A/N: Dadzawa compilation... you're welcome to leave prompts if you'd like but I'm not the best about updating.
Anyways, here's a new year's idea I got while reading the manga. No spoilers beyond season 4.
Enjoy!
OoOoOoO
He knew what the reaction would be as soon as he saw the email come through.
Aizawa leaned back in his chair slightly, blowing a strand of dark hair from his face in a defeated sigh.
"Saw that too?" Yamada was curiously quieter than usual. He sent a worried glance, albeit brief, towards his dark-haired counterpart.
"Yeah."
"What're you gonna do?"
Aizawa didn't answer. It was time for class anyway. He shoved himself out of his chair and grabbed the copy he'd sent to the printer on the way out. Yamada watched his retreating form cautiously, knowing well enough he was frustrated and just not showing it.
There was mumbling on the other side of the door, but as Aizawa stepped through, it became deathly quiet.
Good. They were finally learning.
"Class." He gave a curt nod.
"Good morning, Aizawa-sensei." It was just barely out of sync, and Hagakure's voice in particular seemed to lag, like she had been distracted. As he moved to the podium, Uraraka sent Deku and Iida a glance. They noticed it too. He was irritated about something.
"Before we get started," Aizawa glanced at the notice he'd printed, "as many of you know, the holiday break is coming up at the end of this month. I'm sure many of you-" his hair rose slightly, and the excited chatter that picked up quickly died back down, "are considering your plans. The principal has decided that traveling out of the area will not be allowed."
A moment passed, then two, then it was chaos.
"That doesn't make sense!"
"We can't?"
"THIS IS BULLS-"
"Watch your mouth." His voice was biting, more so than usual, and it even made Bakugo pause in his tantrum. Slowly, looking defeated, the kids sank back into their seats.
Aizawa sighed, letting his hair fall. He obviously expected this reaction, and to be honest, even he thought it was a bit much. But, after the internships, All-Might's retirement, and Kamino Ward, he understood. Still...
"Leaving the city is expressly forbidden. You may visit with your immediate family if they are in the area, but that is all. All travel plans must be submitted for final approval before you leave. Now, you can come in Mic-"
"ALL RIIIIIGHT WHO'S READY FOR SOME SYNTAAAAAX!"
With a wince, Aizawa departed, but not before he glanced back at the students. Most of them seemed unbothered, but a few were obviously frustrated, the prominent one being Midorya.
He looked like he was close to tears.
That puzzled Shouta as he exited out into the hallway. Midorya lived not too far out, close enough to go visit, so why was he so upset? Iida he understood-not being able to visit his brother in Hosu must have been disappointing to hear. Aoyama's family was, surprisingly, actually French. He wouldn't be able to return to Paris. But Midorya? He made a mental note to keep an eye on him.
"They aren't allowed to travel?" Yagi had arrived by the time Aizawa had returned to his desk. He was glaring at the email open on his computer screen.
"You're here?" Aizawa commented dryly. "Isn't this a bit early for you?"
Yagi didn't seem bothered by the teasing, or even inclined to acknowledge it. "So what're your plans for New Years? Hanging out here?"
Aizawa visibly bristled, but his tone was quiet, defeated. "I guess."
If the blonde noticed, he didn't pry. Aizawa didn't share personal stuff. He could always bug Yamada about it later.
"Midorya seemed particularly bothered." He only brought it up because….well he knew that the Yagi and Midorya had some weird kind of relationship. If anyone knew why he'd be upset, it was All-Might. However, the blonde only frowned.
"Seems like a bit much, even by our standards." Was all he said.
So Midorya wasn't talking to All-Might, either? Interesting…
Whatever made Izuku upset seemed to be pushed to the back burner by the next morning, but Aizawa still watched him warily. The green haired kid put on a good facade, but something akin to disappointment lingered behind his expression the entire week before the break. As the requests for travel rolled in (most being approved), he kept an eye out, but nothing from Midorya. Finally, on the last day of classes, he decided to intervene.
