"We're sorry, Mr. Osborn, but for some reason, we're losing her..." the doctor said, his voice strained.
"WHAT?! What do you mean "you're losing her"?!" Harry shouted at the man.
"We've run tests but we've done all we can-" he started but Harry cut him off.
"I'm one of the richest men because I inherited this company from my father. Don't tell me there's nothing you can do!" Harry said, his voice beginning to break.
"I'm sorry, sir, but-" the man started again.
But Harry just put up a hand, silencing him.
"Don't! I don't wanna hear it!" he told the man sternly and walked over to the glass window to where his beloved wife of two years lay in bed.
Her skin was deathly pale and her normally bright auburn hair was matted with sweat. Tears pricked Harry's ice-blue eyes. She was fighting for her life in there. But she shouldn't be. It should be me, he thought to himself bitterly. She was too young to die.
It wasn't fair! With a shaking hand, he wrenched open the door and stepped inside. The stale hospital-like air of the bedroom they used to share hit him in the face. Various monitors and tubes lined the bed but Harry wove his way around them to get to her. Her chocolate-brown eyes slowly opened before flicking to his. A smile lighted up her face but it didn't quite reach her eyes.
"Harry..." she breathed out softly, reaching a hand to him.
Sing me to sleep
"Sing me to sleep..." she spoke again, her voice almost inaudible in their large bedroom.
Sing me to sleep, I'm tired and I want to go to bed
"Sing me to sleep..." she said again when he didn't move, "I'm tired and I...want to go to bed..."
Sing me to sleep
Slowly, Harry sat down on the bed and pulled her frail body close to his.
Sing me to sleep
She put her head on his chest, his rapidly beating heart soothing in her ears. Breathing out a sigh, her eyes got heavier and heavier.
And then leave me alone
Tears filled Harry's baby blue eyes. He didn't want to leave her alone to face this.
Don't try to wake me in the morning 'cause I will be gone
"Don't try to wake me in the morning," she told him, her voice raspy, "'Cause I will be gone..."
Harry felt like someone had stabbed him in the heart with a knife and it just kept twisting around. She looked up at him then and saw the tears lingering in his eyes. Her hand rested gently on his face and she caressed his skin with her thumb.
Don't feel bad for me
"Oh, Harry, don't feel bad for me..." she said softly, her own brown eyes on the brink of tears as well.
I want you to know
Staring deeply into his eyes, she knew how much this was hurting him. And more than anything, she didn't want to leave him alone in this world. They were all each other ever had. But she had no choice.
Deep in the cell of my heart
Deep in her heart, she knew she couldn't stay. The cancer had been too fast-moving and it pained her more and more each day.
I will feel so glad to go
"I will feel so glad to go..." she admitted and tears rolled down his cheeks.
"I can't-I can't live without you. Please don't - oh, please don't leave me," he begged her, more tears escaping those blue eyes.
He wrapped his arms tighter around her frame and buried his head in her chest. Smiling sadly through the pain, she placed a chaste kiss to his soft brown hair. She would miss him most of all - the laughs, the fights, the constant break-ups and make-ups, the teasing, the love.
Sing me to sleep, sing me to sleep
"Sing me to sleep..." she murmured softly, "Sing me to sleep..."
I don't want to wake up on my own anymore
"I don't want to wake up on my own..." Harry breathed out, his voice choked up.
Sing to me
"I know, Harry, I know..." she replied, kissing his hair once more gently.
Sing to me
He glanced up at her through tear-filled blue eyes.
I don't want to wake up on my own anymore
His hand reached out to touch her face, his cool fingers grazing her hot skin. She leaned into his touch, placing a butterfly kiss on his palm.
Don't feel bad for me
She could see it in his eyes that he hated she was going through all of this pain.
I want you to know
"It won't hurt anymore after this..." she told him, wanting him to know her suffering would be over soon.
His face crumpled slightly and he licked his dry lips, nodding.
Deep in the cell of my heart
"I just don't...I just don't w-want you to d-die..." he admitted softly.
I really want to go
"But I really want to go," she said, "Then I'll be at peace..."
Slowly, she pressed her lips to his and he wrapped his arms around her instinctively. The coolness of his touch brought her a sense of peace that she had been craving. He kissed her back gently before they both broke away. Her brown eyes gazed into his blue ones, making her almost forget all of the pain that wracked her body. He always could take away her pain that way... It was his special gift. And she loved him so much for it.
Sing me to sleep
"Sing me to sleep..." she mumbled as she nestled into his chest.
Sing me to sleep
She sighed as his hands rubbed up and down her arms soothingly. It was almost time... Memories of the times they'd spent together flitted through her mind in flashes and she smiled, thinking of them. The day they'd met at Oscorp when she'd gotten an internship there, the day he asked her out, the time she told him she loved him, and finally, the day they married. They'd never had the chance to have any children. In fact, it was the one thing she'd been wanting and planning to tell him she wanted before she found out she had cancer.
She wanted a little girl with auburn hair like hers and big blue eyes like Harry's. And it would've been perfect. Life would have been perfect. But it wasn't meant to be. And she had to accept that. She tilted her head up to gaze into Harry's icy-blue eyes. She could feel her vision fading, his image becoming blurry.
There is another world
"There is another world..." she told him softly as he cried, tears streaming down his porcelain skin.
There is a better world
"There is a better world..."
Harry's tears fell onto her hair and her fingers rested on his chest, too frail to grip onto his shirt to comfort him.
Well, there must be
"Well, there must be..." he told her gently, almost choking on the words as they left his mouth.
She nodded, smiling slightly.
There must be
"There must be..." she echoed, her words growing quieter.
There is another world
With those last words, her vision darkened and the last thing she saw before she closed her eyes...
There is a better world
... were those big blue eyes she loved so much.
