Angie and DJ were watching Sea Rescue with Cammie and Pumpkin when a newsbreak had Catherine coming in from the kitchen.
It was a fifteen second promo and by the time she could reach for the remote, the voiceover was saying, "... and we've learned that last night's standoff that ended with twelve dead resulted in the governor's task force arresting what we now know was seventeen others, including Etsuko Hachiro and Eddie DeLorenzo, a recently paroled drug kingpin from New York. The governor's office reports forty five pounds of cocaine with a street value of a million dollars was confiscated along with a cache of weapons. Tune in to KITV Island News tonight at six when Elena Mioki will have the full story."
The anchor's voice along with the cry of, "Mommy, look, Daddy in da TV!" had reached her ears simultaneously. Angie had slid off the couch to get closer to the screen when she saw her father on camera. "An' Uncle Danno, an' Uncle Chin an' Auntie Kono. Dey all in da TV. You see dem, right, DJ?" She whipped around to confirm with her brother.
"I saw them. They were catching bad guys so now everything's okay and people are safe." Ever the big brother, he explained in case she'd worry. "That was yesterday, Daddy's still in the garage."
"What was yesterday?" Steve asked as he came in from changing the oil on the Marquis.
"You were on the news, Daddy," DJ said as Angie ran and tugged on him to lift her up. "When you caught those bad people yesterday."
Steve raised his brow at Catherine, who silently conveyed the images were nothing upsetting and he nodded, knowing that the footage was likely of the team and SWAT leaving the warehouse to a plethora of reporters while ATF agents stepped in to wrap up the scene.
"You say, 'No commen's' to dat lady," Angie pointed out and Catherine pressed her lips together at the little girl's astute powers of observation.
"Daddy doesn't like to talk to reporters unless it's to help tell good news, like about Grandma's tutoring programs or helping veterans," DJ said, then looked at his father. "Right, Daddy?"
"That's exactly right." Steve moved to give his son a one-armed hug, then placed Angie on her feet. "How about I grab a shower then we all take a ride to Kamekona's for lunch?"
"Yummy!" Angie hopped in place as DJ agreed with, "Are you gonna have a fish wrap, Daddy? I'm gonna have a fish wrap if you are."
"I definitely want a fish wrap then." Steve winked and headed for the stairs.
"What do you want, Mommy?" DJ asked, smiling when she said, "I think I want fish wraps, too."
"How about you, Angie?" Her brother asked.
"I have chimkin and fries with mustard." Angie announced before heading upstairs. "I get my boots." she called over her shoulder as her mom and brother shared a grin.
Twenty minutes later the family was exiting Steve's truck in the parking lot when, as Catherine and DJ went to grab a table and he unbuckled Angie, a reporter stepped up to him.
"Commander, any comments on the takedown and bust yesterday?" The woman asked, her eyes pinning him hopefully. A comment from the normally tight lipped Steve McGarrett would be a feather in her cap for sure.
Before Steve could respond, Angie answered from her father's arms. "No commen's,'" she said with a smile. "We havin' yummy lunch at Kame's. You can have chimkin or fish or shrimp. If you eat it all you can get a cupcake."
The reporter's professional expression melted into a smile and she laughed. "You enjoy your lunch, cutie." She focused on Steve. "Nothing to add?"
Steve kissed his daughter's head and placed her down, taking her hand. "Esther's doing a fundraiser for Autism, there's a story there. Otherwise, no comment."
Shifting gears, Katie Sakura turned her attention to the cupcake truck and the smiling young woman who was in the window beneath an Autism Awareness banner. "Would you give me a statement on the fundraiser?"
"That I'll do. Eshter does multiple fundraisers every year and this one is to raise funds for programs that assist people affected by autism. The team and I applaud her efforts and will be here to help with the end of month activities. I'm sure she'd love to give you more details," he said as Angie tugged him forward. "Excuse me, We need to join my wife and son."
The family was nearly finished eating when Angie pointed and called, "Grace! Grace is here!" as she spotted her cousin crossing the grass of the parking area.
When she approached the table, Grace hugged everyone in turn. "I'm picking up lunch for me, Danno and Gabby. You guys wrapped so late last night and he promised he ate when I called but Gabby told me he ate cold pizza and crashed so ..." She waved at the shrimp truck. "I spoke to him as soon as the bust was over, but I wanted to hug him in person."
Catherine smiled her understanding.
Angie said "You gettin da chimkin? I's is very yummy, Grace," while rubbing her tummy for emphasis.
Grace kissed her cheek. "I can't believe you're saying Grace like a big girl," she said with a smile at her uncle. "I know I sound like Danno but you guys are getting big too fast." She ruffled DJ's hair, then faced Steve. "Two reporters showed up outside of the science building yesterday looking for comments when you had the guys in a standoff."
"A lady from the news was here before, but Daddy told her to talk to Esther about the Autism fundraiser," DJ explained.
"You'd think they'd realize I won't talk about what the team is doing even if I knew details." Grace shrugged. She was used to an occasional inquiry after a huge case or if a publication was doing a human interest story on the task force. "I've been a cop's daughter for 18 years, I'm never gonna give a comment about anything."
Angie, who'd been half listening while walking her aardvark across the bench looked up and smiled. "No commen's," she said with a toothy grin at her cousin, while DJ offered, "Daddy only talks about helpers."
Chuckling as she bent to kiss the little boy's head, Grace smiled. "That's because your daddy's super smart. Next time I'm gonna say no comment and suggest a story that can help spread the word about something good, like Aunt Elizabeth's programs."
"Good - even if it's not what they came for, sometimes it'll spark some coverage for a worthy cause," Catherine agreed.
As the reporter from earlier that day approached the family after speaking with Esther, she stopped to thank Steve for the tip and waved to the kids. Ever persistent, but in a much less aggressive way than most, she couldn't resist one last try. "Any comments from you, Lieutenant Rollins?"
Catherine smiled. "Not beyond the press statement last night, no. No additional comments."
The woman turned to leave and Angie looked at her daddy, then her mommy with a grin. Before returning her attention to her aardvark, she wrinkled her nose in a very Catherine-like smile and had the family laughing as she muttered, "No commen's."