The dorm was quiet. Most kids were eating dinner, but Izuku trained outside, occasionally jotting things down in that raggedy old notebook. Aizawa had seen him through the window as he worked, and it was obvious that he was trying to work through it alone.
"Midorya,"
The boy paused, looking up in surprise. "Oh, Aizawa-sensei, hello."
"Aren't you going to go eat?"
"Nah," he shrugged, "Not really hungry."
"Is it about the travel thing?" He had a bad habit of being blunt instead of sympathetic, and he was reminded of that as Izuku panicked.
"No no nothing's wrong, not at all, I was just-" He scratched the back of his head, realizing that Aizawa probably knew he was lying. "My Dad is working in London right now. We were supposed to go visit him for New Years but…"
Shouta hadn't realized. He knew that Izuku's mom was essentially raising him alone, that his dad was off abroad, but it hadn't occurred to him that he had made plans to go visit. It crossed his mind, as he watched the child's shoulders slump, that he had no idea how long it had been since Izuku last saw his father.
"I'm sorry, Midorya."
Aizawa's tone was warm, more sympathetic than Izuku had heard it before. He ruffled the boy's curls and headed back inside. His mind, though, was racing a hundred miles a minute. He pulled out his phone and sent a quick message to both Yagi and Yamada.
New Years Eve, the dorms were almost silent. Aside from Iida, Aoyama, Todoroki, and Midorya, everyone else had gone home to their families. Ochaco had offered to stay behind, but Iida had waved off her intentions and insisted she be with her family.
The four that remained dallied in the living room, occasionally glancing at the television but each going about their own activities in quiet solitude. Iida read on a couch, Midorya flipped through his notebook, Aoyama played on his phone and Todoroki did homework at a table.
They remained in a sad sort of silence, all four obviously feeling remiss about their lack of holiday plans, but none wanting to really be alone in their rooms.
In the evening, Aizawa appeared with groceries, catching them by mild surprise. Eri padded along behind him like a little duck.
"Oh, Aizawa, Eri," Izuku sat up, watching the disheveled man hobble off to the kitchen, "I didn't know you were here."
He didn't seem too pleased about it either, but all he said was,"Not like I can go anywhere."
"Deku Deku!" Eri sprinted over and launched herself on the couch next to him. "We are having soba!"
"Soba?"
"Yeah! Aizawa-sensei promised for New Years!"
Despite their previously downtrodden expression, Eri's giggling enthusiasm seemed to pull all four boys back towards being in a good mood. Aizawa let himself smile a bit as the little girl told Deku, in detail, about the dumplings she had bugged him all afternoon to make, bouncing on her knees as she did so.
He had offered to take the girl grocery shopping with him as a way to get her out of Yamada's hair, which turned into a whole thing. Despite the rigorous training schedule and the fact that Eri hadn't been able to visit with Class 1A as much as usual, even she had seen how bad the boys felt about not being able to see their families….so he had made her part of his plan as well.
Aizawa made his way to the kitchen to prepare the soba and dumplings while the boys helped Eri pick a movie.
By the time the movie ended, Aoyama had returned to his room to take a shower, and Todoroki had drifted off against the arm of the couch.
"She fell asleep." Iida pointed out as he stretched, lifting his hands over his head.
Eri seemingly had also dozed off, basically sitting in Aizawa's lap with her head against his chest. He grunted in both inconvenience and also mild discomfort-she was really quite warm, and it made him sweat under his black sweater.
"Can she stay the night?" Deku looked between the two hopefully.
"Rational choice to let her sleep." Aizawa commented, slowly shifting the child off of his lap and onto the couch itself. "Grab me a blanket, will you?"
Iida took off, and a moment later returned with a fluffy blanket he kept on his bed.
Carefully, without waking her, Aizawa placed a pillow under her head and covered her with the blanket. "You boys should head to bed, too. It's late."
Without another word, he left them there to retire to his own room. They mumbled a 'goodnight' as he walked away.
Despite being tired, the night passed fitfully, at least for Deku.
He tossed and turned, getting just to the edge of sleep and then twitching and startling himself awake. Then just as he'd be falling asleep again, he'd picture his family together without him and get twitchy all over again. Off and on, over and over he turned until the sky began to lighten.
