Reunion
I'm awful when it comes to keeping up with writing. But sometimes, the scenes I see in my head have to be written. I recently discovered Dragon Age Inquisition and have fallen in love with all of the characters. I can't promise anything more will be written but I'm hoping I finish this one.
Summary: Amara Travellyan receives an urgent letter requesting assistance. OC and of course some of my favorites.
The letter trembled slightly in her hands. The words on the page blurring as tears pricked at the corner of her eyes.
"Maddy's hurt. Venatori. Come if you can. I've attached directions. -K"
Amara Travellyan cleared the lump from her throat as she discarded the letter onto her desk. She sprinted, grabbing her coat as she made her way to the great hall. She said a silent prayer as she ran, two Orlesians muttering curses as she blew past them.
"Maker, keep him safe."
"Amara. Talk to me. What on earth is going on?!"
Cullen watched helplessly as she whirled around the room. Bottles and tonics clanked as she tossed them haphazardly into her bag. Bundles of elfroot, protruded from bulging pockets. Her staff's handle caught a shelf as she moved, glass shattering as it crashed to the floor.
"SHIT!" "I don't have time to explain, my-" she paused then and met his eyes "…someone very important to me is injured, possibly even dying. I will explain as best I can when we get back. For now you have to trust me"
She moved quickly then, heading for the door. Cullen reached out and grabbed her arm, turning her to face him.
"Amara. Wait!" Desperately he clutched her arm, but the look on her face had him sighing in defeat "Just… Stay safe. I don't need another repeat of Adamant."
Her eyes, wide and panicked, softened slightly. She kissed him, gripping his pauldron in her hands.
"I promise"
Without a glance back she was out the door and rushing into the courtyard. Her team stood bleary eyed from the early morning hours. Their horses stood impatiently, stamping their hooves at the frantic energy in the air.
"SOLAS, BULL, DORIAN! We leave NOW"
Bull dismounted the exhausted forder with a curse. Normally a two-day ride from Skyhold, Amara had set a breakneck speed for the Storm Coast. They had arrived in a mere 18 hours, only stopping to swap horses. His thighs ached from the hours in the saddle and he stretched, desperately trying to loosen the stiff muscles. Amara stood some ways away, pacing as she examined the map. Shaking his head he turned to his other companions. Cold rain drenched his skin as walked over to where Dorian and Solas stood huddled under a large pine. Solas looked up as he approached
"Has she said anything to you?" The elf frowned as he watched their leader "I can see something has her terrified, which after everything we've faced, has me worried. What could possibly match the horrors that we have already seen?" "Not to mention, what kind of group do we make? If we are to expect a battle, we are ill prepared. You cannot be expected to cover all three of us!"
"Hey now, careful. You'll hurt my feelings." Bull sighed "All jokes aside, I don't know what's going on. All I know is that I was pulled out of bed at the ass crack of dawn and told to prepare for a trip to the Storm Coast. Now, I like adventure as much as the next, but I prefer to know what I'm up against. Dorian? Any insight there mage-boy? I know you two are close."
Dorian ignored the jab, his eyes worried, watched as Amara gulped from her waterskin and scarfed down a piece of hardtack. Her mouth set in a hard grimace as she shoved the map back into her coat and dipped into her tent.
"I'm afraid I know only as much as the two of you. Although I have to agree with Solas, our party is not conducive to any kind of battle. I'm sure all will be revealed in time. For now we need to support her, something has our dear inquisitor terrified and we need to be prepared for whatever is to come next."
The three men drenched now by the downpour settled into silence as they waited.
"Stop!" Amara thrust her hand out behind her as the party rounded the hill, she turned then addressing the party.
"We should be approaching the meeting site, tread very carefully. I can absolutely guarantee there will be traps. Solas, Dorian you two see if you can find any barriers or elemental traps in the area, Bull and I will check for pitfalls and trip wires. If you come across anyone, do not engage. Fall back and we will approach together. I cannot ensure your safety if you rush ahead. My friend is cautious and very untrustworthy, you will likely end with an arrow in your throat before an explanation can pass your lips."
Dorian sighed and rubbed his eyes "Is that all? Are you sure your 'friend' doesn't have a dragon hidden up their sleeve as well?"
Amara winced "I know this is unfair to all of you, and I will explain everything soon, for now we need to continue forward" Dorian chuckled and patted her shoulder fondly
"Ah but what are friends for dear? Mysterious adventures in the waterlogged country, miles from civilization and searching for someone who will most likely kill us? I wouldn't have it any other way"
Bull groaned "Alright alright, enough. Can we get moving? My ass is frozen and I have a redhead and a drink waiting for me back at Heralds Rest"
Solas merely nodded and headed into the trees with Dorian following close behind. The dim glow of their magic illuminating the branches as they walked.
Amara turned and motioned for Bull to follow, she walked slowly, each step soft and careful as she scanned the ground.
