherry or the super star"
Of course, if Subaru could pick, he would prefer to not have a cooldown at all, but still this was exciting shit. Subaru asks "So, how do I use the fire flower?"
"Just open your palms and imagine a ball of fire, that is how most of the power-ups work you just have to imagine what you want them to do, and they will activate"
"Alright, fantasizing is easy for a guy like me" says Subaru as he opened his palms and imagined fire, he then felt heat coming from his hand and a ball of flame appeared, the baby Yoshi was staring intently at Subaru's flame.
"I don't want you to accidentally kill someone and get sent to jail so throw it toward a wall" Cappy warned. Subaru listened and threw one to a wall.
The ball of fire bounced on the ground like a tennis ball until it hit the wall and disappeared, Subaru enjoyed that, it made him feel really good, so he just started going sicko mode on the wall throwing dozens of fire balls.
Cappy stepped in "Alright, that's enough Mr. Arsonist I don't want you burning down homes"
Subaru came back to his senses looked at the very burnt wall and smiled "My isekai fantasy is really shaping up!" the baby Yoshi looked excited and did a small roar? To be honest it sounded like a chicken getting strangled, but that won't stop Subaru's celebration, what did stop it was the voice of three men snickering behind him.
"Give us everything you got, and you won't get hurt" said the man in the middle of the three with a smirk on his face.
He had a skinny body with light blue hair, his tongue was weirdly long, and he had something strapped behind his back, but Subaru couldn't make it out. The baby Yoshi started growling.
Cappy immediately knew that this was trouble, so he started floating over Subaru's head and looked at them with cold eyes to see if he could intimidate them.
"Chin, are you sure about this? The kid has a spirit, and I don't even know what that green thing is" said the man to his left as he pointed at Cappy. He had a large body with purple hair and eyes, he had a mustache that made him look like a goofy villain in a fairy tale.
"I agree with Ton on this one, spirits are pretty dangerous" said the man to his right, he was noticeably short with brown hair stylized to look like a mushroom, his eyes were big too.
"It doesn't matter if he has a spirit! We are three and he looks weak as hell, the green thing could probably be squished by Ton's foot! We'll be fine" said the man in the middle apparently called Chin with annoyance in his voice.
Subaru however was not intimidated, he knew Cappy could probably possess them and even if he couldn't, he could still use the fire flower. His thoughts were interrupted when an exasperated voice rang out as someone ran into the alley. Everyone looked at the quickly approaching girl.
She was small but taller than mushroom head with short blonde hair. Her eyes were red, and she had a smirk on her face as if she were having fun, her clothes though were clearly old and not in good condition.
Witnessing what was going on in the alley the girl stopped for a second "Normally I would stay and watch how this would go down, but I don't have time" she started running "Try not to die scary eyed dude!".
If Subaru wasn't confident he could get out of this fight easily he might have gotten rather angry, but right now that didn't matter, he looked back at the three men opened his palms and let the balls of flame appear.
In that moment he could see the fear in their faces and the man in the middle took out some long knives from behind his back. Subaru became a bit unsettled at the sight of the knives and picked up the baby Yoshi putting him in his right shoulder to see if he would intimidate them
"Don't think that just because you can use fire magic we'll be scared of you assho-" Chin was interrupted as the voice of a girl was heard behind him.
"That is enough villains!"
Another girl ran into the alley, she was a bit shorter than Subaru but not by much with long silver hair and a face that was round and cute with amethyst-colored eyes. Her clothes looked way better than anything that Subaru had seen since he got here, it was colored white with a bit of purple sprinkled and she had a green crystal as a necklace. If Subaru had to summarize her appearance in one word it would be "angelic". Subaru started blushing slightly
"Give back what you stole, and I'll let you go" she said as icicles appeared above her head and started pointing at the three men.
Seeing as he was quite literally surrounded Chin started sweating bullets "Wait wait wait! We'll stop just please don't kill us!"
He looked at the girl and back to Subaru, defeated he started walking away with his two friends. Subaru gave a sigh of relief and the baby Yoshi stopped growling, Cappy was still on edge though.
"Why are you walking away? Give me back my insignia, please it's very important" The girl narrowed her eyes at the three men.
"Insignia? What insignia? We haven't stolen anything from you lady, didn't you come to help back up the kid?" Chin pointed towards Subaru.
