The hands of a pilot are distinctive. Juno knows them well, the rough calluses where the steering mechanisms hold. She remembers a time before her hands showed the harsh training she'd undergone, and yet she knew the feeling of those rough hands against her skin.
It was jealousy at first. Iden was prettier than her, from the year above Juno and there were rumors that Iden was being scouted for Death Squadron. It was jealousy at first, then the grudging respect for a rival, a deep friendship that blossomed into the sweet-somber taste of a first love. Juno can never forget her. The way Iden's dark eyes would sparkle when she laughed...
"You never forget your first love," Commander Cody had told her once (he always got that far away look in his eyes when it was brought up)
Juno will never forget Iden, but her heart beats so much faster for someone else.
Starkiller is not gentle, he is not what one would call 'sweet' (those same calluses- and more besides- adorn his hands), but he is loyal and passionate (his devotion scares Juno sometimes- he would destroy a world if she but asked)
Starkiller is not gentle, but he is honest; he is not kind, but he is learning to be. And sometimes, when by chance she meets his eyes, she thinks of a future, a farm perhaps, maybe even children; and when Starkiller graces Juno with one of his rare smiles, she vows her own vengeance upon the Emperor and Vader alike.
The hands of a pilot are distinctive. Juno is a good pilot and an excellent commander. Her hands are callused and rough and stained in the blood of an entire planet, and the river of blood keeps rising.
