Prologue

Chapter One: The Brave Prince, the Heir and the Bawdy Princess

Born 57 years after his great-grandsire Aegon the Conqueror and his sister-wives united the six kingdoms and forged the Iron Throne of Westeros in dragonfire, Baelon was named for the uncle of those three forebearers.

Where the first Baelon Targaryen lived to enjoyed lordship over Dragonstone, Baelor the Brave was the secondborn son to the King Jaehaerys Targaryen, first of his name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Six Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm and his sister-wife the Good Queen Alysanne.

His family had been dragonriders since the dawn of the empire of Valyria of Old. Yet, only one creature that had seen the might of Valyria of Old remained: Balerion the Black Dread, a mighty beast which upon the back of which the Conqueror united the kingdoms of Westeros. The Black Dread must have been at the least over eight score years old when Baelon entered the Dragonpit for the first time. He barely remembers the day now, but the courtiers loved to remind him of his brave madness. Balerion, whose wings cast shadows as big as boroughs had a bewildered look in his eyes when a toddler Baelon hit him square on the snout. Ever since that day, the prince would be known as Baelon the Brave.

Only two years his senior, his older brother Aemon, had always been Baelon's best friend. Wherever Aemon went, Baelon followed. As the second-born child but first-born son of the King, Aemon was formally granted the title of Prince of Dragonstone at age seven, a title which was customarily bestowed upon the heir to the Throne. Aemon's royal parents had a living older sibling though, Princess Rhaena, who had remarried after her late brother-husband Aegon's death and was rumored to be with child.

This would be the second succession crisis Aemon would come to worried about, as he was born five years after his sister Daenaerys whom his mother Alysane desired to be named heir. However, when the beautiful Daenaerys was seven years old herself, tragedy struck, and she succumbed to "the shivers", ending her life prematurely.

In the very same year, the Good Queen Alysanne had given birth to Alyssa Targaryen, who had looked so much like her deceased sister Daenarys it made the Good Queen cry to behold her.

Thankfully, her mother did not have to be reminded of the tragedy that befell Daenarys for long, as Alyssa soon grew into her own features: her face became long and her features skinny, with large ears framing a pretty face with a smile that tended to fall heavier on the left side and a crooked nose suggesting an old injury. Where Aemon's hair had been a bright white-gold and Baelon's a silver, Alyssa's hair was dirty blonde, lacking any trace of the typical Valyrian silver locks. Similarly, her eyes were unlike her siblings': Aemon's pale lilac and Baelon's dark indigo eyes, mesmerizing as they were, were no match for her heterochromiatic eyes: one a violet, the other a bright green.

Where Baelon followed Aemon around, Alyssa had followed Baelon. If not for her pretty face, Alyssa would oft be mistaken for a boy, oft dressing in boy's clothes, with activities such as riding, climbing, and dueling being her preferred pastimes. As she grew in age and character, she'd boast she was "as bawdy a wench as any barmaid in King's Landing". And still more bawdy she would become.
