The Last Salute

"Heya, guys..."

"Were you all watching?"

"It seems that this is how it ends."

"The goal that all of you... dedicated your hearts to."

For one last time, they salute, and Levi follows suit, honoring the fallen.

He brings up his hand, throat closing up with the sense of finality, and settles the fist against his chest and over the pulse of his beating heart. For one last time, he salutes back, burning the view before him into his mind (he will remember, he always will). Then the moment is over (too soon, way too soon), and they fade, one by one disappearing into the haze surrounding them. His dear friends and comrades, leaving him behind with an aching body and the scalding warmth of his tears spurred by the image of their tranquil expressions. The quivering and tiny smile that plays on his lips holds for a moment longer, but soon it gives way beneath the pressure of more overflowing tears.

And while he cries, gulping for air and just so fucking tired, he thinks that maybe, just maybe, he finally can be at peace.

Well, here we are. Attack on Titan has ended. I'm still not sure what to think of this final chapter. Some parts... felt just a bit off to me. I will have to re-read it sometime later.

This series was a rollercoaster of emotions and a series I love dearly. I've been following it since April 2014, so that's seven years. Time flies.

I love the moment we got with Levi saluting to his fallen friends and comrades. It was just so emotional and beautiful. I just had to write something for it. Since the beginning, Levi has been my favorite character from the series, and I think he's my favorite character ever. I'm happy he finally got his well-deserved rest in the end.
