I have been writing a lot of Hunger Games stories lately, and I decided since I have so much time with spring break it would be a lot of fun to start one more! This chapter starts at the beginning of Mockingjay, where Katniss agrees to be the Mockingjay for Coin, and I always wondered why she didn't just make Coin agree to save Peeta, so here's a story based off of that with a few other big twists. Here it is!
My name is Katniss Everdeen. I am seventeen years old. My home is District 12. I was in the Hunger Games. I escaped. The Capitol hates me. Peeta was taken prisoner. He is alive… for now. I have to save him.
I have to save him. That's top priority on my list of things I want in exchange for being Mockingjay. We save Peeta, or I'm not the Mockingjay. Other little things fill the page too, like Buttercup and hunting. The only thing I wrote bigger than rescuing Peeta was I Kill Snow. If he's captured I want that privilege.
Plutarch asks me if I'm ready yet. I clear my throat. "Yes, I'm ready… I'll be your Mockingjay. But I have some conditions. I get to hunt. Our family keeps out cat…" Coin stares at me. Her face is like stone, wiped of all emotion. I wonder how she'll feel about my next two conditions. "And… we save Peeta." I imagine if there had been more people in the room it would've been an uproar. This meeting had been limited to just Coin and Plutarch though.
Plutarch says nothing. Coin simply folds her hands and said, "I'm sorry, we can't do that."
I swallow and brush a few stray strands of hair out of my face. "We save Peeta or I'm not the Mockingjay."
This hits her. While she could spark the rebellion without me, I'm the Mockingjay. I started all this, and we both know she won't be able to finish it without me. And for the first time, I saw real emotion on her face. It was fear. Coin was scared. Too quickly, she went stone faced again.
"Do you have any other conditions?"
"Yes. I Kill Snow."
Coin frowns slightly. I wonder what she was thinking. After a second, she motions to Plutarch and they huddle together, whispering- which is something I never thought Coin would do. I would think it was "below her dignity".
"Explain about this saving Peeta condition," says Plutarch after a moment, brows furrowed.
"It's as simple as it sounds. We go to the Capitol, retrieve Peeta- and Annie, Johanna and Enerobia-" I added, "and you bring them back here within the next month."
Coin lifts her chin slightly, and looks me directly in the eyes, as if daring me to add more conditions. But her words say otherwise. "We accept your conditions…. Mockingjay."
I nod and turn around, eager to talk to Gale and Prim.
Prim's already waiting outside the door. She holds Buttercup, who's purring loudly but hisses when he sees me. "Well?"
"They agreed to my conditions. You can keep Buttercup."
"And?" she asks, bright eyes aglow. "What about Peeta?"
I smile for the second time since coming to District 13. "They agreed to save her."
Prim smiles widely, squeezing Buttercup, who hisses again. "Oops- Katniss, that's amazing."
I nod. "Yep." But even with Prim there, I find myself sliding down the war, staring at nothing. I'm tempted to break down and run into a closet again and scream or something, but Prim's presence is enough to keep me together. "But what if it's too late?"
Prim sits down next to me and gives me a hug. "You don't need to worry about that. He'll be okay. I know he will. He's fighting, you know. He's fighting for you. You just have to fight for him."
That phrase, You just have to fight for him, was stuck in my head the rest of the day. At lunch, I sit down, and Gale finds me quickly and sits down next to me. "What did Coin say?"
"They agreed to my conditions," I repeat. "We can go hunting now."
"Yeah, I saw that," Gale says, checking his schedule. "We can go hunting after lunch."
I shovel down the tasteless food, eager to go hunting. Hopefully that will clear my mind and calm me down.
We have to use Thirteen's generic bows and arrows. They don't stretch as well as mine did at home, or even as the ones in the Capitol, but they work.
I'm completely silent as I retrieve the bow and arrow and head outside to hunt. Gale shoots glances out of the corner of his eye every so often. He's probably worried about me. Everyone has been. And the only one who really understands what I'm going through is Finnick. I decide I'll pay him a visit once I'm done hunting.
I creep around a tree, looking for any sort of tracks to help me find game. I hear a sound and stealthily sneak forward- and am rammed hard in the side by an animal I didn't get a good look at. I don't catch my self in time and my head hits a stone hard. Pain shoots up to my head. I think someone screams. It might've been me. Gale's yelling my name but my vision is swimming and darkening quickly… I can't hold on any longer… and then my consciousness slips away, taking all my memories with it.
Did you like that chapter? Let me know what you think! Should I continue writing this story? I really love the storyline, but you should tell me what you think of it. See you next chapter!
