It was an eerie night in the small town of Hawkins, heavy rain pierced the clouds above and splattered against the ground like bombshells from a plane. This didn't bother Jane for she enjoyed the rain. As she walked down the Ives family driveway, she skipped to the imaginary music playing in her head. In all honesty, she knew she shouldn't be outside at such a late hour, but the temptation the nighttime storm brought was too much to pass up.

This was regular behavior for Jane, or as she preferred to be called El. She had taken a liking to the name, not ever feeling truly comfortable with "Jane". It was a shortened form for Eleanor, the origins of the name being her maternal grandmother. El was celebrating, as it was her 25th birthday. If only she had remained indoors, perhaps her life would have been different. Perhaps it would have been happy.

The calmness of her night was disrupted when she was torn out of her thoughts by the presence of another, "Hello dear, what is it you're doing out here so late?"

Turning to the figure, who she could now see was a cloaked old woman looking more frail than dangerous. Although the old woman's frailty and safe demeanor at first seemed harmless, El quickly turned to fear as the woman's eyes turned to a devastating red. Quicker than the flash of an eye the old woman was piercing her teeth into El's young flesh- silencing her screams with her free hand while the other held her in a place like a vice.

It was over before it began, and El was left laying on the ground with barely a beat of the heart; most of her blood being drained from her body. She could feel a sensation more painful than a gunshot and more awakening than cold water. She was being transformed, her heart completely stopping its constant march. The drums of her soul no longer banging, nothing to indicate she was still there- except for the clear changing of her eyes.

As she laid at the end of her gravel driveway, staring up with wide eyes at the dark blue sky, the raindrops splattering against her skin; she could not move, but she was awake. What felt like minutes turned into hours until finally, she took in a deep gasp of breath and leaped from the ground.