"What strange clothes he has, and I don't recognize that green creature… wait did you say you didn't steal my insignia?" she asked with a bit of skepticism in her voice.
"We haven't stolen anything lady! That was what the kid was for!" Chin just wanted to leave.
"I can see that you aren't lying, even so you shouldn't steal you know?" The girl said in a very motherly tone. Chin just sighed and said, "We're sorry ma'am" finally being able to leave with his crew.
Subaru seeing this stopped the flames and Cappy let out a sigh of relief. Subaru sat down tired and Cappy did the same though on the top of Subaru's head.
"Jeez, not even two hours in and we already got mugged, you have terrible luck Subaru" said Cappy. Subaru just responded with a "yeah yeah" and looked back at the woman who was approaching him.
"Thanks for the backup, I was getting kinda stressed there" Subaru said with a smile, the girl just narrowed her eyes and asked, "Do you have my insignia?"
Subaru looked at Cappy and seeing his clueless look he said "Sorry, I haven't seen anything resembling an insignia, though a blonde-haired girl did come running through before you, if it's important to you we can help you find it"
"I don't have anything to offer you in return though" she said dejectedly.
"Hey, relax we don't need anything, we just don't really have anything better to do" Cappy said coming in as a wingman, he could tell Subaru wanted to speak more to the girl and someone with his personality was sure to be interesting to watch flirt.
"Yeah, what Cappy said, we don't need a reward, think of it as thanks for backing us up" said Subaru his blush was still not gone, and he really wanted to talk to this girl more.
"I'm not sensing any malice Lia, pretty sure you can take them up on their offer" said a small floating cat as he exited the small green crystal in the neck of the woman and floated towards Subaru.
Seeing an opportunity to pet top class fur he reached out and started petting the head and belly of the magical cat. "Woah, you're way cuter than the whiny hat will ever be" This truly was top class fur.
"Hey dude, I'm helping you out here and that's what you're gonna say about me? Fuck you" Cappy clearly did not appreciate being disregarded like that.
"Well, you laughed at me when I introduced myself on the street and thought so little of me that you thought I was going to die 30 minutes into the new world so yeah, fuck you too" grumbled Subaru.
The baby Yoshi growled at Subaru and looked pleased when Subaru started petting him "Don't worry you're cute too y'know?" the cat laughed a bit and started floating back to the woman "Yup, no malice, just a bit of brotherly fighting"
The woman looked a bit nervous and said "I really have nothing to give you" as she extended her hand and Subaru took it.
"No problemo, just want to help… actually we haven't introduced ourselves, have we?" he then pointed to the sky and did his signature pose and once again Cappy barely contained his laughter.
"My name is Natsuki Subaru, I'm flat broke, don't know where I am and don't know how to read nice to meet you!"
The woman looked a bit concerned at his introduction and the cat just had a smile. Cappy introduced himself next.
"The name is Cappy, I'm the idiot's partner, I also have the same circumstances" he grumbled the last part.
The cat was next saying "I'm Puck nice to meet you!" he extended his small paw towards Subaru which he grabbed with his fingers and shook with a smile.
Subaru then looked at the girl excited to know her name, she looked hesitant, but ultimately opened her mouth and said "My name is… Satella"
"Satella huh? That's a pretty cute name" said Subaru which surprised Satella while Puck just shook his head and whispered "You have terrible taste"
Cappy found one thing odd though "You called her Lia before right Puck? Where the hell do you get Lia from Satella?".
Subaru found it odd too but decided not to question it as he didn't know if it was personal or not, seems like Cappy didn't give a shit though.
Satella seemed startled and started getting nervous saying a lot of "Uh's and Ah's"
"Just give it up Lia, it's clear they're not getting fooled" Puck had a hint of disappointment in his voice.
"A-alright, I'm sorry, my real name is Emilia, just Emilia" said Sate- I mean Emilia shamefully.
"And another cute name!" Subaru would have said that even if she said her name was Hitler.
"Well, let's get looking then… actually the clothes of the girl were kinda tattered and cheap, do you know of a place where a lot of poor people hang out in?" asked Cappy.
"You don't sugar coat it at all do you?" said Subaru Cappy really didn't care how badly he sounded.
"-The slums, it's about an hour from here" said Emilia
"An hour huh, jeez that is pretty far, we should probably get moving then" Subaru picked up the baby Yoshi and started walking out the alley when he got interrupted by Cappy.
