"Jackson!" Ben yelled as he walked out of his bedroom.
Ben and his son, Jackson, lived in an upscale apartment on the upper west side of New York City. Well, it was more like a penthouse than an apartment. It was a 5 bedroom, and 3 bathroom penthouse on the top floor with its own patio/balcony. Ben was young. Too young to be having the lifestyle that he had, with being a single dad, but he worked harder than anyone to get where he was, with the help of his parents.
"Jackson, buddy," he called again. "We gotta go," he said as he walked into their living room and found his son frustrated, trying to tie his shoes.
Ben smiled as Jackson huffed, but continued to attempt at tying his shoe.
"You need some help there, buddy?" Ben asked, making Jackson look up at his dad.
"Yeah," he sighed as he let his laces fall to the side of his shoes. "I can't do it," he said.
Ben walked over and took a seat in front of Jackson.
"Well, you did a good job so far," as he picked up Jackson's laces. "You just have to make the bunny ears, then loop one through the rabbit hole," he said as he tied Jackson's shoes.
"You're good at everything, dad," he said as he looked at his shoes.
"I'm not good at everything," Ben said as he stood up and held his hand out for Jackson.
"Yes, you are," he said, making Ben laugh. "You're the best dad ever!"
"What about papa?" Ben asked as he helped Jackson put his coat on.
"Papa is the best papa, but he is your dad, not mine," he said, making Ben laugh again.
Ben knelt down and zipped up Jackson's jacket and noticed the pout of his face.
"What's wrong?" Ben asked.
"Why can't I stay with grammy at the library?" Jackson asked.
"I know you don't want to find a new nanny after the others, but grammy can't watch you and do her job at the library, and papa and I have to be at the office," he explained. "Plus school is going to be starting soon, and I am going to need help getting you there and back," he added.
The past nannies that Ben had hired to take care of Jackson had not worked out, and that would be saying it lightly. At first they were great, but as time went on, they got used to the upper west side lifestyle and wouldn't take their job seriously. They would call out for 'being sick' then be seen on social media hanging out with their friends or people they got to know while having the job. It made Ben and his parents frustrated, because they were hired to watch Jackson, not to take advantage of the luxuries of having a wealthy boss.
"But, none of them like me," Jackson said. "They always go away."
Ben never told Jackson why the nannies left, and he now regretted it, because now he thinks they didn't like him.
"No, buddy," Ben said as he pulled Jackson in for a hug. "Dad just didn't like the way they worked. He wants someone who is going to take care of you. I promise, it was not because they didn't like you," he finished as he pulled away.
Jackson nodded his head and put a smile on his face.
"Now, come on. We have to go interview a nanny," He told Jackson as he opened their front door.
Father and son walked down the street to a nearby cafe where his friend Jane worked, and where they were going to meet the girl who was going to interview to be Jackson's nanny. When they got there, there were more people there than usual, making Ben groan a little. He was hoping that it wouldn't be hard to find this girl, but with all of these people it may be harder than he first anticipated. Ben scanned the area trying to find a small table and luckily he was able to spot one in his friend's section of the cafe.
"Jackson, you see auntie Jane over there?" Ben asked as he pointed to Jane. "There is an open table in her section. Go up to her, say hello, give her a big hug and have her sit you at the table okay," he said.
"Okay, dad," Jackson said as he ran toward Jane's section.
Ben watched as Jackson tugged on Jane's apron. She turned around as beamed at Jackson before bending down to give him a big hug. Jane was the owner of the small cafe, but acted and worked like any other employee. She had worked in this cafe when she was in highschool and when the original owners retired; they gifted it to Jane. She always wanted to buy it because she loved the place so much, but knew she wouldn't be able to afford it and go to school at the same time. When she graduated college with her business degree, the owners handed her the keys as a graduation present.
Ben ordered his coffee, a hot chocolate for Jackson, and two muffins.
When he finished and paid, he walked to where Jackson was supposed to be sitting, but he wasn't there. He panicked. He turned to see if he could see Jane, but saw she was cleaning a table, and Jackson wasn't with her.
"Jackson!" he said as he looked all around the cafe.
