The sun streamed through small gaps in the curtains as AJ arose from his bed with a grunt. He sat up and stared at his clock for a moment debating whether or not he could slide an extra ten minutes of sleep unfortunately his clock said otherwise so with all the effort he could muster AJ got up and out of bed.
AJ went through his normal morning routine he got up and got dressed into some comfortable workout clothes. He brushed his teeth and took a look in the mirror. AJ was a lean kid with a good amount of muscle. With skin slightly darker than those around him and a large amount of thick dreadlocks pulled back into a ponytail he probably would've stood out in any crowd in japan.
If he lived here a hundred years ago.
Nowadays there were plenty of people with mutation quirks that made things like skin color and hairstyle trivial. Hell there was a kid at his middle school with a chameleon quirk that gave him the weirdest looking fusion of skin and scales AJ had ever seen.
AJ finished getting ready for the day and headed down stairs to grab some breakfast. He never really liked breakfast but his mom would have a fit if he didn't eat. He grabbed his toast and ate quietly.
"Andrew." his mom called.
"Yes Mom/sweetheart." both he and his dad responded.
"I was talking to the little one."
AJ's dad shrugged and went back to getting ready for work. AJ's dad was named Andrew Kurosaki and worked as a surgeon in the emergency room. He was big and built like a gorilla with a cream white complexion, and messy brown hair. He also had the kindest and most timid personality ever. His quirk allowed him to slow anything he touched. When he initially started he saved a lot of patients from bleeding out and saved even more by giving doctors the extra time they needed to finish a surgery. Nowadays he owned his own hospital that had helped several critically injured heros get back on their feet. His most famous incident made the news when Rock Lock had been bitten by some villain with a snake like quirk that produced poison. Andrew had been able to slow the flow of the poison and give the doctors and scientists at the hospital enough time to make an anti venom.
"Be sure to make a good impression today ok sweetie." AJ's mom called "You have that habit of coming off as uncaring.".
AJ's mom's name was Sarah Faye and she worked as a mechanic. She had a small but muscular build, frizzy hair that she kept in an afro, and ebony skin. She was a kind and caring woman with the heart of a lion which was a miracle given her life before. Sarah was quirkless making her childhood and teenage years pretty difficult. Her father was an addict and died of overdose. Her mother blamed her father's death on her and often used her as a punching bag. Being quirkless Sarah had no one to turn to. She was bullied at school and when she called the police on her mother they conducted a very lackluster investigation that was dropped due to a "lack of evidence". As soon as Sarah was old enough she got her license. Her time spent driving was her only time away from her mother because of this she developed a fondness for road trips and when the car broke down she was the one who took care of it.
"I know I'll do my best but I doubt they'll factor my personality during the exam." AJ responded
"That doesn't mean you shouldn't try, you might even make a new friend."
AJ sighed his mom was right. AJ was never bad at making friends but his social battery was damn short and he needed to get to know someone before he really became friends with them. AJ also valued his time alone and mostly preferred his own company to that of others with a few exceptions. Which wasn't to say that he hated going out with friends. He was just a little more introverted than those around him.
The doorbell rang
"That must be Ajax." AJ's dad yelled from the kitchen.
"You two got this go show them what team double A can do." his mom cheered with a huge smile on her face.
"We're rooting for you AJ.".
AJ nodded and smiled "Thanks I'll do my best.".
AJ opened the door and headed out into the bright world ahead of him where Ajax was waiting. AJ had always considered Ajax the closest thing he had to a twin; they both had the same lean body type and tinted skin even the same hair. In fact if they had the same hairstyle they would be identical but to avoid confusion Ajax kept his hair short and natural while AJ opted for dreads.
"Ready to take home another victory for double A?" Ajax asked with his trademark grin plastered all over his face
AJ tried to shove away his excitement, "Are we going to keep using that title if we get in?"
"Of course we are. There is no way I'm ever giving up that name, it's way too perfect."
"It kinda is"
"Really? I thought you hated it."
"I didn't say I liked it, I'm just saying that as far as names go it's pretty fitting."
"I knew it would grow on you."
"Yeah whatever, I still like shock and awe more."
The two of them continued to make small talk as they made their way to UA. One of the most prestigious hero schools in japan. AJ and Ajax had been looking forward to this since they were in middle school well for Ajax since elementary but AJ liked to think that his presence had solidified that decision.
