When somebody loved me
Everything was beautiful
Every hour spent together
Lives within my heart
(1) Yami laughed as his older brother chased him around the garden. Yami had just turned 2 a week ago. His brother Atem was 10 and looked more like their father while Yami looks more like their mother.
"Ate!" Yami shrieked as Atem tackled him on the soft grass and tickled him.
Atem gave his brother a breather and smiled at his messed up hair.
"Bad hair day Yami?" Yami glared at pouted, he turned around so his back was towards Atem with his arms crossed. Atem frowned and sighed. "I'm sorry Yami," Yami still didn't turn. Atem sighed but a smile grew on his face. "Alright, you asked for it," Atem suddenly started tickling Yami again making him shriek and laugh.
"I forgive you! Ate stop!" Yami managed to speak while laughing. Atem smiled and released his brother with a smile.
"I'm sorry I hurt your feelings Yami," Yami smiled and kissed his brother on the cheek.
"It's okay Atem I forgive you," Atem smiled and fixed his brother's hair for him. Yami held out his pinkie with a smile
"Promise we'll be brothers forever?" Atem smiled and nodded. He joined his pinkie with Yami's and they shook "promise."
"Brothers forever"
And when he was sad
I was there to dry his tears
And when he was happy so was I
When he loved me
(2) Yami frowned as he heard his brother's cries from his bedroom next door. He knew their father was being tough on Atem marrying the Princess from the neighbouring country. Even Atem clearly didn't want to marry her, he just didn't like women that way. Yami knew this. He felt sorry for his brother.
Knowing exactly what would cheer him up Yami headed to the garden and picked his favourite flowers. Atem's favourite flowers were Red Poppies, he knew his brother took extra care of the poppies that grew in the garden. Picking a handful Yami headed back to his brothers room
Yami crept inside his brother's room quietly. He noticed his brother lying on his stomach face buried in his pillow. His sobs were muffled, but due to the thin walls of his room, Yami could still hear the cries. Creeping up to his bed Yami called out his brother's name quietly.
"Ate?" Atem stopped crying and looked to his side to see his brother with his hand behind his back.
"Yami? What is it?"
"I heard you crying and I wanted to make you feel better," Atem sat up and Yami pulled his hand out with a slight blush. "I picked these out of the garden since I knew they were your favourite." Atem smiled and gently picked the flowers from Yami's hand, he placed the flowers on his bedside table and picked his brother up.
"Thank you Yami," Atem said placing him on his and kissed his brother's cheek. "But why do you burden yourself with cheering me up when I'm sad?" Yami smiled and hugged his brother.
"That's because when you're happy so am I," he explained softly falling asleep in his brothers' warm arms. Atem smiled and kissed his brother's forehead.
"Thank you Yami, I love you."
Through the summer and the fall
We had each other that was all
Just he and I together
Like it was meant to be
(3) Yami loved the time he spent with his brother. In the summer, Atem had to do his lessons but afterwards, he always made time to spend time with his brother. Their father didn't mind, as long as Atem finished his studies beforehand. Their mother was pleased with how close the two were bad hoped they stayed like that forever.
In the fall, Yami and Atem would help the village prepare for the winter season. Afterwards, Atem would take Yami riding on his horse and show him his favourite spots in Egypt. His personal favourite was beside the Nile, it was always calm there. Especially in the afternoon. Soon it had become their spot to get away from the palace for a few hours.
The two seemed ever closer than ever.
And when he was lonely
I was there to comfort him
And I knew that he loved me
(4) Yami could tell Atem was lonely. His friends were all too busy to hang out with him. Yami had also been busy with starting his royal training to become a proper Prince. Their father noticed as well, he gave Yami the day off to spend time with Atem.
Yami walked into Atem's room to find him lying on his bed reading a book.
"Ate?" Atem looked up and smile seeing his brother.
"Yami? I thought you were with Father?" Yami shook his head jumping on his brother's bed.
"Father let me have the day off, he noticed how lonely he looked," Atem nodded and placed his book down.