Bull frowned at the slow pace, his hands cold twitched at his sides impatiently. He needed to warm up and soon. Irritated he rubbed his hands together, blowing into them as he walked, scanning the trees for any glint of wire. There! Halfway up a pine just to the left, wire exposed by the rain stood half a head above Amara. He followed the line down until it reached the base of the opposite tree. The trap was obvious, fresh dirt covered a spiked piece of wood. Setting off the wire would have sent the wood careening into the unlucky trespasser.
"Hey Amara! I found something!" gently he grabbed the wire and deftly began disassembling it
Amara looked up
"BULL! WAIT! DON'T!" but it was too late.
The jingle of bells sounded behind him.
"Shiiiit." The trap was a decoy, a twig snapping to his right was his only warning before lithe legs wrapped around his neck from behind and he was pulled to the ground. His attacker used the momentum to swing around until they were perched atop his chest.
He hit the earth with a grunt and found himself staring into ferocious dark green eyes, an arrow nestled against his jugular. Hair dark with rain framed a face with high cheekbones and a petite nose. Dark red vallasin accentuating every feature. Her pointed ears seemed to pin back as a full red mouth snarled at him.
"You have two seconds to explain why you're here before I send my arrow through your spinal column. Who sent you? I can spot you Ben-Hassrath bastards from a mile away. We've pissed off a lot of people but I didn't think the Qun were among those ranks."
For the first time in his life the Iron Bull was speechless, his hands raised helplessly in surrender.
"Kaeda! Stop! He's with me!" The elf twisted slightly towards Amara's voice
"Amara?"
Bull grinned and lurched forward, grasping his attacker by her waist he spun, pinning her beneath him.
"There, now that's better. I always preferred to be on top"
She screeched. The sound reminding him of the fierce jungle cats he had faced in Seheron. He grinned wider. He'd have to remember to thank Amara later for dragging him along.
"Bull get off you lummox." Dorian emerged from the trees, rolling his eyes at the spectacle before him. Solas stood at Dorians shoulder, his eyes laughing in the dark.
Pausing only momentarily, he stood, raising his hands again in surrender. The woman, Kaeda, leapt back her bow raised and aimed at his heart.
Solas spoke softly, elvhen words beseeching. She did not blink or acknowledge his presence. Eyes hard and unyeilding continued to glare at Bull.
"Easy there Katari" Her brows rose slightly but quickly slammed back down into a frown. She spat in his direction before slowly lowering her bow and turning to Amara.
"You were supposed to come alone."
"Nice to see you too. I came as quickly as I could. You've met Bull already" Kaeda scowled in his direction as he swept low into an exaggerated bow. "This is Dorian and Solas, Dorian has had some run-ins in the past with the Venatori. Solas is one of the inquisitions top spirit mages, if anyone can help heal magical injuries it's him." She paused, almost as if unwilling to speak
"Is Maddy…"
"Alive. For now. I did what I could but he cannot travel as he is now. The Venatori are dead but his wounds from the fight seem slow to heal. I've done what I can but i'm no healer. Whatever magic the Venatori used against us is preventing him from healing."
Amara nodded and motioned
"Please, take me to him"
Kaeda eyed the party suspiciously once more. Sighing, she tucked her bow over her shoulder and moved into the trees.
The cave was well hidden. A fallen pine all but blocked the entrance. Amara, Solas and Dorian slipped into the cave with ease. Bull struggled slightly with his larger frame but even he eventually squeezed in.
The walls and majority of the floor remained dry, a small fire illuminated the back of the cave, where a shrouded figured hunched against the wall. Amara rushed forward. The others went to follow but stopped when Kaeda turned to block their path. "Wait here."
"Maddy…"
The figure shifted and groaned
"Amara? Aren't you supposed to be off saving Thedas?"
Amara rolled her eyes and began to pull at the cloak shrouding the stranger
"You idiot. Like I could focus on anything after Kaeda's letter. What did you manage to do to yourself this time?"
"Stop. Wait. OW!" the man hissed as she pulled the cloak over his head.
"Dammit Maddy"
"And stop calling me that. You know I hate it. MATTIAS. My name is Mattias"
Purple and green bruises marred tanned skin, scars from many fights crisscrossing like a map across the mans chest. A large bandage, white but slowly reddening at the disruption from the cloak covered his stomach.
"Shut up"
"Amara, really, I'm sure I'll be fine in a couple days. Just a setback. Remember Ansbury? Now that was a fight, almost a month before…" The withering glance she sent his way had the words die in his throat. "Ah yes, well, perhaps it is good that you are here… Why don't you introduce me?" Mattias peered curiously around her shoulder at the three men.
Amara swiped angrily at the tears that coated her cheeks, and cleared her throat.
"Bull, Dorian, Solas. This is Mattias. My…"
"My god." Dorians face mirrored the others as he stared at the man. Bright gold eyes, so familiar stared back at them. He whirled to face Amara. "He's your brother!"