As the two made their way onto the UA AJ noticed a hell of a lot of other students in various outfits walking onto campus as well. They passed one girl with white hair over one eye who looked like they day had already kicked her ass, another looked like some ninja octopus mutant, and another who looked and acted like David Bowie's incarnate.
With a grin Ajax threw an arm around his friends shoulder, "Damn there are some fine looking people here huh AJ."
"If you get drool on my sweater you're buying me a new one." AJ said as he swatted his friend with the back of his hand.
Unfazed Ajax responded "Come on there's some many beautiful girls here you can't tell me your not at least a little interested?"
AJ's eyes scanned the crowd in front of him, his eyes stopped for a second on a pink haired girl in front of him before moving on.
"Maybe but you should focus on getting into UA first then you can go flirt with someone who won't talk to you ever again."
"It was one time and you didn't tell me he was taken."
"And you didn't tell me you were going to make a move on him."
The two continued their banter until they got to the written exam. All things considered AJ thought he did pretty well. Most of what was on the test were things he studied and for the things that were new he was able to get a vague idea on what he was supposed to do. AJ had no concerns about Ajax. Despite how he may act he knew Ajax to be a pretty great student.
"Team double A" continued to the lecture hall where they waited for the rundown on the practical exam.
"Psst AJ" Ajax whispered "isn't that the girl out front that you were ogling?"
Ajax pointed up a few rows behind them where the pink haired girl from out front was sitting ok pink hair may have been misleading because this girl was completely pink at least from what the "twins" could see from her hair to her skin she was completely covered in a magenta tint. Since there wasn't a crowd of people AJ could see her a bit more clearly but with the low lighting in the auditorium it was a little harder to make out the more fine details of her appearance. Were those….
"You're the one who ogles at people she just caught my attention I barely even looked at her." AJ said interrupting his own thought.
"Is that why you haven't taken your eyes off her since I pointed her out?" Ajax smirked
"No it's because I think she has horns." AJ said still staring.
"Wait really?" Ajax turned around right in time for the girl to notice AJ staring and wave at him. AJ realized that he was still staring and quickly looked away but not before Ajax noticed. Ajax turned to AJ and smiled.
"You should talk to her."
"You know that talking to women is not something I'm good at."
"It'll be like talking to me just a woman."
"Yeah but she's attractive."
"Oh really so that's how it's gonna be."
"That's how it always be."
"Fine then I'll do that hard part for you."
"Wait what"
Just as Ajax turned to yell at the girl and get her attention while hopefully embarrassing his friend a needlessly loud yell echoed through the auditorium. Ajax turned back around and muttered under his breath "lucky bastard". Meanwhile AJ was struggling with what he considered a near death experience. He had almost had his "friend" not only almost grab a stranger's attention in hopes to embarrass him but probably anyone in earshot as well. He owed Present Mic some thank you fanmail.
As the rundown on the practical test continued the fear Ajax had placed into AJ's heart turned to a nervous excitement. He was a single test away from his dream school and from the sound of things this test would definitely be within his abilities. As the briefing came to a close the two headed off to their respective testing grounds.
"good luck AJ."
"You're the one who is gonna need luck Ajax are you sure you have enough energy stored up for this."
"Even if i don't look who's here." Ajax pointed over his shoulder to a boy with spiky blonde hair ,"Actually never mind I forgot you don't watch the news so lemme give you the rundown. That kid was caught in a villain attack around 9 or 10 months ago and they mentioned that his quirk has something to do with explosions. From the looks of things it looks like he's headed to the same training ground as me so if I stay near him I should be able to use him to recharge if I start running low."
"That's cool and all but I just wanna know how you recognized his face."
"AJ you know better than I do that I never forget a pretty face."
"Dude" AJ stared at him "that's creepy as shit."
"Look I have no idea how I remembered his face but the point is that I have a battery now"
"Alright perv just don't make double A look bad"
"Right back at you Mr. "I fell for an alien queen.""
As AJ headed for his testing ground he tried to calm himself down. He needed to focus. If he was going to have any chance of making it here he needed to give it everything he had and then some. Waiting for that massive door to open was torture.
3…
He could feel himself starting to grin.
2...
It's funny AJ had always been a bit less reactive facially whereas Ajax always let his emotions rest on his face openly but when the two entered combat things changed. Ajax completely shut down facially and AJ…
1…
Grinned like a mad man.