"Well, what do you want to do?" Yami shrugged.
"Anything really." Atem smiled.
"You want to go visit the village garden? I don't think I've shown you it yet," Yami shook his head.
"You haven't," Atem smiled.
"Well let's go," Yami could tell from his brother's change in attitude that he was happy again. Yami smiled and followed after his brother, even though Atem didn't say it he knew Atem was happy and that he loved him.
So the years went by
I stayed the same
But he began to drift away
I was left alone
Still I waited for the day
When he'd say I will always love you
(5) As Atem grew to become 21 Yami noticed how distant they had become. Atem had fallen for a boy they had met in the village during the (6) Harvest festival. Yami could tell Atem loved the boy, he was happy for him of course. Though he missed the times they spent together.
Atem had simply drifted away. Leaving Yami alone.
Months had passed and Atem and the boy had started hanging out more. When Atem promised the hang out with Yami he was meeting with the boy instead. Their parents noticed and were saddened by this. Though they knew this problem had to be fixed by itself. No matter how much they wanted to help.
Yami waited and waited. He was waiting for the day when Atem would finally spend time with him. He hoped that one that day Atem would finally come to his senses, apologize, and say "I will always love you, little brother."
Though that day never came.
Yami cried himself to sleep wondering what he had done to deserve his brother's neglect. He wouldn't blame the boy, he wouldn't hate him either. He didn't want to ruin their happiness as much as he wanted them to forget about each other for one day and for Atem to notice Yami's sadness.
Of course.
His prayers were never answered.
Lonely and forgotten
Never thought he'd look my way
And he smiled at me and held me
Just like he use to do
Like he loved me
When he loved me
(7) Yami sighed as he walked through the palace halls. His friend Joey, who was also his cousin's husband, had managed to convince him to get out of his room. Turning a corner, he bumped into a hard chest and was knocked back towards the floor.
"Yami?" Yami looked up to see his brother holding a hand out worried.
"Are you alright?" Yami nodded and took his brother's hand and stood up.
"I'm alright," Atem smiled and nodded.
"So Yami I was thinking. Heba's coming over for dinner tonight and I was wondering if you would help me pick what to wear?" Yami was stunned, his brother was actually talking to him, and not just that he needed his help. With a smile, Yami nodded.
"Of course I will," Atem smiled and they walked back towards his room.
With Yami's help, Atem had finally picked what to wear. The brothers had decided that Atem was to wear a pair of black pants, a dark red blouse, a black vest and a black coat. While they were at it Atem had picked out Yami's outfit as well.
Atem decided Yami was to wear a pair of black pants. a dark blue blouse, a navy blue vest and a black coat. Neither brother decided to wear their crown, instead, they would wear the family crest pins their mother sewed for them when they were born. Instead of the usual necklace, they would wear the leather chokers they had gotten for each other.
Yami smiled missing the time he spent with his brother.
(8) A year later Yami had attended the Harvest festival with Atem and his love, Heba. However soon he had lost sight of them when they were watching a dance happening. Yami had been swept into the dance by a lady with blonde hair and green eyes. After the dance had ended Yami tried to find his brother and Heba. However, they were nowhere to be found.
An hour later and Yami had still not found his brother. He asked the villagers but nobody had seen the two. A few moments later and Yami sighed. He lowered his head as tears formed in his eyes. He turned back and headed back towards the carriage which was waiting to take all three home when they were ready. The coachmen was surprised when only Yami returned a sad expression on his face.
"Your Highness? Where are your brother and his lover?" the coachmen asked, although he already knew the answer. Most of the servants knew the situation between the two brothers.
Yami sighed and shook his head looking back towards the festival.
"He and Heba will be staying longer. I wish to return home though," the coachmen nodded and opened the door for the saddened Prince and helped him in. They took off back towards the castle while Yami finally let his tears fall from his eyes.
