Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter nor the Wizarding World universe in which it is set, it belongs to J.K. Rowling and I am merely writing this for enjoyment not profit and to make the veritable well of Harry Potter fanfictions more inclusive.

AN: Hi all, so some of you who also use ao3 may have noticed this story go live on the site today under an anonymous title, that was me and I've had to publish it on here under one of my friends accounts this one because I accidentally orphaned the work on ao3 and there is no way to post anonymously on fanfiction. This account belongs to one of my friends although they've only ever used it to read and review so they let me post on here today as my family who follow my own account would not approve of this story.

So this is a trans Harry one shot. I'm relatively new to writing so don't hold back on comments and criticisms, especially as I am yet to decide if this will remain a one shot or not.

It is set in an alternate universe over the summer before second year, I based it very loosely off an event that I have been through a few years ago. In this event, I was basically Hermione (only Male) and my best friend would fill the role of Kara/Harry.

One character you will not recognise in this story is a reference to a friend of Kara and Hermione's called Mia, she is a creation of mine and obviously unless I decide to expand on this we will never actually see her, I used her basically to fill the role of a friend aware of the trans and LGBTQ community who was there for Kara when she was just coming to terms with her identity, and who helped her accept herself.

Anyway your not here to focus on this note, so on with the story.

July 31st , 1992

The Burrow

Harry sighed and dropped down onto her bed, completely worn out from the party. She was so glad for her expanded trunk, today more than any other day, not only did it get her out of sharing with Ron, but it gave her space to be herself after the party where everyone was expecting her to act a certain way and be a certain person.

A knock on her door had her looking up, "Come in!" she called sitting up on her bed. The door swung open and Hermione walked into the room, a wrapped box in hand.

"Hey Harry, are you okay, you've been really down all day?" Hermione asked concern lacing her voice.

"I'm fine," Harry lamented.

"As if. You say that all the time, and yet it's obvious you're not, what is it, your party, the presents?" Here she paused as though she was bracing herself, "I know it wasn't exactly your thing." Harry gulped, a momentary bout of fear crossing her face, Hermione had hit right on the mark.

"What are you talking about, they're all great!" she responded the smile not quite meeting her eyes. They stood in silence but after a few moments Hermione regained her composure and pushed the box towards her.

"Uhm, well here, this should be more your style."

Accepting the box, Harry slowly removed the wrapping and opened the lid, a gasp escaping her lips as she did so. The gift was a coat, a lovely dark blue leather jacket and the best part was that it was clearly a women's jacket, it was lovely, better than anything she'd received earlier in the day. Or at least more suited to her. The only question was how much Hermione knew to buy her a gift like this.

"I love it!" She exclaimed, pulling it on as she went.

Hermione watched, smiling unnoticed to Harry. They went on in silence for a few minutes until Harry looked up directly at Hermione's face.

She was going to tell her; she couldn't keep lying.

"Hermione I-I ne-need t-to tell you something, I'm tr-" she began but paused at the blatant smile that had just appeared on her friend's face.

"Wait why are you smiling?" she asked a look of confusion marring her face.

Hermione opened and closed her mouth a few times and then held up her hand, "No wait, finish what you were going to say!" she said hurriedly attempting to press her point.

"You know! Don't you?" Harry gasped, relief and worry mixing in her tone, looking Hermione directly in the eye.

"I'm pretty sure, yeah."

Harry took a deep breath, this was it the moment of truth, finally one of her friends would know. "I'm trans."

Nothing happened for a moment and Harry flinched and begun to pull away. At this Hermione unfroze, she moved to sit on the bed and pulled Harry into a tight hug.

"I know, thank you for telling me." Harry gasped in relief there'd been a moment there where she thought her friend would reject her.

At that point in time Voldemort himself could have waltzed into the room and the smiles that graced the duo's faces wouldn't have vanished. For one shining moment Harry was content, just sitting comforted by the embrace and acceptance of one of her closest friends. It was one less thing on her mind and was a great comfort when she considered having to tell the rest of her friends sooner or later.

"How long have you known?" Harry asked a few minutes later, having pulled away to sit next to her friend.

"Honestly, on some level I think I've known since the first week of school, but I realised after Christmas that you were happier than ever before and that you were changing and … well I sort of pieced it together," Hermione explained nervously.

"Oh God. Is it that obvious? How many people already know? What about -"

Harry began working herself into a panic; What if other people knew? Did her friends know? Is that why people stared so often? What about the teachers? She took a deep breath and started to focus again, she knew what was happening, she was having a panic attack, this she could deal with it had happened before.

In. Out.

