Jay was a former Army ranger and had been included in intelligence for years thanks to Antonio Dawson who had talked about him to voight the sergeant, head of the squad.
Jay halstead was a really good detective, he threw himself heart and soul in all cases and since he worked with intelligence he has solved a lot of them, often being injured and in pain.
Sometimes, however, he got overly involved to the point of being sick.
This is the case with investigations involving the military.
What he experienced when he was in Afghanistan had left behind aftermath. Deaths injuries, killing of adults and children without discrimination.
Over the years a PTSD had also established itself in him.
Sometimes he withdrew from reality and returned to experience past events.
Not to mention the nightmares that cut him off at night preventing him from getting a good rest.
All in all, however, over the years he had managed to manage the situation and had found tricks that helped him manage his ailment and the stress of the cases such as going for a run early in the morning.
It was March 24 and everything was proceeding as usual.
Jay had set the alarm for 5:30, got up, and after fixing everything in the house he had run for an hour at the nearby park.
When he got back he took a nice hot shower and settled down to go to work.
He reached the district early.
This was nothing new, he often happened to arrive before the others, he liked to be punctual.
They would be doing office work this morning. They had a lot of paperwork to file, relating to cases they had solved in the past few weeks.
He had already got to work when Sergeant Voight arrived at the office. He had a dark look he was very nervous.
This did not bode well.
Once they all arrived the sergeant went to them and began to inform them of what had happened.
"Mr. Jeff Rogers, army commander and ranger has been murdered," Voight said.
Hearing those words Jay felt his blood run cold. He knew him.
They weren't friends, but he had seen him several times when they were in Afghanistan.
Who could have killed him?
He was now a retired ranger.
-Jay-the boss called him, but he didn't answer, he was distracted, absorbed in his thoughts.
"Halstead," Voight always said in a firmer, more decisive tone.
Jay turned to him and noticed that everyone was staring at him.
He apologized, he was thinking about what he was talking about.
- Did you know him? asked the sergeant
-Yes, he was a good person. We happened to serve the country together when we were in Afghanistan. replied the young detective.
-Okay, you and Upton are going to collect as much information as possible. Go to his house and find clues at the crime scene. Since you knew him, even if not well, you may notice something more. Others try to gather information by talking to those who knew him or who saw something.
Given the assignments Voight went back to his office, the commander was waiting for him to speak to him and the boys of the squad immediately set to work.