What Yami didn't know what that the last time he called his brother and Heba's names were that that heard him. Both had snuck off and were feeding cupcakes to each other from the bakery. When they heard Yami's voice come closer calling their names they hid behind a space big enough for the two to hide behind. Once Yami had walked away they crawled out and proceeded to enjoy the festival. Neither knowing Yami had left on his way back home.
When Yami returned his mother and father were waiting for his return. Only to be surprised when only Yami emerged from the carriage without his brother and Heba. The dried tear tracks on his face were a hint to the King and Queen. His mother walked up and placed her hands on his shoulders.
"They left you didn't they?" she asked softly. Yami nodded and more tears fell down his cheeks. His mother sighed sadly and hugged her son close as he sobbed into her chest.
'Atem why can't you realize your actions have hurt your brother in such a way he can't handle?' she thought to herself sadly as her son wept.

(9) Yami looked out his balcony towards the evening sun and sighed. He knew today Atem would be leaving with Heba for their honeymoon after their marriage had been officiated. Getting out of bed Yami got dressed in the clothes his mother had picked out for the going away ball this evening. The clothes were a pair of black pants, a white blouse, a light grey vest and a dark grey coat which had a cloak attached to the back. Yami also wore black shoes and the leather choker from Atem as well as the sewn crest from his mother.
Heading downstairs he was surprised that he did not hear voices speaking in the ballroom.
Instead, he heard his mother's sad voice and decorations being taken out of the ballroom. Entering the ballroom Yami noticed that everything was being taken down. Walking towards his mother he noticed she had a sad expression on her face.
"Mother? What happened to the ball that was supposed to take place?" His mother turned to him with a sad frown.
"Oh Yami I'm so sorry," his mother said with a soft sigh. "Atem and Heba cancelled the ceremony and the ball early this morning." Yami looked confused and angry at the same time, his mother had put a lot of time and love into setting up this ball only for it to be cancelled.
"Why did they cancel?"
"They're eloping instead, they signed the papers as soon as they told me and your father," his mother said, letting out another soft sigh. "Atem said he and Heba didn't want a big fancy ceremony or a ball, so they're boarding a boat now and leaving early."
Yami's eyes widened and he took off running towards the dock not listening to his mother's cries for him to stop. He even ignored his father's as well, something he would never do. His mother collapsed on the floor to her knees and cried into her hands. Her husband kneeled down beside her and gathered her into his arms. The servants left to give them some privacy.
Yami had to move out the way for many people. He almost ran over five people already but he was in a hurry. So they understood when they saw which direction he was heading. Seeing the familiar colour of his family's ship he saw Atem and Heba on the deck. However, Yami wasn't paying attention and his foot slipped on a wet piece of the dock and he fell backwards.
The ship seemed to get farther and farther away.
Which it was.
Yami's eyes filled with tears and sons wracked his body as he cried. It almost felt like a piece of his heart was missing, the piece which Atem had taken and broken into a million pieces. Never to be fixed again. Of course to Yami's luck, it had started to rain and the people on the dock had ran for cover.
Yami however had not and stayed kneeling on the dock watching the ship grow smaller and smaller.
"I never even got to say goodbye," he whispered to himself as his body went numb from the cold and rain. His body felt heavy from his crying and running. His eyes felt heavy. He finally collapsed to the side his eyes closing as his body went completely numb.
He succumbed to the darkness as sleep took over, the last thing heard was his mother's comforting voice.
When he loved me
Authors Note:
I'm not sure how many remember but I uploaded this story years ago with the intent to write a sequel. I went through a rebranding of myself and ended up deleting the story. However, I found this story on my laptop and have decided to re-upload it with a few changes (Mainly proper format, my god. I cringed at how I used to write with no formatting while reading this again).
I am planning on writing a sequel where Atem and Heba return with someone else with them. Who that is, you'll just have to wait and see.
The inspiration for this story came when I watched ThePirateMermaid's video called Anna and Rapunzel-When Somebody Loved Me (A Sister's Story).
Age Notes:
Throughout the whole story, Atem is 8 years older than Yami is.