He looked toward the window and saw Jackson standing next to a table, talking to a woman about his age and a little girl. He sighed in relief and ran toward his son.
"Jackson," he said, making Jackson look up at him. "Don't do that. You can't run off and not tell me where you are going, or auntie Jane after she sat you down," he said as he pulled Jackson in for a hug.
"I'm sorry, dad. I just saw her drawing and wanted to tell her how much I liked it," he said as he pointed to the sketchbook on the table.
"Okay, but you scared me," Ben said as he pulled away and stood up. "I'm sorry," he said as he turned to the woman sitting with the little girl.
He stopped and noticed how pretty she was. She had pale skin, plump pink lips, purple platinum hair, and gorgeous emerald green eyes. She smiled at Ben and shook her head.
"No, it's okay," she said. "He wasn't bothering us."
"Dad, look at her drawing," Jackson said enthusiastically. "It's so pretty."
Ben smiled and looked down at the sketch. He had to admit his son had an eye for art. The drawing was beautiful. It was a drawing of a lake. It had a waterfall in the background and ruins on the outskirts of the water. The colors on the page made it seem as though you could dive into the drawing and be there in person.
"Yeah, it is very pretty," Ben said as he looked back at the woman.
"Thank you," she said with a small smile and blush.
"What about mine?" the little girl said as she held up her little sketchbook up to Ben, making him chuckle.
"Well, let's have a look," he said as he crouched down and took the sketchbook out of her hand.
The page was covered in scribbles, making Ben remember when Jackson was this little and scribbled crazily.
"This is beautiful," Ben said, making the little girl giggle. "Just as pretty as your sister's."
"That's not my sister," the little girl said. "That's my mommy."
Ben looked at the little girl in shock. He didn't expect that they would be mother and daughter. She looked too young to be a mother, but who was he to judge he was 26 years old with a 6-year-old.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I just assumed…" he started.
"It's okay," the woman said. "We get it all the time, but I bet you guys get it too," she said, making Ben nod his head.
"Yeah," he said, and then took Jackson's hand. "I'm sorry again for disturbing you and your time together," he said.
"It's okay," she said as she shook her head again. "We're just waiting here, because I have an interview."
"Oh," Ben said. "You're Mallory Drakos?" he asked.
"Mr, Anderson?" she asked, making him nod and hold his hand out to her. "I am so sorry," she said. "That was not how I thought meeting you was going to go."
Ben shook his head and smiled. "No, it's fine," he said with a smile on his face.
"Here," she said as she stood up. "Have a seat. Melody, please come sit by me," she said as she gestured for Ben and Jackson to sit down.
Melody stood up and walked over to a seat next to her mother. Ben and Jackson sat down as Mal fixed Melody's dress.
"I am sorry that I had to bring my daughter," she said. "Usually my sister would watch her, but she is out of town on business," she apologised.
"No. No," Ben said. "It is completely fine," he said as he turned to Melody. "It's very nice to meet you, Melody," he said, making Melody blush. "Do you mind if I ask your mommy a few questions?" he asked.
Melody nodded her head and went back to her coloring. Jackson started to twiddle with his thumbs until Mal passed him her sketchbook.
"Here," she said. "You can color in my book," she said with a smile.
Jackson smiled brightly at Mal's actions and thanked her. Before Ben could start asking her questions, Jane walked up with a tray in her hand.
"Sorry for interrupting, Ben," she said as she started to put their order on the table. "I have your and Jackson's order, and I'm sorry, miss, you had a hot royal English breakfast tea latte, a hot chocolate and two scones right?" she asked.
"Yes, I was waiting for them to call my name…" Mal started.
"No, no worries," Jane said, cutting her off. "I'll go and grab that for you, and I'll be right back," she said as she placed Jackson's hot chocolate and chocolate chip muffin in front of him.
"Thank you," Mal said with a smile.
"Thank you, auntie Jane," Jackson said as he reached for the muffin.
Ben pulled the plant from Jackson, making him look up at his dad.
"That one is mine," he joked. "Auntie Jane gave you my muffin. Yours is the blueberry," Ben said, making Jackson give him a gross look.
