Trey Kirby grew up a fan of Mid South wrestling in the deep south. At 18, he signed up to be trained by "The Big Cat" Ernie Ladd and Johnny Grunge as a professional wrestler. He worked at a gym part time to pay for his training and quickly caught eyes because of his look and ties. His trainer Johnny got him a try out with ECW in 1995 and it was all history from there.
Paul Heyman signed Trey to a $100 a match contract, changed his name to "Truck Stop", and booked him as a bodyguard for Public Enemy in their fued with the Dudleys. Trey stayed in ECW for four years, eventually becoming a ECW maineventer. He'd done everything from joining Raven, fueding with Sabu, and making headlines with Tommy Dreamer.
At the age of 23, Trey recieved a call from JR, Jim Ross. Behind Heyman's back, Trey got in his little 1992 Ford Taurus and drove three states over to Pittsburgh where Raw was being held, just to have Jim look him up and down for a few minutes and shake his hand. He didn't get a tryout. He didn't get asked many questions. He just got a hand shake and was sent back to the hardcore bingo hall. Trey almost forgot about the frustrating interaction but three months after he got a call back from the WWE. This time John Laurenitis called to offer him a spot in the developmental OVW, with a contract paying 50K a year. Trey was insulted by the thought of going to developmental because he had been the ECW World Champion but the WWE was offering over twice what Paul was paying so he accepted.
Paul was accepting. He knew ECW was going under so he sent "Truck Stop" off with a main event match against the upcoming champion, Mike Awesome.
Trey hit the ground running in OVW, bound and determined to prove himself. What was great about the WWE and OVW, the main roster guys would often come down to check out the new crop of talent and give a little advice. That's where Trey got close with Steve Austin. They bonded over the southern lifestyle and mutual buddys the they met along the way. Steve enjoyed training with Trey and a group of them would go hunting together whenever RAW was in Louisiana.
Trey stayed in OVW for another year and in 2001, he finally got the call up to the mainroster. The Invasion storyline was green lit and Vince was quick to realize he had already stolen a lot of the big names from ECW, and the WCW guys weren't willing to forego their Ted Turner contracts. Trey "Truck Stop" Kirby was one of the few big names the fans remember but hadnt seen in a while. He was perfect to stand beside Booker T and Shane McMahon.
Jim Ross told Trey that Vince called the "Truck Stop" name the dumbest thing he'd ever heard. Trey laughed knowing Paul Heyman really got upset when Vince said that. Trey himself had never been a fan of his ECW gimmick but he knew the ECW fans loved it. As long as he didnt get saddled with a bad name like Issac Yankeem, he was happy.
Through the grapevine, Trey found out his new gimmick name. It was the brain child of Gerald Brisco. Trey Kirby aka Truck Stop was now named KILLIAN KIRBY.