"Subaru, what are you doing?"
"Huh? What do you mean? We're walking to the slums, no?"
Cappy looked at him as if he was stupid "Did you forget you can use power-ups? There's some that can make you fly you know?
"Oh, right hehe…" he laughed nervously. Puck decided to speak up "Power-ups?"
"Uh, yeah, I think it'd be easier to just show you, say Cappy can I share my power-ups with other people?"
"Nope, I don't know how I know, but If someone touches your power-ups something bad will happen" Cappy warned.
"I see… Power-up menu" he says as he looks through his item menu. He finally makes a chooses the 'P-Wing' which could make him fly infinitely. As he picks the item a white wing with a red P in the middle shoots out of Subaru and slowly falls towards him. Subaru quickly grabs it.
Subaru's tracksuit returns to its original colors though a big red 'P' appears in the middle. Subaru could feel a new limb just above his ass, looking at his back he could see a cylindrical looking black and brown striped tail which he could move at will.
"This is so fucking cool!" he thought. He grabbed Cappy from the top of his head to see if he changed too, Cappy looked displeased though "O-Oi! don't grab me without telling me first! Yes, I change with you" Subaru could clearly see the small brown racoon ears on top of Cappy's head.
The baby Yoshi fell asleep sometime during this, which Subaru thought was cute. Satisfied Subaru looked back at Puck and Emilia only to see dumbfounded expressions which he probably should have expected.
"So, uh yeah, I have some abilities that I can choose from, this one makes able to fly and hit things with my tail" he explained sheepishly.
Emilia looked at him with a weird expression and asked "Subaru… are you a demi human too?"
"Huh? No, I'm a regular human, my power's just change my appearance so I can use them, wait you're a demi human? You look pretty human to me" He narrowed his eyes at Emilia trying to see anything that was out of place for a human other than the hair color and angelic beauty.
"I-I am a half-elf" She sounded quite nervous, though Subaru couldn't understand why.
"Oh~ I see, no wonder you looked so cute, Elves are always beautiful right?"
'Holy shit, he just- damn alright gotta give him props for that one' thought Cappy.
"Eh?" was the only sound Emilia produced as she looked at Subaru as if he grew a second head. "What?" he asks
"What do you mean 'What?', I just told you I'm a half-elf" she stated flatly.
"Yeah, I heard you" Subaru really didn't understand what was so weird about it, 'Shoot, am I overwhelming her? Am I talking too much? Jeez, my high-school insecurities are coming back!'
Puck looked at Subaru with an incredibly grateful expression 'Huh? Is he one of those people that love their friends getting complimented to hell and back? Maybe I didn't mess up'
Emilia continued to stare at Subaru looking for any deceit in his eye's and when she found none a blush came to her face and Subaru could tell her eyes started to water ever so slightly. "Subaru you're such a dunderhead!"
"Dunderhead? Who even says that anymore?"
'WHO HAS EVER IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND SAID DUNDERHEAD UNIRONICALLY' thought Cappy, normally he wouldn't give a shit if he sounded rude, but he wanted to let Subaru have the moment.
"Well, anyways" Subaru began "We need to hurry up and catch up to the thief so…" he grabbed the baby Yoshi and carefully placed him inside his plastic bag as to not wake him up, he then put the bag on his neck and extended both of his hands towards Emilia "Grab on and let us get flying"
Emilia grabbed both of his hands and Subaru picked her up in a bridal carry, she was surprisingly light.. He jumped and quickly started wagging his tail up and down so he could continue gaining altitude.
Emilia was caught off guard with the feeling of flying, but the ascent was consistent, so she got used to it quickly. Puck just went inside of the green crystal on Emilia's neck.
"Hey Emilia, can you point towards the slums?" Subaru asked, Emilia quickly pointed with her leg and they started flying in that direction. They were high enough that no normal person would be able to notice them, and they had a good view of the ground.
No normal person was supposed to be able to notice them, but this red-haired knight was anything but normal. Imagine this man's surprise when he looked up during his patrol- I mean "stroll" in the capital and saw a flying demi human teen with odd clothes carrying a silver haired woman in his arms while they head towards what seemed to be the slums.
Reinhard was way too confused to just walk away, so he followed them from below, it wasn't his curiosity winning over him! It's just that it would be incredibly irresponsible of him as a knight if he didn't at least make sure they didn't get into trouble.