Even when he did eventually doze, he twitched awake yet again when he felt a cold breath on his face.
"Dekuuuuuuu-"
"Hmpf-"
"Dekuuuuuuu-"
His eye twitched open. Face to face with wide auburn eyes, he yelped and accidentally sent himself rolling out of bed.
"Oh, Eri-"
She snickered behind her hand. "Come on, Deku, let's go!"
Eri launched herself off of his bed and took off through his open bedroom door. Having no choice but to follow, Deku quickly pulled his shoes on and raced after her.
"Eri-"
It wasn't even dawn yet, and he was afraid that her giggles as he chased her would wake the others up. But, as they rounded the corner to the living room, he noticed that he was the last to wake.
"You certainly like your beauty rest, Mon Chéri." Aoyama teased.
"What's going on?"
"Come. We'll be late." Aizawa, who looked odd without his scarf bunched around his shoulders, turned on his heel and headed outside.
"You don't think we're training, do you?" Todoroki began walking to catch up, and the others followed suit.
"Not on a holiday, surely!" Although despite the confidence in his voice, Iida didn't look so sure. Plus, they were only in their tracksuits, no costumes or anything, and it wasn't like Aizawa came to train either.
Despite their questions, Shouta said nothing. He talked quietly to Eri only, who seemed to know what was going on more than the four of them. She clung to his pants, one hand bunched in the fabric as they walked towards the school building.
Aizawa only stopped to open the doors, and again to wait for the elevator.
"Aizawa-sensei, is everything ok?" Izuku pressed. Now that they were stopped, he hoped the perpetually-exhausted man would finally say something.
"Come on. We'll be late."
Late? Deku frowned as they piled into the elevator. It wasn't like many others were on campus at the moment. And that didn't explain why they were being blindly led by a child and a hypersomniac towards the roof of the school building.
However, when they got to the top floor, the boys understood why they were brought up there.
"Woah-"
"Magnifique-"
UA sat at the peak of a hill, and from the roof, the city spread below them, dozens of lights glittering for miles. The sky above, painted in jewel tones of blues and purples, was only brightened by the stark orange of the sun as it peeked over the horizon.
"The first sunrise of the New Year." Izuku murmured as he inched toward the fencing that surrounded the roof, drawn in by the cold breeze and the dazzling sky before them.
"Pretty huh?"
"Oh, All-Might! Good morning sir!" Iida went rigid, but Yagi waved him off.
He and Yamada had come up just behind them on the elevator.
"This 'ol softie asked us to join you!" Mic threw his arm around Aizawa's shoulders, but he was quickly elbowed in the side. Recovering, he moved to stand beside Todoroki instead. "We used to come up here when we were in high school. The sunrise is best seen from here, ya know!"
Aizawa grumbled in agreement.
Yagi, who had placed Eri on his shoulders to see over the barricade, nudged Izuku lightly. "He felt really bad...that you guys couldn't go home."
Deku glanced at Aizawa out of the corner of his eye, but he was busy talking to Present Mic.
"He couldn't go home either. He was supposed to meet up with his family in Hokkaido."
The word family didn't really seem like an Aizawa thing. He was always so distant with them, so reserved. No parts of his personal life came up in class, although class 1-A had certainly dealt with their own issues in front of him. Suddenly, it made sense. The soba, the movies with Eri, the rooftop- he was trying to make them feel better.
Izuku hummed his response, not sure how to answer that.
They returned to the dorms an hour later with plans to go get breakfast in town. Eri had begged Aizawa enough for waffles that he finally relented. While the boys went to get changed, Izuku lingered behind.
"Hey, Aizawa-sensei,"
"Hmm?"
"I'm sorry you can't go home either,"
Caught off guard, Aizawa glanced at him, eyebrow raised.
"but thank you for being here."
For the briefest of moments, Deku was worried he had said something wrong. But, just as he was about to apologize, Aizawa reached out and squeezed his shoulder lightly.
"You're welcome, problem child."
