I read Chapter 139 and I'm sad af. Such a beautiful ending, will talk about it in my authors note for See You Later, Eren Chapter 5. For now, this is just a quick one-shot produced in my sorry state that I thought would definitely happen after the end of the series, review if you like it! -Y
Ymir scrunches her small blonde brows, squinting at the words.
"here fo... forever, taking a nap, rest, uhh," she finds her efforts manifesting from her lips as she tries to form the sentence, squinting further at the big word.
"rest... pees-ful-lee. my most... bee-loved?" she isn't quite sure what that one means. Does it have something to do with love? Why's the "be" there?
"dear one." she finishes. She lets the birds' quiet chirps fill her ears as she rereads the text silently, making sure she got everything right.
The small rock that's sat by the tree for as long as she can remember used to be an enigmatic shrine. The tree, the hill, pretty much the entirety of Aunt Mika's back yard was cloaked in a veil of mystery. Being the crazy little girl she was, she would try to sneak out to look at the rock whenever she got the chance, and it always seemed strangely tranquil. She liked it there. Which was too bad, because for some reason her aunt never liked her going back there. She tried telling her mommy to let her go, because mommy was a queen, which means Ymir was a princess, and they could do whatever they wanted to, right?
But no, mommy always said it was Aunt Mika's decision, which seemed weird. Now there was a place that not even her mommy and daddy got to choose whether she could see, and of course that was the one place she was most interested in seeing.
So when Aunt Mika finally said yes on her fifth birthday, she was more than excited to see it with her family. Although, the main thing that caught her interest was the words carved into the rock that sat there. She was learning to read, you see, and she thought she was pretty good at it, too, so she became fixated on wanting to know what it said.
And here she sits, cross legged, back hunched over and chin in her hands, trying to decipher the message.
Here forever, taking a nap.
Rest peacefully,
my most beloved dear one.
That's definitely what it says, though it's meaning is lost on her. Who's taking a nap exactly? She sure doesn't see anyone around here...
"Ymiiir!" the faraway voice of her aunt can be heard, "lunch is ready!".
But Ymir doesn't really feel like moving, she feels like thinking. Maybe it is the flowers that are taking the nap? After all, flowers die, but every time she visits the rock, there seems to be a new set of them. Sometimes they were red, sometimes they were bright blue, sometimes they were purple, but they were always fresh.
She hears light footsteps approaching behind her. The figure of her aunt is now by her side, looking at her inquisitively. Ymir always thought Aunt Mika was very pretty, with soft black hair, nice grey eyes, and a nose that Ymir liked to boop a lot. She also had a scar that made her look really cool. She wore a simple orange dress with a white button-up shirt, and even though mommy tried to make her dress like a princess, which she was happy to do some of the time, she always secretly wanted to be able to dress like Aunt Mika all the time. Except the red scarf she always wore, which Ymir didn't think would be very comfortable in the summer time.
"Aren't you hungry?" she asks as she kneels down to face Ymir at eye level.
"Yeah, but what does peesfulee mean?"
The questioning curve of her brow suddenly lifts, and she looks at the rock, where the words are. After a second of looking she turns back to the six year old.
"Peacefully?"
Ymir nods her head.
"Well... that means that there's nothing to worry about." she says, elaborating further after some silence. "you know when you fall asleep, but you get a nightmare?"
Ymir's expression slightly shifts at the reminder of the nightmares she would frequently get. She remembers the day Aunt Mika told her that she gets nightmares too, and that made her feel so warm, that she could share her fears with her nice aunt.
"That isn't a peaceful sleep, because you're scared. But when you sleep peacefully, all of the worry... all of the burden..." she stares at nothing in particular, eyes pointed back towards the tree. "it's not there anymore."
"So do you have good dreams when you sleep peacefully?"
Aunt Mika smiles. "I hope so."
This only makes Ymir furrow her brow further. "how do you take a nap forever, though? I thought you always wake up?"
She takes Ymir's hand in her own. "Sometime there will come a day... when you are so tired, that you'll sleep forever. That's what he's doing"
Ymir gives her a questioning look. "who's he?"
"Eren... he's sleeping here." Aunt Mika wraps her hands further around Ymir's smaller ones. "he always took naps here, when he got lazy and wasn't doing his chores... so he's just taking another nap."
Aunt Mika's eyes begin to gloss over a bit as she stares at the rock, a wistful look coating her face.
"is he sleeping peacefully?"
Mika's closed smile extends further.
"... I hope so..."
She closes her eyes, which Ymir cocks her head at. "Aunt Mika, how come I've never seen Eren?"
"He started sleeping the day you were born. In fact, he did it just so you could live in this world... peacefully"
At this, Ymir isn't sure what else to say. She doesn't really know what that's supposed to mean, but Mika looks a little sad, so she doesn't want to keep asking about it. Instead, after a minute of silence with her aunt gently holding her hand, she moves on to her next question.
"What does bee-loved mean?"
She keeps her eyes closed, but lets out a small laugh, lips struggling to maintain her smile. "it's pronounced beloved, you know"
"oh."
She lightly pulls at that red scarf she always wears. "someone who is beloved to you is... someone you love... very, very much"
Tears escape her lonely eyes.
"like mommy?" she thinks to ask, but is stopped when her Aunt Mika starts to cry softly. The tears are mute, slowly rolling down her cheeks and onto the swaying grass.
She doesn't know what compels her to say it, but Ymir finds herself squeezing her aunt's hand, asking, "do you miss him?"
Mikasa nods back, tucking the scarf closer to her face with her free hand. Ymir doesn't like to see her sad, but the peace that the tree and the rock and the flowers bring to her let her sit back and comfort her aunt, getting lost in the moment trying to make her feel better. It isn't long before Mikasa pulls Ymir into her embrace, the young lady quickly returning it. Ymir's mommy used to do that after her nightmares, so maybe it would make her feel better too.
And all that's left are quiet sniffles and the soft rustling of leaves.
She never knew this Eren... but she gets the feeling that he loved Aunt Mika too.
