Steve Montgomery

My name's Steve Montgomery. My real name's actually Stephen, but no one calls me that because I hate it.

Wait, actually, that's a lie. One person can call me that without being my sworn enemy.

Annabeth Chase, goddess of awesomeness.

She's my best friend.

*Flashback*

Ms. Miller was about to talk when the door swung open and a girl walked in. She was astounding, let me tell you.

She had beautiful curled blonde hair, a tan figure, the body of an athlete, and startling gray eyes.

Her eyes.

Oh, her eyes.

They looked deadly, intelligent, cold.

Everyone fell over their knees trying to be with her.

Except me. I wasn't interested in romance. Looking sort of relieved that there was at least one person who wasn't showing off or interested in her looks, she sat next to me.

I introduced her to my friends the next day: Charlotte, Noah, Frenchie, Melissa, Robert, Hayley, Kaleb, and Oliver.

But then I started wanting her as something more than a friend as I realized how similar we are.

I mean, for one, Annabeth never wants to fight, just like me. Whenever someone says something, she just sighs and walks away. (background info: because she's on strict orders from Chiron not to hurt any mortals)

Not to brag, but I feel like I know Annabeth the best out of all her friends. I know she went to another school for two years before this one, and that it didn't really 'fit.' I think it means that she didn't really have any friends.

Because, well, she seems like sort of a loner outside of school.

I know she goes to summer camp because she told me she couldn't hang in summer break because of camp a few months before our would-be first summer break together.

See? I know so much about her.

Annabeth looked over at me and smiled. "I'm gonna go to summer camp today." She said, and she sounded really hyper.

"Can I drop you off?" I asked, wanting to spend some time with her.

"No, it's okay, some friends are coming by," Annabeth replied, sounding just a little panicked.

"Wait, you have friends other than us?" I asked. I know it's rude, but I was shocked. She seemed like she didn't know anybody. She never brought up any friends who weren't us ten friends.

Annabeth frowned. "What's that supposed to mean?" She asked.

" I just mean you've never talked about any other friends..." I trailed off. RED LIGHT! RED LIGHT! WHY DID I SAY THAT!? SO STUPID!

"Yeah, well, I have tons of friends!" She shot back. I cringed, but Annabeth had a smile on her face again. I blew a breath out, thinking that she was happy with me, but then I turn around and notice a big, beat-up van.

"WE'RE RESCUING YOU FROM THIS PLACE CALLED HELL!" An elf-like boy shouted through a rolled-up window.

Annabeth shook her head with an amused look on her face and I jumped on the opportunity. "What a bunch of losers." I snorted.

Annabeth whipped around, glaring at me. "They're not losers. They're my friends!" She spat, and I jumped back.

"Uh, sorry," I muttered, and she groaned and muttered something like remember what Chiron said.

"But, um, they don't look like the kind of people you'd hang with. I mean, they look like gangsters. And you're like, the opposite of a gangster. You're amazing!" I winced as I said that last part. Wow, Montgomery. I scolded myself. Smooth. Real smooth.

"Thanks for the compliment, but these people are NOT gangsters. They're the best people in the world! And I won't stand by and watch you insult them. But I know you didn't mean it, though. Anyways, um, I'll see you!" She said abruptly and eagerly started for the van.

"Wait! Can I go with you, please?" I asked.

She started to say no, but then she thought a little and sighed. "Fine. But I'll drop you off at your house." (because she knew it would be weird if she said no)

I beamed, hoping that she was falling for me. Hoping that she looked at the gangster friends and me, and realized how good of a friend I was. And the deal for dropping me off at my house was a good one. It was ten minutes to there I did NOT want to walk, I was supposed to ride with Noah but he abandoned me when Charlotte asked if he could drive her, so it's not like I have somewhere to be anyway.

I got in with her, expecting two or three creeps, and also not, because Annabeth wouldn't hang out with those kinds of people.

Then I saw something that blew my mind.

In the shotgun was the elfish guy, and he was tinkering with some pipe cleaners. A kid with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a white scar on his lower lip was driving.

In the second row, a boy with dark hair and really pale skin was squished between a pretty Native American girl with feathers in her hair, a nervous-looking brunette, and a brown-skinned girl with cinnamon-brown hair.

A huge, buff dude with a sort of babyish face and a punk girl with dark hair and a silver circlet were sitting in the third row, along with a...

WOW.

A super hot guy. He had dark hair, mussed up in just the way that made girls want to run their hands in it. He was tan and lean and athletic, and his EYES.

His eyes were a sea green, so hot they would make any girl melt.

Not me. I'm not gay. Nothing wrong with gay people, of course, just wanted to point out I'm not gay. Because that means I'm not interested in the super hot guy.

He made me feel really intimidated, though. I felt super puny.

I had normal brown hair and normal brown eyes and normal skin color.

"Hey, you didn't mention you had a friend." The super hot guy said.

Annabeth blushed. "I- well- it's just- It's just to make you suffer, Seaweed Brain." She said. Hey, I wanted to make her blush and stutter! This super hot guy was my enemy from now on.