In. Out.

In. Out.

In.

"Are you okay now?" Hermione asked grasping Harry's hand to comfort her, "I didn't mean to scare you, I just meant that I was able to figure it out, I didn't mean others could. I mean some may have but I only knew because of all the time I've spent with you and all the reading I've done in the past where I came across the topic." She babbled.

Harry looked up smiling shakily, "It's alright I-I j-just w-want to tell people myself."

Hermione pulled Harry into a one armed hug a huge smile on her face and her brown eyes sparkling, "Look, I can't promise they'll all understand, or even that those who do will be very good with it, but Harry I love you, your my family and it doesn't matter to me if your my brother or my sister. I'll always be here for you. As far as the Weasley's and your friends go, well they won't care, because your still you and if they do care then who cares about them."

"S-sister?" Harry gasped out, starting to realise how much her friend really cared about her, it was still such a new experience to Harry, being cared for and looked after.

"Yes, sister." Hermione laughed. "Look, this is your life and while your fame and the stupid title they've given you won't make this easy for you, you've got to live it however you want. You have to be yourself or what's the point!"

Harry gasped, tears welling in her eyes. "Thank you, Hermione."

They sat there together for a while just revelling in each other's company. The hard part was out of the way when it came to the two of them, but Harry knew the simplicity of her conversation with Hermione wasn't an indicator for every reaction that would soon be coming her way.

"I want to tell Ron." As an afterthought she added, "and Neville."

"They don't know yet?" Hermione asked, another question burning on her lips.

"No, not yet." She sighed, "Go on, ask your questions."

"Uhm… I want to get this right, so pronouns?" Hermione asked tentatively.

"She and Her," Harry responded smiling at her friend's consideration.

"Oh yeah. Does anyone else know? And, so, I was wondering, are you changing your name?"

"Right, well last question first, Kara Lily Potter. You can just call me Kara." Kara paused here marvelling at how good it felt finally admitting her name out loud. "And well, Dumbledore, McGonagall, Madam Pomfrey and uhm, Mia."

"You told Mia before me?" Hermione exclaimed hurt evident in her tone.

"It wasn't like that! She's the only reason I was able to stay sane. I honestly thought I would lose it from the pressure when I first figured it out," Here Hermione looked guilty, she hadn't meant to imply her friend didn't trust her. "I finally put it together because of the Mirror of Erised, and well, Mia caught me as I was walking up the girl's staircase over the Christmas holidays. After that I just sort of broke down and told her everything – from there she sort of helped me, she taught me the right terms and helped me understand that there was nothing wrong with being trans. Without her I would have been lost."

"Sorry. I understand. So, Ron then, when were you thinking about telling him and Neville?"

Kara stood up and wandered over to the picture of herself, Ron, Hermione, Neville, and Mia that had been taken a few months ago. She picked it up from the cabinet and returned to the bed passing it to Hermione.

"Look at us, we've all been so happy the last few months. And yet that was when I've been hiding, that doesn't really show me." Kara sighed, "I know it's an irrational fear but I'm terrified that if I stop being the person in that photo even just a little bit, then that scene will all disappear. I don't think Neville will react badly but… Ron..."

"Look, I know Ron's a bit hot headed and that he has some very strong … misconceptions, but he's your friend and as long as you explain to him why you want this and what it means to you, well, I think he'll understand. He may need some time to adjust, and I can't promise his initial reaction will be good, but he's an understanding guy."

"I hope so. Either way I need to tell him next. And Neville, they're both my best friends." Hermione took on a look of mock hurt, which caused them both to burst out laughing especially when they considered the amount of time they all spent together.

"Pfft. As if. We all know that I'm your best friend." Hermione responded in kind, knocking her shoulder into Kara's.

After a few minutes, Kara sighed, she was just dragging this out.

"I need to tell them today. I don't want to back out. However…" Kara trailed off nervously, her voice dropping until Hermione could no longer make out what she was saying.

"What is it? You know I'll do anything to help." the seriousness in her voice caused Kara to burst out laughing earning her a scowl in the process.

"It's nothing like that. Look if I'm going to do this, well I want to look the part - so uhm would you give me a makeover?" She questioned her cheeks heating up.

A short while later while Kara was finishing getting ready, Hermione looked up and mused. "I wonder what difference this'll make on our friendship, not to mention Kara's life at school… everyone expects so much of her already and yet none of them are ready for what she'll do next."

Only time would tell.

AN: Hope you enjoyed the story. I have no idea if the rating on this is right or not, as I normally post on AO3 which has a different rating system, so if you think I need to change it please let me know.