"Blueberries are gross, dad," Jackson said as he pulled the muffin back from his dad and licked the top of it. "But now this is mine," he said.
"Just because you licked it, doesn't mean I won't eat it," Ben said, making Jackson and Mal laugh.
Jane came back and placed Mal's tea latte, Melody's hot chocolate, and their scones.
"Okay, that's it," Jane said. "I won't interrupt you anymore," she said with a smile as she walked away.
"Okay," Ben said as he turned his attention to Mal. "I have a couple, actually more than a couple, of questions. If that's okay with you, Mallory?" he asked.
"I wouldn't be here otherwise," she said, making him laugh. "And please, you can just call me Mal."
Ben smiled at her as he nodded his head. "Okay, so the first question is a very obvious one," Ben said. "Why did you apply for the position?"
"I applied, because I have been a nanny since I was 18, but it was harder to find a nanny position after I had Melody," she said as she brushed some of Melody's hair out of her face.
"Why is that?"
"Many of them thought that I wouldn't take my responsibilities seriously and that I would take care of Melody more than I would their child, and they didn't want me to neglect them," she said.
"Have you been hired since having Melody?"
Mal nodded her head. "Yeah. I just finished nanning for a family."
"Why did you leave?"
"Their mother quit her job and decided to be a stay at home mother," she said. "They were an amazing family."
"Well, I don't have a problem with Melody being around," Ben said with a kid smile. "How old is she?"
"She's 5, and is turning 6 next week," she said.
"Well, Jackson here is tuning 7 in 2 months," Ben said. "I miss the baby stage though."
"Oh, I loved the baby stage. Melody was an absolute dream baby," Mal said.
The two started to get off topic, talking about their kids.
"Yeah, I had Melody when I was 21," Mal said with a bright smile.
"I was 20 when Jackson was born," Ben said.
"If you don't mind me asking? Where is his mom?"
Ben pressed his lips into a hard line and took a breath.
"She actually died of a drug overdose when Jackson was 5 months old," Ben said as he hung his head.
He hated that Jackson was growing up without a mother, but she wasn't the best person Ben had ever met. Mal reached across the table and took his hand, and he looked up to meet her sorry expression.
"I'm so sorry," she said.
"No," he said, shaking his head.
He looked at Jackson and now saw that Melody was sitting in the same chair and they were watching a movie on Mal's phone, and sharing a pair of headphones.
"Katherine and I were only together one time, when we were in college," he explained. "We were both at a party, and I am not proud to say that we both were drinking, but one thing led to another, and two months later she found me in the library and told me she was pregnant," he said. "After that she got really depressed because, and I didn't know it at the time, but she was doing a lot of drugs and when she was 6 months pregnant she started seizing and her heart stopped," Ben said, making Mal cover her mouth in horror. "They had to take Jackson out because he was going to die. They took him out and he was the tiniest thing ever. His foot was smaller than the pad of my pinky."
"He's okay now though right?" Mal asked as she looked at Jackson. "He doesn't have any complications?" She asked worriedly.
"No," Ben said, shaking his head. "Thankfully he was fine other than being premature. I don't know what I would have done if something had happened to him. He only has a severe allergy to peanuts," he said.
"Oh," Mal sighed in relief. "Thank god."
"Yeah," Ben said as he smiled down at his son. "When she was able to leave the hospital she stayed with my parents and I for a while, and then one night she left. We didn't know where she was. We asked around to see if anyone knew or saw her, but no one did and she didn't have any family. She took my wallet with her, and that's how they found me," he said. "It was in the middle of the night and there were two cops at the door. They told me that they found a woman and she had my wallet on her person, so they needed me to see if I could identify her. When I got there, they showed me her, and she looked so different. She didn't look like the girl who carried my son," he said.
Mal reached and took his hand again, making him look at her.
"I'm sorry. You must have loved her a lot," she said.
Ben shook his head again. "No," he said. "Like I said, we had only been together the one time, and she was pregnant with my baby. My parents took her in because they wanted to make sure he was alright," he said.
"Oh," Mal said.
"Yeah, but what about Melody's dad?" He asked, making Mal go stiff. "What does he do?"
