THE LOVE TALK

One of the most heart wrenching talks that I initiated was the "coming out" talk with my parents. I knew that neither one of them would be angry, disappointed or anything similar. I was pretty sure they would embrace me and say that "they would love me no matter what", BUT the fear of telling them that I already had a girlfriend was another thing.

I remember it as if it was yesterday. Me awkwardly walking out to the backyard where my father was helping Karen, who by the way is the best stepmother in the world, set up a parasol. I nearly choked on air and coughed like an idiot. The concern on my father's face was sort of hilarious in that moment and I laughed. Once I got myself somewhat under control, we all sat down together.

Firstly, I wanted to say that my sisters of course knew about my "way of swinging" and I am pretty certain my father had an idea too but saying it out loud made things real.

Well as expected they took it really well and he said: "You are my daughter no matter what. At least now I don't have to look out for boys". I remember that phrase so well as I bawled my eyes out while hugging him AND mumbled "I have a girlfriend". At this point he broke our hug, much to my protest, and looked me straight in the eyes. "Is it Maya?" he asked. My jaw hit the floor and I must had looked like a complete idiot. He was of course right, and my reaction was confirmation enough for him to be satisfied.

Maya and I had been best friends since we went to boarding school together overseas. She's originally from England, but to our luck her family had to move to Australia because of her father's job. We were thrilled and we spent the first year as friends, but after a while it developed into more. You know how it goes. So, by the time I officially came out to my father, we had been together for 5 months. THAT surprised the lifeguard out of my father, and it was absolutely hilarious.

So now Maya is invited to almost every family gathering, and my father calls her his daughter too, which she loves. My room is decorated with a giant rainbow flag and so is hers. Her family is super supportive too and they had known for years that Maya had an interest in girls. With the burden of keeping my secret gone, life was good.

Karen proved once again that she is an amazing human being and perfect for my father. She had persuaded my father into letting her decorate the dinner table on my birthday. To my surprise she had put rainbow napkins on the plates, vases sorted in rainbow colours AND a balloon wall in blue!

Blue is my favourite colour and it's probably because I was raised on the beach and around blue shirted boys. I somehow spend more of my childhood at the beach and around the lifeguards that my father works with than my sisters. But I've always been a daddy's girl.