"Seaweed Brain?" I asked. Annabeth and this 'Seaweed Brain' turned to me, looking sort of annoyed to see me still here.

"Is he-" 'Seaweed Brain' started to ask.

"No. He's a mor-friend." She said.

What did mor-friend mean? Maybe more of a friend? I doubted it, sadly.

"I have another mor-friend in the second row. She's the brown-haired girl. She really wanted to come for some reason." The super hot guy said.

"Care to introduce us?" I asked awkwardly. I was feeling a little left out here.

"Yeah, Wise Girl." The super hot guy teased.

Wise Girl? What was it with these nicknames? I was pretty sure Annabeth was going to kill him, and then we could get off this van fast. These people seemed so powerful and strong, nearly inhuman, almost. Especially the one who was driving, the pale kid, and the super hot guy.

But Annabeth didn't kill the super hot guy. Instead, she rolled her eyes and said, "I'm gonna make you suffer, Percy!"

So Percy was the name of the super hot guy. Oh well. Annabeth hadn't killed this Percy dude yet, but I was sure she would. After all, she had said that she would make Percy suffer.

Right? Right? Right? Right? Right? Right? Right? Right? Right? Right? Right? Right? Right? Right? Right? Right? Right?

RIGHT!?

No.

Percy grabbed Annabeth and yanked her down onto his lap. "This row's for four people so your mor-friend can sit there." He said, his arms around her, choking her.

"GET YOUR HAND OFF HER!" I screamed, trying to pull his arms from her waist. I was surprised at how weak his grip was. Ha! Weakling, trying to hide the fact he actually doesn't have muscles. (because he doesn't NEED to do that with Annabeth. He's just like, resting his hands there. Not GRABBING it)

I clutched Annabeth's arm and started to run, but Annabeth didn't move a muscle.

"What are you doing? C'mon, before this pervert tries to kill you again!" I shouted, but she laughed.

"It's okay. He's not a pervert. As if! But if you're uncomfortable being around these 'gangsters', then you don't have to come with us. It's up to you. I don't mind." She said, before sitting down in his lap. My heart thudded.

I really wanted to get off, but I couldn't appear chicken in front of Annabeth. And I couldn't leave her here!

"I'm gonna stay. I'm brave, you see? I'm brave enough to stay with these people. I'm probably braver than all of you!" I declared defiantly and sitting down, trying to sound braver than I actually felt. I wasn't brave.

The whole van exploded into laughter.

"Braver than Kelp Head... ha!" The punk girl snorted.

"What?" I asked quizically.

"Oh, nothing. Except that you don't really know what Percy here has gone through." Annabeth said.

I looked at Percy again, and now that I really studied him, something about his eyes seemed wild, sinister, dark. There was something in his eyes that seemed broken.

"Um, no offense, but.. you look kind of.. sad," I say, trying to put my fear mildly.

"Yeah, why shouldn't I be? Bob, Silena, Beckendorf, Michael Yew, Lee Fletcher, all lost." He snapped, but then he hung his head. "Because of me."

"Don't say that!" Annabeth reprimanded. "It wasn't your fault and you know it!"

"But if I hadn't been there, then they would have survived." He said miserably.

"If you hadn't been there, our camp would've been destroyed!" She was between yelling and crying.

I know it's selfish, but I found myself wanting them to yell even more. Maybe then Annabeth and I could get off.

Maybe then Annabeth would kiss me...

But that's not how it went.

"Thanks, Wise Girl. It's just- something changed when we were wading through hell, Annabeth. When we met Misery. When I nearly killed her. Thanks for stopping me. Don't know what I'd do without you." They hugged, and I was left staring, I didn't know what they're talking about.

"Hell? Misery?" I asked.

"Figuratively." They said in sync, and the Native American called out, "You sound like the Stolls now!" The van exploded in laughter once more. Great. More friends I didn't know.

"But really. Annabeth's the one keeping me sane. We're both broken, I think. Broken and only when we're together are we whole." Percy said, and the van became quiet. Percy scratched his head and muttered, "Wow, I really made things awkward, didn't I?"

Annabeth smiled. "No, they're all just shocked you said something intelligent for once."

There was nervous laughter, and the buff guy with the baby face whispered to me, "They both have PTSD"

(AHHH DON'T KILL ME BUT I HAD TOOOOO)

I heard Percy say, "Hey, it's not my fault you're smarter than me!"

"It sort of is. You should have been smarter."

I blinked. I was smart. It was a clue she liked me! Yes!

But then my hopes were dashed as Percy grinned goofily. "But you still love me."

"Of course I do." Then they snuggled in even tighter.

Well, my life has changed. A lot. Looks like Annabeth does have friends outside of school. And one of them is a super hot guy. But I'm pretty sure I can break them up. They fought just now. They're probably trying to convince themselves they loved each other.

Yes, and these were gangsters. They'd all break up soon. And I'd be there with a shoulder for Annabeth to cry on.

And I'd just be helping the inevitable: breaking up Percy and Annabeth's friendship.

Because, after all, no matter how hot he is, Annabeth has to like me. I've tried so hard, and I'm still her best friend.

He's Just A Super Hot Guy.