"I… um…"
Ben felt a tug on his sleeve, making him look to see Melody looking up at him. He smiled down at her. She was so cute. She had light brown hair, emerald green eyes, a cute button nose, and dimples.
"I don't want my daddy," she said as she gave Ben the cutest mad look he had seen.
"Melody," Mal said in a slightly scolding tone.
Melody just shrugged and walked back to sit with Jackson, making Ben laugh.
"I am so sorry," Mal started to apologize.
"No," Ben said. "That was cute, but if you don't mind me asking," he said, putting a little bit of emphasis on 'me' and making Mal laugh. "Why doesn't she want her dad?"
Mal sighed. "It's a long story, but to sum it up. He was my boyfriend through high school, and when we were 20 I got pregnant, and he signed all of his parental rights over to me. He said he didn't want to be a dad at 20, and that I was…" she started, but looked back at the kids to see if they were paying attention, and luckily they weren't. "I was stupid to not get it… taken care of," she said. "After that I didn't want Melody around him, but for the past year he has been trying to get in contact with me because he wants to meet her. She cries and screams when I tell her, because, and I quote 'I don't like him. He hurt my mommy'," she finished, making Ben look at her with a confused look.
"What do you mean by hurt?" He asked, making Mal freeze again.
"Oh… um… it was… he was abusive," she whispered. "I hid it from my dad, but after I found out I was pregnant and he signed his rights over I told my dad everything," she said.
"I'm sorry," Ben said.
"It's okay. He wants to meet her now, but I'm not going to let him if Melody doesn't want to meet him," she said.
Ben nodded his head. He didn't know her well, but he could tell Mal was a great mom.
"I'm sorry," she said, making Ben break his thoughts. "I think we got off track."
"Right," Ben said as she shook his head and laughed. "Well…"
"Dad," Jackson said, making Ben look at him. "I like her!" He said excitedly.
Ben laughed. "Well, I was going to offer her the job, if you would have let me finish," Ben said as he started to tickle Jackson.
Mal laughed at the two's interaction. Ben must be a great dad, and that was hard to come by when they're a single parent.
"That's great, but what would my rolls be?" She asked. "I have had different rolls when nannying and I am capable of doing basically everything," she said.
"That's great! Um. Basic roles like taking him to school, picking him up, maybe if you could go grocery shopping. I work long nights sometimes, but…" he went on.
"I get the picture," she said with a chuckle. "When would you want me to start? I just have to make arrangements for Melody and then…" she said, but Ben cut her off.
"I forgot to mention that the position is for a live-in nanny, didn't I?" He asked, making Mal nod her head. "Do you still want the position?" He asked.
"I would leave the job, but I can't leave my daughter with my dad overnight beca…"
"Melody would come with you," Ben said before Mal could finish her sentence. "I of course would never want you to leave Melody, and my place has 5 bedrooms. Melody can have her own room…" Ben went on, making Mal look at him with an awed expression.
"Well, that sounds great," Mal said. "But I have Melody enrolled in kindergarten, and…"
"I will gladly pay for Melody to go to the same school as Jackson," Ben said. "It's not far from my place, and if I am honest," Ben said as he leaned in close. "I like you and so does Jackson. We have been doing interviews and he has never said that he has liked someone. So, if you would like and agree, I would love to give you the job."
"That is an amazing offer, but I feel that it is too much," she said. "You would be paying me, letting me live there, and for my daughter to go to school."
"Mal. I understand that it seems like much, but it's not. I promise. If you want you can pitch in for groceries, clean up, make food, or whatever, but I would still like to offer you the job," he said.
Mal thought about it for a minute. She knew it was an offer she should not refuse, but it seemed too good to be true. She looked at Melody and Jackson and saw how much fun they were having, and made her decision.
"Okay," she said with a smile. "I would love the job," she said as she reached her hand out.
Ben smiled brightly at her, and shook her hand. "Great!"
"Yay!" Jackson yelled as he started to jump up and down.
He ran around the table and threw himself at Mal, squeezing his arms around her neck. Mal laughed and hugged the 6-year-old. She was excited for this opportunity and was happy that Ben gave it to her, but she didn't know how much this job was going to change her life.
